@@chrisbegetis3414 THE NFL kinda has this. On the free kick following a safety, the kicking team can so an inside kick and since a free kick is always done as a punt, you can do an onside punt.
@kikastra2 жыл бұрын
@@CONSOLETRUTH2 A free kick isn't always a punt, it's usually a place kick due to the fact that in the rare times a free kick is called, is when a team is within field goal range, and almost always at the end of a half. But it would be interesting to see a team do some unexpected trickery with an onside punt from a free kick, but I doubt that will ever happen, as there doesn't seem to be that many scenarios, if any at all, where that would be advantageous, vs the risks.

Great explanation of the basics. Canadian Rules football is the way you'd expect a nation of hockey lovers to play the game. Unlimited motion; lots of action; few timeouts; making it up on the fly! I'm often shocked by Canadian fans who don't even realize how unique our game is and why the rules Make the Difference. Thanks again for this video.

During the CFL's struggling era of the early '90's, several American based teams temporarily joined, helping the league stay afloat. Specifically, Baltimore still has a strong, cult following. That really says something considering both the Colts & Ravens storied Championships! The bigger field and 3 down game lend itself to a more wide open game, where special teams can sometimes be more significant than either the offensive or defensive teams. Both the passing & kicking games are a big part of the game. Typically, the majority of the games are decided in the final minutes...buckle up, there'll be some turbulence!!

As an American, IMO the Canadian form of gridiron football is underrated. I found out recently that they have an onside punt. If a player is behind (maybe even) with the punter when the ball is punted, the ball is live for that player. Then I remember a tied game and a team was kicking a field goal with seconds left in the game. The kicker missed going into the endzone. The player who caught the ball immediately punted it out to avoid giving up a single giving the other team the win. But the player on the field goal kicking team punted it back. Then the ball was loose and the kicking team recovered and won. So, in one play, there was one kick and two punts.
@NinhLyUK4 жыл бұрын
That would be the Argonauts vs Alouettes game. Toronto lost badly on that play. And I agree - Canadian Football is great.
@quietcorner2934 жыл бұрын
@@NinhLyUK That sounds right. I couldn't remember the teams and was too lazy to look it up. There was another right before half time. With seconds left, a team was kicking off right after scoring and decided to kick it short. A player on the receiving team immediately punted it into the kicking teams endzone scoring a point.

As a rugby league fan in Australia, I've always found myself relating to Canadian football more than the American version. It's mainly due to the lower financial level that leads to things like sponsorship logos on the jerseys and field, the half empty stadiums, the much lower salaries etc. that make it feel like the football I'm used to here with the NRL. That's also why I happen to like the Arena Football League, you follow that at all? The interest for it might not be there, but that might make an interesting comparison video with regular American football...

ThatBrendonGuy That's cool. I understand where you're coming from. At that level - the players are still humble and the money hasn't gotten to their heads yet. American here now living in Europe, but I've always preferred CFL. You have only 3 downs to get your 10 yards so it's more wide open. You have 12 players so it's more wide open. You let more motion before the snap so it's more wide open. It's longer and wider so it's more wide open. The end zones are deeper and you have to do things with the ball or you get points scored on you or you score points, so it's more wide open. But the biggest reason I like CFL is that it's ...rats, it was on the tip of my tongue. I'll try to think of why I prefer it.

Mrchips469 their basically the same, 2 penalties are diffrent is the first is No yards in CFL, on a punt, a player must be 5 yards away from the guy catching the ball, reason is you can’t call fair catch and a player can get rammed without even having a chance to catch the ball properly, this is a 15 yard penalty and it’s added to the end of the run. The other difference is you can’t kick the ball out of bounds. It has to bounce into the field first. That is a 5 yards penalty, the rest is the same

Great video. Typically a defense will have a position called a Free Safety on the field which is another defensive back, who typically defends against the pass. The number is defensive linesmen and linebackers will usually total 7 ... sometimes 4 defensive linemen and 3 linebackers .. and sometimes 3 defensive linemen and 4 linebackers, depending on the strategy used by the defense. Since there are 12 players on the field at one time in Canadian football, this leaves 5 players to defend against the pass, made up of 2 cornerbacks, 2 defensive halfbacks and one free safety. The Canadian games is similar to American football, with some distinct rule differences and is very exciting to watch.

