I remember watching Brett Goldstein talking about how he WROTE the bit with Jamie, where Jamie has to say he's an "ugly, ugly boy," and him thinking that it was going to take forever to film because there was no WAY they'd be able to do it without cracking up, and I absolutely loved that factoid. What a cast. Rainbow was my favorite ep of the entire second season JUST because of Hannah Wadingham's psyching herself up by being, what, a dinosaur? In the mirror, which is fucking HILARIOUS but then topped IMMEDIATELY by the joyously glorious Juno Temple's, "Fuck, you're amazing. Let's invade France." I mean, there are so many other great moments (the colors matching up with the song Rainbow, "You had me at coach," something mustachioed would turn up to make Roy angry, Issac and Ted getting scared by Roy) but "Let's invade France," is such a great shorthand for wanting to take on the world.

Important note about Nate: every single time he's attempted to have a bit of power or assertiveness, it's expressed itself as nastiness or anger. It's literally his FIRST instinct. Think back to when he immediately called Rebecca a shrew before she promoted him. Nate's the quintessential bullied kid who never dealt with his own damage before gaining power and it's never a good combo.

Shocking thing is that we all stopped, knowing exactly what he was referring to. And I still remember the word to this day: "Meteor!" Soccer fan checking in. "The Dark Arts" refers to tactics that are 'kind of' cheating, but the referee sometimes doesn't call. Team has one of their players gets taken down? "OW! MY LEG!!" They tried to BREAK MY LEG!!" while flopping around on the ground trying to to get a foul called. Change of possession for a team in the lead late in the game? Yeah, I'll try to take a minute to put the ball back into play, instead of the 15-20sec it should take. You're both right..you don't have to know *anything* about soccer to enjoy the show. But there are so many "Easter Eggs" for those of us who love the game that it adds another layer of joy over the top of it.

I understand people who didn't want a Ted/Rebecca ship, because having two very close platonic male/female friends on screen is very refreshing. People keep telling it's only a TV show and they designed a scenario only so Nate could try to get it. But that doesn't even seem real. We never see anyone at the table, and yet you can't make reservations for it. Is it ONLY for the people who confidently ask for it? It just doesn't make sense.

Gonna try something ... Emmys: Very cool for everyone involved! However, it's genuinely baffling and frustrating that Phil once again was passed over. Not just for the Emmys, either; he hasn't been nominated for _any_ awards. He absolutely crushed it this season (his work in episode 8 is particularly spectacular), yet he's gotten no recognition. I don't understand it. Episode 5: Love the Isaac scene and all the romcom references! The musical cue of "See her dressed in blue" showing Julie dressed in blue is _adorable_; them being married in real life is the cherry on top. Nate feeling that in order to gain confidence he has to figuratively spit on himself is so sad. Says a lot about how he views himself, and given how we see his father treats him with no affection or appreciation makes it no mystery as to why. Episode 6: I presume you mention it in the full version (or in this one and I missed it), but Phil made that kick for real! On the first try, too. Brendan Hunt put up the unedited version, which you should check out if you haven't already. The scene in the hallway and the locker room are hilarious, though I will say that this episode is one of the reasons I'm so lukewarm on Roy. Him being so petty and childish as to refuse to coach or even listen to Jamie, despite the fact that doing so prevents Jamie - and therefore the team as a whole - from improving is not a good look. Yes it's for comedic effect, but it's annoying. Hot take: Jamie is the more mature one the entire season, especially when taking into account that Roy is 15 years older. And that reveal that Sam is the one Rebecca has been Bantr-ing with ... OY. That completely floored me when I first watched this episode. Much like many, many other things in this show, the seeds were planted long before, but it never even occurred to me. While I'm not super fond of the development due to the age gap and power imbalance, it does the job of being shocking!
@theshamelist2 жыл бұрын
@@laurelf.2057 It is CRIMINAL that Phil Dunster hasn't been nominated for anything. Like, it genuinely upsets me, and I will die on this hill. I actually didn't know that he made that kick for real, so thank you for sharing! And yes, the Roy-Jamie dynamic really shows that Roy can be immature, and as annoying as it can be, it's a humanizing character flaw, and I do appreciate that they at least didn't make him too perfect. And it's a great way to show that Jamie has grown and can in fact be the mature one. An interesting flip of the script. As far as Sam and Rebecca, I agree that it was such a great twist moment! I have so much to say about those two when we get further along with them. As always, thank you for sharing! I love reading your insights. ❤Jacqui
