Interesting to hear about a 2-year update cycle for Altra. Could be a positive thing if that means they put more into each update, but could easily be more of a cost-cutting effort than anything else. As a card-carrying Altra cult member, I'm as satisfied with their current lineup as ever tbh. I use the Vanish Tempo and Escalante for the road and the Olympus for the trail. I'd like to see the Ego Pro midsole make its way into a trail shoe but that's probably my only request right now.

Thanks for the insight! I'm a Vivobarefoot and Altra wearer and would be quite happy with 2 year update cycles, for sustainability purposes and to curb consumerism a bit - once a company gets the shoe right of course. I'm not quite sure Altra did that in 2022 but as long as they keep the Escalante Racer I'll be happy.

Altra has mentioned sustainability as one of the reasons for the switch. but I'm not sure I believe that. a person who is loving their altra isn't going to be able to make it longer than a year on a single pair anyway. I suppose I should have asked a follow up question to really dig in a bit further.

@@kofuzi that's true but there must be a lot of waste involved in developing a new shoe every year so it could still be a more sustainable option even if the shoe still needs replacing annually. TBH I'm skeptical of most sustainability claims anyway. It's probably economically motivated.

I have to say I am REALLY curious about Salomon's new road lineup. I feel like they've been getting closer and closer to getting it right. That being said, not sold on using Energy Foam for the Sense Ride 5. The firm, responsive ride was part of the appeal and differentiating factor of that model for me.

What a bummer with the Adidas Embargo… I’ve actually become a huge Adidas fanboy lately. Startet with the Pro 2 and Prime X, and now absolutely LOVE the Pro 3 and Strung. I just bought the Takumi as a speed shoe and the Boston 11 as a daily trainer and am wondering if it’s worth sending the Boston back (haven’t run them yet) and waiting for version 12.

I'm going to take a stab and say adidas are updating the Ultraboost 23 to a new design that will hugely update the midsole foam to a material called Light Boost. Already quite a few photos online of the shoe. But big question is...what is LightBoost? I have a few guesses... Nitrogen infused TPU. Pebax based material (with or without Nitrogen infusion) Revised Lightstrike Pro formula... Guess we find out soon enough...

there are some differences in what runners tend to prefer, and a lot of this is cultural/regional. what we like in America can sometimes be very different from what runners like in Europe. The Ultra Glide is designed for American trails. And I'm an admittedly novice trail runner, but I struggle to find trails where I want what the Sense Ride offers.

I never really understood the point in some companies having shoes at TRE, but not allowing reviewers and KZbinrs to talk about them. If a shoe isn't set to release until fall or winter of 23', why not wait until then to show it to people. I understand a lot of shoes have embargos, but it just doesn't make sense to me to have those shoes there. Super excited for Saucony next year though, saw some of the models set to release next year and they look promising

I think all shoe companies need to be on two year cycle. They are going to get to the point where they run out of ideas and you won’t be able to tell the difference in the changes made. At least not enough to buy.

I think it's a peculiar position to assert that too-frequent updates will cause brands to "run out of ideas," as if creativity and innovation are somehow zero sum or finite. could some shoes that don't want to change be on a longer cycle? sure, like the Ghost. But I will restate that it concerns me when a decision is made across an entire brand.

@@kofuzi. You have to say that because it will hurt what you do. It’s going to be like video games (madden). Change one thing and call it a new game but it’s pretty much the same thing. It’s like when they only change something with the upper and call it a new shoe. I could care less about an upper change unless the prior version was just terrible. Just hold off on the upper change and release it the same time you improve the ride under foot. That’s what everyone cares about, the ride.