TheBenjaminks I do like both but I prefer CFL because they have QB’s have protection. I agree they should get a bit more protection but it’s ridiculous how much they have in NFL, if a QB runs and sees he’s about to get tackled, he can slide and if he slightly gets touched, he gets an additional 15 yards to that run, that’s so stupid, if QB decides to run, he should have same protection as any other player on the field, at this point if they keep adding rules you won’t even be allowed to tackle the QB, NFL in my opinion is becoming like flag football. Also in NFL, kicks are rarely returned, what’s the point of kicks then if they won’t be returned, especially kick offs, both teams are basically ok with starting at the 25 yard line, just start there then instead of waisting time🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️. I also find NFL overtime dumb, both teams should get a chance with the ball regardless of what the first team does

Fantastic tutorial of Canadian football. Alas, I will never understand the rouge. It’s like laying up in golf. No rewards for taking the easy way out. It’s just the way it should be. And although he currently walks amongst the angels, I’d wager that Saint Robert of Probert would agree with my sentiments.

Excellent video to explain the Rules of Canadian Football. Time for an update. The convert or point after is placed on the 32 yard line instead of the 12. If the kick is good it counts for one point. A team can also try for a two point concersion. The ball remains placed on the 2 yard line. I would also add a couple of other nuisances, the punt team is required to give the punt returner 5 yds or it is a penalty (called a no yards penalty), the penalty is either 5 yds for unintentional no yards, or 15 yards for intentional. The Defence must be a yard "off the ball" at the beginning of each play. On Offense there is unlimited motion allowed before the snap of the ball in ANY direction.

To me, Canadian players are just as talented as the Ameriican players in the NFL. Canadian football's more fun to watch & is more exciting than American football, IMHO. :-)

The play shown at 3:50 is a rouge/single and not a safety. Also there are some ties in the CFL regular season, they just don't happen that often.

Ninh Ly might wanna add the wild endings like. 1. Any player can kick the ball, it's called a quick kick. Its rare but possible. Unsarally a team on the other side of the field that needs a winning TD has a go. 2. No Yards not Fair Catch. 3. If the game winning fg is missed, it's still a live ball and can be kicked out of the endzone unsarally out of bounds of so, then kicked back into the endzone and can be legal recovered for a TD or Rouge. Point is the ball is always live compaired to US rules.
@NinhLyUK9 жыл бұрын
Mathew Clemence I'm guessing you watched the wild ending of the Montreal Allouettes & Toronto Argonauts game (which was a complete farce)? Can't add anything to any video unfortunately. Once it's up, it's up and cannot be edited. Having said that, apart from the 'no yards rule' I wouldn't even put the other two in because like I've said to countless KZbin viewers - it's a basic video for complete beginners. I don't want to confuse rookies with complex rules that barely happen. Thanks anyway.

Excellent work! Though I only found one error and it's simply a positioning error on Defense. There are only 3 Linebackers, not 4. Defensive Halfbacks are different from Safetys, as Defensive Halfbacks do cover Slotbacks, while the Safety is an independent cover-man, who is meant to be the last line of coverage, and help is fellow DB's when needed, or be used in a "Safety Blitz". I just felt the need to point that out.

I don't think QB is most important position the Offensive line positions are most important because without them the Quarterback couldn't get the ball off in time.
@DezmaizeSoulist7 жыл бұрын
Apple Dash but the quarter back scores the points controls the momentum of the game and is the way you win(usually
@jakethunderbird87357 жыл бұрын
Dezmaize Soulist they both are equally important. There's no real position that's better than the other. Like if there are no lineman, quarterback would be killed but no qb, there would no plays made
@iammrksmom78967 жыл бұрын
The centre is the most important position homie. A game winning play cant start without a game winning snap.

Great explanation for someone who hadn't heard the rules of canadian league football dude! I would have said something about the stopping and starting of the clock/plays, this seems to confuse those with a rugby background who watch American/canadian football. Also, with the single point/rouge, I would have emphasized it has everything to with the opposing end zone, it became a tad confusing...but overall great video and thank you!
@NinhLyUK9 жыл бұрын
Hey rmikC Thanks for the kind comments. Yeah, I tried to keep it simple and not mention clock stoppages and penalties, so that a complete beginner can grasp the game. They do have ties but they are rare. Overtime is played similar to NCAA rules, each team gets 1 possession except they start at the 35 yard line, (College is 25) and you must go for 2 after a Touchdown. If no winner after 2 overtimes, the game is a tie In Canadian football, you can also recover fumbles (and onside kicks) by knocking the ball out of bounds. It goes to whoever touched it last, Where as in American football, balls that go out of bounds go to the offense. Onside kicks work the same way.
@ivandiablo82828 жыл бұрын
cdl rules say "last team to touch the ball retains posession" nfl rules say; "last team to possess the ball gets it" - makes for very interesting kick off

Note that in Canadian football the offense may have all of their backs in motion prior to the ball being snapped (put in play) while in American football only one back may be in motion. In both games the linemen must not be in motion. (That is, remain set.)

Hey Mark. Yes, I did mention the 3 minute warning in my other video: The Differences between American and Canadian Football.
