Ninh explains the Rules of Takewondo. These are the new 2017 rules as outlined by World Taekwondo. No more Kyong-Go warnings, changes to the scoring - and overall changes to the rules to make the sport more attack minded and less emphasis on using the rules to defend yourself. Hope this helps?

"You cannot lift the leg and put it down without attacking..." What? That's absurd. If someone could please explain the purpose of such a rule, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 4 жыл бұрын
It is absurd! They implemented it so that fighters wouldn't use their leg as a giant block for the opponent to navigate. It got to the point where both fighters were just hopping on one leg trying to just bait each other to attack. So they made it illegal to do so. Personally I think they mangled the rules to the point whereby it's not a sport anymore. But that's just me.

Agree, it’s a great martial art to learn because it’s a building block for many other martial arts. If your kicks and punches are good, then you’ll already be ahead of everyone else in another martial art. I know from experience. I got to 1st Dan in TKD and then went to Krav Maga. Knew most of the material already and it helped a ton, since the kicks were very similar.

@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 5 жыл бұрын
You can punch as hard as you like to the body, but not the face. The reason why they changed the rule on what you call 'flinching' is that too many people were just using it to deliberately keep opponents away and not attacking. Made for some very boring fights. Steven Lopez of the USA was the first to do this, winning gold after gold by playing keep away and then everyone started doing it, hence why they recently outlawed it.

Does the point system encourages the player to put their hands down? I find this absurd bc (coming from kyokushin) I was always taught to keep your hands up (or atleast keep them high enough so that you can block incase). So I found it really weird why their hands are never up. Just asking. To explain: kyokushin point system doesn’t really consider any hits other than to the head (unless its a really effective hit) Also, if I were to just punch the torso (like rapidly) will I get punished? Just curious bc someone told me so.

(For those that don't get it, it's a reference to an Asian-exclusive SNES game called "Taekwon-Do", which uses actual Taekwondo rules {circa 1994}, except for the final battle, where the boss kicks the referee into the scoreboard and it's treated more like a typical fighting game battle.)

Informant didn't mention if all strikes to the face with the hand were illegal or just punches. If one did a palm strike or backhand to the face would that also be illegal?

Can you make an updated version since the rules were just updated Wednesday?
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 6 жыл бұрын
No. The rules seemingly change every 6 months now and it's getting kinda ridiculous that they can't seem to make up their minds. Furthermore, the interpretation of the rules are different between tournaments so it's pretty pointless making any sort of explanation video that won't be woefully out of date within months.

It all depends what you want to get out of it? I've done both Karate (Blue Belt) and Taekwondo (Black Belt). Both disciplines will get you fitter over time. What I will say is that Karate is slightly more even in terms of punches and kicks, whereas Taekwondo is very kick heavy. In terms of real world fighting, there are better disciplines out there.

Ahh. My sport. Although I'm still kinda haunted from the time my opponent seemed like he gave up in the middle of my kick and basically shattered his face (it was a junior tournament where no kicks or heavy punches to the head were allowed...I was aiming for his chest, but he slouched down...). I can still see the blood that...even the memory of the sound makes me cringe.

So basically, taekwondo's "gibon kyorugi' fights are not for the shy person who fights in such matches. Excessive stalling while fighting in TKD matches can be perceived by the ref as not showing a fighting spirit and can lead to the one stalling to get a "gam jeon". Several "gam jeon" red-flags on you earns you a disqualfication, and the non-offending fighter will win by default. So especially in these taekwondo fights, avoid: 1. Backing away too much from the aggressor without counterattacking. 2. Excessive faking without obvious attempts to attack the opponent after faking. 3. Excessively holding back your punches within range of punching reach of the opponent - that is definitely stalling, and it is not allowed.

In short: yes. However, I noticed that World Taekwondo are forever changing the parameters of scoring. As a black belt in this sport, I think they've mangled it beyond recognition.
