Another great video guys. A couple of years back, as a beginner surfer just getting on to green waves, I was at Rainbow Bay and I inadvertently upset some locals by getting in their way. I hadn't realised how fast advanced surfers will travel along the wave, so even if you think you are a long way down the line from where they're taking off, it's still their wave. I learned the hard way for sure! It's tough because you don't feel ready to mix it up with the big boys, but at the same time, you need open faced waves to progress your own surfing. It was a good lesson learned though. I'm heading back to the Goldie on Thursday and can't wait! Keep up the great work. Your videos are so informative and insightful.
@HowtoRip5 жыл бұрын
Yeah good point! When progressing to the more challenging waves try and find a beach which is less crowded. Once you get comfortable and more experienced then you can go to the crowded spots. Rainbow is hard work at the best of times!

As a beginner/intermediate, what´s absolutely hardest for me when paddling out at a beach break and trying to get out of they way of a surfer who has caught a wave is judging which direction to paddle in order to best avoid them. I'm improving rapidly at judging this, but if you don't have years of experience in the water, it can be incredibly difficult sometimes to know where you and the other surfer are going to meet.

Same. It stresses me out so much at this point. I hope I'll improve at this soon, too

Thanks for this, I knew Snaking was not okay but I didn't know it had a name. I've been sitting in the prime spot waiting for a wave and I've had locals come back from just catching a wave and sit right in front of me meaning that they have right of way for the next wave! Then they've yelled at me to get off the wave. Very frustrating, I don't care if someone is a local, the beach isn't theirs, they have to wait just like everyone else. I am always giving way to people and it really is a fight sometimes to get to the wave first, and this makes it harder to progress when I'm getting no waves and advanced surfers get continuous waves! Also I surf at a bay with a right hander reform. I've learnt here and realised that as I am goofy I find it easier to pop up faster and pump along the wave going left. Going right seems slower and more round about to get along the wave. A video with tips for a goofy on a right hander would be helpful. Thanks

That's an everywhere thing. Sometimes you just have to go and show them you aren't a punk. If they call you out let them know you'll hold your own or at least try if they want to get physical. Some of the spots I've surfed I've had to burn a few people after sitting for 30 plus minutes. When called out just tell them we can handle it now if you've got a problem or we can surf and have fun.

Re: moving out of the way. I've been on both sides of this situation. The 'rules' say that the surfer has priority, i.e. the paddler has to move. As a surfer, I've seen people stare at me blankly and freeze in place. Honestly, I prefer that. I'm the one with mobility so I can usually get around them easily enough. If we both second guess each other and go off in the same direction... well you can guess what happens. Similarly, as a paddler, I might have less than ten seconds to figure out what the surfer ahead of me is going to do, particularly if they are laying on the cutbacks. I can't really guess if I'll be in their way or not and there's not much time to react. Is there some sort of recommended hand signal / gesture / action to take? I've tried shouting -- "left, right" -- in both cases but that just leaves the other person confused as to whether I mean them or me.
@HowtoRip5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, this is the unfortunate reality of these situations. Of course the surfer shouldn't run over someone, but the paddler should make every effort to move. It is just one of those things, sometimes it goes wrong
@brennanmunoz74114 жыл бұрын
Yeah this happened to me today. I was attempting to paddle back out after I bailed on the wave I caught. I wasn’t even on my board and I froze as I saw the oncoming surfer. I thought he would pass in front of me if i just stayed there but he started yelling at me and came up to me afterwards and told me I need to do a better job of moving. I’ve only been surfing two weeks so I didn’t know what I was supposed to do. Thought standing still and letting them go around would be the best ber
@valeriejohnson27703 жыл бұрын
I gesture and point with my hand to indicate that I will go behind them toward the whitewater. It usually works ok. Also commit to the direction you are paddling to get out of the way, less ambiguity that way.

Agree with them all.. But don't ditch the board it's a pretty relative rule.. yeah sure until 10 ft it's pretty "easy" to duck dive, but where I live, in Leiria, Portugal (where Nazaré is located) we get pretty consistent big swell all winter long, and in 16 and above feet it's pretty hard not to ditch your board when you're caught inside, if you have nobody behind you or surfing a wave it's much safer just to dicth your board in big conditions and swim down in cause you're caught inside. I've had my board ripped of my hands so hard to the point of injurying myself for trying to duck dive bigger waves just to not hurt others surfers. This it's just my point of view of things, sure in normal conditions you've to be able to control your board, but in big swell it's pretty relative once you're caught inside

Anastassiya KIM I’m no expert but I think I can pinpoint a decent swell. I surf on the east coast US and we use Swell info, Surfline, and magic seaweed. You want wave intervals to be as long as possible. For example 4’ waves at 5 seconds suck, but 4’ waves at 10 seconds are fun. And wind direction to be off shore.

Damn I feel old some times. At one time and in some places violating these rules did have consequences, and punishments. I do not and never did think this was right. Lots of breaks are much more crowded now. And a couple spots I surf have surf school operations. Aka "kook factories". I don't know if they do any sort of etequate instruction. From the way many beginners (graduates of these schools) behave I don't think they do. Some basic instructions like in this video would go a long way to making the line up a safer and more fun place for every one. When I get, call it interfered with, I assume the person is ignorant and not malicious. I try to paddle back out and give them some suggestions, in a friendly conversational way. Most are receptive and really didn't know what they'd done was wrong or dangerous. As opposed to being screamed at, threatened, or revenge snaked like happened to me when I was learning and ignorant mistakes.

As a beginner, I've been two two separate surf schools, and never had a single word like these rules. I knew there were some, but had no idea what most of them were..... so just went far away from anyone else, and done all my surfing alone, because I didn't want to be a dick. We need more focus on the right training; not just getting you standing up and off on your own.... though I've had a lot of great advise in parking lots.

Hi, ur videos are super helpful,very detailed and easy to get. I had an experience when i just started to learn surfing, when on the beach break there were paralel line of advanced surfers for bigger waves, and the line for beginners (going for white water, not to deep and more friendly waves). So the girl from advanced line took the wave, i did not see her and when white water reached me i just took it. Then the girl was very frastrated. So i that case who is wrong? My view was as she is more experienced she could just avoid me..
@HowtoRip5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you could have been more aware and moved out of her way Anastassiya. It's your responsibility to move for the surfer who is on the wave, but of course they should avoid you if they can...

If the peak comes out in random parts of the water (basically, it can be left or right coming from any area), how do I figure out the order of the lineup? i'd say rule number 1 is stay out of the way of the person riding the wave. it's not aways possible but it is very important. if you're constantly getting in peoples way you're a danger to yourself and other people. if you don't have good control of yourself and your board then you don't belong anywhere near a competitive lineup.

The un written rules are only good for the good surfers. If you are not as good as another surfer or don't paddle as strong or fast you will never be able to catch a wave. Hence you will always be snaked or in front of the better surfer ruining their line. Surfing is a Narcissistic individual sport and the un written rules were created by the better surfers to catch more waves. It's better to just move away from the better surfers to another area or you will be watching them catch waves all day.

That might seem more fair, but the accepted thing is for paddlers to move out of the way of someone who is up and riding. But if a collision would happen otherwise, absolutely the surfer riding the wave should alter or end their ride to avoid crashing into someone else. Last resort tho.
