@stridingwombat9780 so you could say the same about Palestinians, that have been systematically ethnically cleansed and now being exterminated by a fascist ethno-supremacist apartheid regime illegally occupying and settling on their territories, but instead, the occupier is "allowed" to commit literally everything on this list TIMES 1000, especially in gaza in the last 2 months, and now israeli "soldiers" are just shooting and executing civilians waving white flags (recently woman and children, some newborn babies, sheltering in a school) and they even "accidentally" executed 3 hostages that had makeshift white flags, but i'm sure that there will be some double standard applied.

The thing about the "rules of war" is they only matter when both sides believe in them and follow them. Everything is fair in war as the law has no bearing on the drive to survive and when it comes down to the bottom line people will do ANYTHING to survive.

"Surviving" is one thing, massacring civilians or blowing up medics or journalists has nothing to do with surviving, and there is a human consensus about morality, even in times of war, any nation who believes they are exempt are criminal and terrorist states.
@natsune09

That isn't true. It does matter, even when only one side follows the rules. Look at Iraq and Afghanistan. We (I'm a veteran) were there and as my regimental commander put it (H.R. McMaster), we are fighting over a commodity, and the commodity is people. We get them on our side by treating them with respect. They try to get them by using fear. Along with that, is the international community is watching us. If we obey the rules, and they don't, other nations are more willing to help us. If we break the rules, the international community will not help us. You can't argue about being on the morale high ground while at the same time breaking the rules of war.

There was a moment when a higher up used his rank to give orders to the medics. Bluntly put, remove themselves from their station and move to the front. It's said that a medic do have ranks, but are removed out of chain of command when doing their job. They have high stopping power as they generally create a larger wound with their higher surface area. You're more likely to get a hollow point lodged inside you or have it move around internally before exiting. Pointed rounds are far more likely to penetrate in a roughly straight trajectory. So if your goal was maximum damage, it would make sense.

medics - A medic carrying out or seen to be carrying out offensive actions was considered a viable target. this means a medic seen in an assault, firing their weapon, could be targeted and shot. This is something that got the US in trouble a few times, as some medics would run up "firing" on an enemy position while trying to reach a downed soldier. ambulances, medical ships, and hosptials may NOT be used for offensive operations, may not stockpile arms, and may not be used for the transfer of active weapons or personal. - UK pulled this bs in both ww1 and ww2. they didn't like that a medical ship would carry wounded back to england, then head back to europe empty... so they decided, lets just load it with meds and soldiers and send it back full. This stripped not just that ship but any ship of that nation of protections as any could be carrying supplies and combat personal on offensive operations. This issue came up with red cross, as without telling the red cross, one country smuggled spy devises in via red cross packages, including a radio hidden inside a cross. This pissed the red cross off because it removed the neutrality of their entire agency.

27:10 this rule goes if i've got it right, One may not use exploding bullet or another direct fire explosive against human being directly. how ever hand grenade like many other grenades does not fill this direct fire category. explosive large caliber ammunition against vehicles is allowed such as anti-aircraft and anti-armour (or anti-tank)
@adzi6164
@adzi6164 4 ай бұрын
It's the matter of application. An "exploding bullet", or, more commonly, expanding one, requires hitting the target enemy in the same way as with a normal bullet, so it doesn't provide an advantage for hitting the target. If a soldier is hit, and their armor is pierced, they are most probably down and out of combat, even without the use of banned ammo types - so it doesn't give any benefit of eliminating a threat over normal ammo, either. Now, grenades and cannons have the advantages of ability to be applied where firearms can't reach the targets, as well as the ability to hit multiple targets. They are a completely different category than firearm ammo. Geneva Convention isn't about fighting fair. If you mortar enemy squad to oblivion, you are smart. If you shoot them with hollow-point ammo, you are needlessly cruel. (and you are, frankly, putting yourself at disadvantage, as hollow-point ammo has bigger trouble piercing through cover and armor)

That's the point, you pretty much force the enemy to either commit to finding and disarming the mines, which wastes valuable time, giving your end breathing room to plan a defence or counter offensive OR if they simply use the designated path, you herd them where you expect them to be and can ambush or be ready for an assault from that front. It's a win-win regardless.

People in the comments (and common people) need to understand that questioning and undermining the importance of the Geneva conventions and the HL doesn't help anywhere. Yes sure most of the times the law doesnt get respected and there arent proportional repercussions but the amount of lives that have been saved and helped by the ICRC is immense. There are actual people out there on the conflict zones that risk their lives so they can help both combatants and non-combatants, yeah the media won't show it because a hospital getting bombed on a front page sells more than 1000 people getting food and water on a daily basis so that they can keep on living. What about the times when IHL actually worked? What about the guns that have been banned (dum dum bullets, tear gas, mines carefully demarcated etc.) ? It's so easy to question something that doesnt properly work inside your peaceful little neighborhood, but a step to the right direction demands reinforcement and expansion of the humanitarian law, because it CAN work and we have seen it many times. PS. Keep in mind that it's a fairly new law that started on the Battle of Solferino, only on 1864. Urban law still doesn't work well enough and it is centuries old.

A lot of it just gets ignored anyway... like, there're no repercussions. Whether it's the Russians targeting civilian populated areas in Ukraine, Hamas taking civilian hostages or Israel shelling civilians... Also, torture is counter-productive, even if it wasn't immoral. You're FAR more likely to get actionable intel from a POW you treat with respect than you are a POW you torture to gather information - not to mention the fact that if you have a reputation for treating prisoners well your enemy is more likely to surrender than they are if they think they'll be tortured if they're captured. Especially if they're in a conscripted force, or were put onto the battlefield against their will in the first place. Like... imagine you're forced into combat, and you know that if you surrender you'll be taken somewhere safe, fed well and treated respectfully, vs if you surrender you know you'll spend months - possibly years - of your life being tortured and broken... in which instance would you surrender, and which instance would you fight to the death?
