I think Callisto protocol really shot itself in the foot with a lack of variety. I think what helps the rule of cool is if the player is wowed by something new. In dead space, the Necromorphs came in different forms and body types, requiring the player to think on their feet and change tactics to kill them. The different environments also worked as big puzzles players needed to solve. Alien Isolation was so good about new environments and added new challenges and shake-ups in the story that it gets away with having a small variety of enemies (with one that can't be killed and follows you throughout the game). Callisto only have a basic environment to explore, with nothing to change how the player thinks or feels, it feels like all the cool stuff in the game was used up in the beginning, and you've already seen 90% of what this game has to offer.

I feel like outer wilds often taps into the rule of cool, the entire game has this sense of spectacle despite it's nonlinear story and open ended approach to game design. One of the few games I've played where just standing still and looking up at the sky gives you this sense of awe.

rule of cool fundamentaly breaks our immersion, however, if it is cool enough/done well enough we are willing to forgive it

Infinite and Callisto both lack variety but show signs of greater potential. As you said for Callisto, they clearly tried. I'm very sad that games and other media that dont hit the landing the first time are instantly pummeled; the disappointment from Callisto made me want to see it done the next time rather than never see a game like it again, same for Infinite. Thanks for this video, you've earned a sub today and more will certainly follow!

I think that another game wother mentioning on the topic of 'rule of cool' could be the monster hunter franchise. It's got the making of a game that's constantly cool, you're doing over the top anime moves to fight giant monsters(many of which have their own over the top anime moves). Even getting smacked around feels kinda cool, that is until you get smacked around too much and your character stands up and spends the next millennium standing around dizzy. If you get hit too many times in MH you get stunned, which completely breaks the flow of the fight and can lead to many deaths that just feel cheap. But if you get stun resistance then you can keep the rule of cool going for the full hunt, even if you suck at dodging.

I adore Halo Infinite's campaign for being an earnest attempt from a completely different studio to actually capture the artistic essence of Halo. Even if they didn't manage to always get it right, it's the first 343i outing that feels like it's trying to iterate upon the series rather than supplant it with "cool" new ideas. The Halo 4 campaign may be superior in a purely narrative sense, but infinite feels as if it has cleansed itself of the barely disguised contempt early 343 had for the bungie Halo's and just honestly embraces the series for what it is. Even the multiplayer has finally started to shape up in recent months from cash grab to genuinely fleshed out experience. I hope they continue to improve in this way as I was pretty sure infinite was the death rattle of the franchise until just recently.

I'll be honest. I didn't realize that was their first outing. Really cool!

Callisto Protocol appears to me as an experiment. They tried out a new approach to Dead Space's style of survival Horror and not everything came out perfect.... sometimes maybe not even decent. This is something that maybe the next installment could fix. IMprove on all the good ideas that didn't hit home as expected and find alternatives for the bad ideas. It worked for Witcher, why shouldn't it work for this

We do get a Warthog run in Halo Infinite! Sorta. I always saw the Gbraakon escape as a homage to that, and even though it's lacking the obvious warthog, it felt just the same in vibe and epicness (if that's a word).

7:18 i blame this partially on the dev mess this game went through, partially on the live service aspect, and partially on all the dorky ass sweaty MP Halo fans that some how think the weapon sandbox getting as big as it had meant there were less unique guns since certain weapons would serve similar functions. or wanted weapons like the spartan laser out of the game cause it was too powerful and easy to use. and do now infinites stuck with a sandbox that feels overly stripped back with the only focus being whether or not the guns are competitively viable

i think halo is different. i want to be master chief, not the other way around. same with doom. besides the characters should at this point be too legendary for any regular halo fan to immerse themselves as the protag.
@buffatwo Жыл бұрын
I enjoy both Bungie and 343’s portrayals of chief for different reasons, especially when you realize Chief is 49 years old biologically. When you’ve seen the stuff he has, it’ll begin weighing on you at some point. If they ever decide to retire chief as a character, I’d like to see them follow red team from halo wars. They are still Spartan 2’s, but much younger since they’ve been in cryosleep so long on the spirit of fire
@gpheonix1 Жыл бұрын
@@buffatwo he's also 49 something that was genetically and physiologically enhanced plus updated by both our science and forerunners(literally). just saying don't really know why people are bring that up. I really think chief, due to everything done to his body, is barely into his prime. just a tangent especially when people start chief dying or whatever.
@forestrees2000 Жыл бұрын
@@gpheonix1 I DONT think he was talking about chiefs physical state at 49, I think he was more talking about all the stuff chief has seen at this point; enough to weigh on anyone and wreak havoc on their mental state

@@buffatwo I mean, we already had Noble team AND the ODST, which were both pretty well depicted. So I'm already fine with playing someone other than chief. I'd also love for a maybe more open ended space opera style game in the Halo universe but from the perspective of the Covenant. Play as an Elite on Covenant worlds and meet all the other alien races and recruit them into your squad or complete quests for them and stuff

There both boring uninspired games . Frankenstein monsters of games that came before them. There is evolution in games e.g combat evolved and then there's riding of the coat tales of something else e.g fall order being a horrible mash of dark souls and jedi academy. Like just remaster academy or make a 2nd one
