You said he was on his way to becoming a huge action star in 1987. I would say he was already a huge star by then. Conan the Barbarian/Destroyer, Terminator, Red Sonja , Commando, Raw Deal.
@adamropp47578 жыл бұрын
***** Conan the Barbarian was #1 at the box office for 3 weeks, quadrupled it's money in 4 months and made more revenue than the Terminator. Commando was also #1 for 3 weeks and Tripled it's money over the summer. Raw Deal was #2 doubling it's money, Destroyer also made money and was #4. Any actor who does this in 5 years, plus adding in the #1 hit Terminator is already a star. (Barbarian is actually very memorable and considered a classic, however their classical status NOW is irrelevant to the fact that when they were RELEASED they were hits.)

Arnold was my favorite actor growing up-- being born in 1980. Even tho I really wasn't old enough at the time, I was able to see all of his movies a year or two after their release with the help of H.B.O. and my father's handy VCR. He had an arsenal of recorded movies, and late at night on the weekends my friends and I would watch all the ones we weren't supposed to. We were able to see all the super violent and profane 80's flicks we could handle. Sometimes getting to sleep afterwards was a challenge, but that was all part of the enjoyment! Every year or so Arnie would put out a new movie, and we would have new one-liners and action dialogue to memorize for future aggressive games we would play. Anyways... it's great to look back at in the context of the era and politics that were happening at the time; as kids we had no idea, we were just loving the explosions and uber-violence. Thanks for the reviews!

In that flick, I was trying to analyze the so-called "prisoner restraint collar", which I call PRC, used in the Wilshire Detention Center scene. It is an extremely scary collar when you see what happened when Chico tried to escape in the breakout-revolt by the prisoners....his head gets blown off by a detonation inside the collar, instantaneously killing him, on the voice-over "Sonic deadline's up, prisoner restraint collars armed, sonic deadline's up, prisoner restraint collars armed..." and character Weiss de-arms the collars by finally breaching the secure computer interface on the command "Perimeter deactivated...." That 2-word phrase de-arms the collars for good and the breakout was complete, but the collars can still go off if they try to take them off. So they had to find somebody to safely take those collars off after the breakout was over. I am guessing that since the PRC was paramilitary, and I am thinking about military meaning they use explosives - most likely the explosive used on those collars was something like C4. As the movie goes on, one of the prison escapees, who still has the PRC on, is helped by a underground de-armer of those PRCs. I am guessing there is a booby-trap circuitry that explodes the collar if the collar is tampered with, so the de-armer had to do a temporary electrical circumvent that allows for something like a 30-second added delay in the fuse that won't blow the collar immediately. But as the collar is detached, there is a back-up arming system that re-arms the collar and still will detonate the collar in 15 seconds, so as the collar is removed, the de-armer puts the collar into the garbage chute on "Good-bye, my lovelies"--the de-armer had to put the armed collar away safely and fast before it exploded, and putting it into the garbage can and closing it contained the detonation. Controlled det - and it worked! This was the scariest part of what "The Running Man" is all about.

Well, the released cut of Robocop contained "less graphic" depictions of violence and mayhem than in the unaltered unrated directors cut, ^& PLUS, the violence in Robocop, for the most part [sans Murphy' brutal\depressing execution in the 1st act] was mostly played for laughs, akin to something like Kick-Ass wheras Running Man' felt more dire & "sadistic" it being set in a virtual gladiator, mad max-ian arcade arena, thus why this makes some sense as to why, in my book. The thing about Ebert is that he dislikes films for solid, explicable reasons: the plot is thin, the characters are cardboard, there are clumsy devices, the story is simplistic and dull. It's all SFX and no heart. Siskel is just a hugely reactive milquetoast. Ewww, I thought it was horrid, I didn't like it because it was scary and there was blood. It was nasty. Yucky. I can't take my granny to see this. Unnecessary. Inappropriate. Why can't movies be nice? This is why Ebert is remembered as a great critic and Siskel is not.
@jayazathoth85308 жыл бұрын
I disagree, Ebert could take films more on their own merits without comparing them to other films, while Siskel seemed to do that more often. Siskel also looked harder for good characterization, while Ebert seemed to think good dialogue was usually sufficient for that. I recall that Siskel liked Die Hard for its characters, while Ebert didn't
@steerpike668 жыл бұрын
Not true. A good script is a good script. Good writing is a form of engineering. Structurally, you can take it apart and look at how it works. So is photographic composition. A good shot, with frame and balance and tone and depth of field, is definable. Ugly photography is ugly for set, demonstrable reasons. Continuity is also something that can be demonstrated. A script can contradict itself or be fundamentally illogical. Bad acting is a craft done poorly. That's why you can take a person who cannot act and teach them to act. All these things are identifiable. As someone who writes, shoots, acts and teaches, I know that these things are solid, teachable processes. There is no 'he can't play the guitar but I think he can so he can'. He can't play: his music sucks. This is different from 'He can play; I don't care for his music.' Whats truly subjective is effect. Funny or scary is subjective. But a film is a thing that can be well made or poorly made.

Okay: an example. 'The Shining' opened to to terrible reviews in 1981. Critics hated it. It is undoubtedly a beautifully made film. The photography is immaculate. The talented actors did each take 100 times until they got what Kubrick wanted. The music is excellent. The story is a best-seller from the 20th century's most popular writer. (who also wrote 'The Running Man') The tone and pacing are (to my mind) fantastic, and most people agree that it is very frightening. it is now considered a cinematic classic and frequently appears in the Number 1 spot on lists of horror films. So why was it hated on release? And considered a failure? TASTE. People expected one thing and got something else. But no matter how many people didn't find it to their taste, no argument can be made that 'The Shining' is a bad, incompetent or poorly made film.

+Chazbot I think you explained your points very succinctly, and I agree with your assessment of an objectively good film. However, I think you're being too generous with your assessment of Ebert. More often than not, I found him to be a bloviating, pompous gasbag who a lot of times would spout off his own opinion about something even if the logic wasn't always there (i.e. his diatribe about the boy in ROBOCOP II. Even I "got" the point of the boy's character, and I'm not a film critic). My favorite was when he was reviewing LSOH back in 1986 and gushed about the inclusion of the three urchin characters "who weren't in the stage play." I almost fell out of my chair when I heard that one. Fact-checking, anyone? I admit, I've always been more partial to Siskel. I don't always agree with his reviews (basically any time he reviews a family film, he oversimplifies and whines about "ooh, somebody think of the children!"). However, he didn't seem to try as hard at being an objective critic like Ebert, which consequently made him seem more honest and refreshing.

Amelia Doubleyou Solid points, though the standout "poor" review of Ebert's for me was the Secret of the Ooze. Solid two star movie, and he was right to say that the original was probably the best Turtle film that could be made. This doesn't mean he is totally wrong about Ooze, but the review is poorly written, what with talking about their origins in a Nintendo game (!) and the teachers tracing anti-social and violent behavior to the Turtles. There are plenty of poor points in the actual movie to critique and yet...

I have never read the book, but some elements of Running Man remind me of a German TV movie made in 1970, "Das Millionenspiel". The host in that movie also was an actual show host at the time (Dieter Thomas Heck). Das Millionenspiel is more focused on character motivation and to some extent social criticism, without any real good action.

Out of all the 80's films set in the future, bizarrely this is the most accurate. Holy crap they predicted a lot of shit correctly, maybe that's why it's aged so well.
