Wonderfully presented and well researched. George helped us understand what Arnhem was like for the 10th Parachute Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment in a scholarly and sentimental way. He has honored those soldiers brilliantly. I hope all the best for his future project and look forward to its completion. Had George and I been contemporaries when I was his age, I'm sure we would have been good friends as we discussed history. I'm glad to see that not all of his generation have discarded what happened in the past.

George has a passion for history I wish everyone had. I worry that we no longer remember the cost of war - the hundreds of thousands who died. That we have not found the answers to peace; how to prevent war. I hope people like George can solve these dilemmas. Looking forward to where you go next George.

One could assume George has a passion for the subject by the fact that he's spent so much time researching it. Then as he was telling the VC story and his voice caught with emotion, well that confirmed it. Excellent talk.

A friend of mine (Canadian) showed me a Bren gun brought back from the war. (Don't ask me how it got back, it shocked me) and he told the story that his father said they had actually jammed the thing and left it to shoot randomly to keep an area clear for moving actions. Crazy! What a piece of equipment. Wonderful guest, love the young blood moving in to this area of history. Interesting, too! Love to hear about Sussex, Mum was a War Bride from Brighton. :)

My relative Lieutenant William Burgess was in the 10th and was killed on the 21st September 1944 in and around the Schonoord crossroads. His best mate and drinking buddy was Captain Queripal. I visit his grave 3 times a year and we have a 10th Battalion Memorial Service at the Marker around 2pm after the Remembrance Service at Oosterbeek War Cemetery each year.
