8 was an Englishman whose dad was a contractor from the uk working jn Berlin and dresden building the cities back to where they where after ww2 today I live in the uk and with lockdowns I feel like I'm living in Berlin and dresden right now I was only there because my dad and my mum where invited out never been such a bizarre time as what I did then and I'm living a rerun in the uk today

Prager Street, a bombed-out ruins until the 1960s, was rebuilt as a showcase for communist ideals. Its vast, uniform apartment blocks goose-step up the boulevard to this day. The design is typical of Soviet-bloc architecture - from Moscow to Bucharest. Today, after a thorough update, they’ve become desirable places to live. They did start rebuilding dresden in the 60s but that went on for ages right through the 70s and into the early 80s it was proper destroyed dresden by the allies only building contractors with real special permits could get in there and what I saw was really strange

Yo what’s up Roman, nice to see that you had a good time in Berlin, except for the stuff at the cafe, let me apologize for my German comrades, they were probably just a bit too afraid to approach such an alpha slav. But back to point, I’m actually from Berlin and grew up in a district in east berlin. Hearing you talk about the Soviet Russian influence on my hometown was very entertaining and at some points you even taught me something new. However the main reason why I’m writing the comment is because I used to work at “restaurant Moskau” which you talked about. Unfortunately i have to say it’s not exactly a night club, it’s more of a space for holding events and such stuff. I was part of the team that held events in there, and it actually has some Soviet decorations on the inside too. Unfortunately tho, they never played any Soviet Russian music while I was working there, but if I go back into the company (I’m taking a gap year rn), I will definitely ask them to play some cheeki breeki hardbass or the Russian anthem. Keep having fun on your travels and good job on the vlog :) I really enjoyed it

I don't know if you're still in Berlin, but I live in Marzahn and you really should check it out, also at night time - it IS safe here. There is also a huge russian community in Marzahn - sometimes I sit in the tram and all around me people speaking russian only (and vietnamese - the other huge community), there are even russian supermarkets here. The Karl-Marx-Allee was really called Stalin-Allee before and it was the first major street that got reconstructed after the war (in the east part of Berlin) and they really tried to copy these kind of big streets (prospect ... right?) in Moscow/Moskau/Mockba because back then the slogan was "Von der Sowjetunion lernen, heißt siegen lernen." (Learning from the soviet union means learning to win) ... the early communists tried to copy nearly everything from the soviet union, it's a wonder we kept the german language ;-)

Thanks for showing al you show on your channel. I myself will never get to see these things in person, so I am glad I get to see them basically through your eyes. I always hated commies, but I admire how tough the people who survived communism are and it's very interesting to see what we never got to see back in the day. There wasn't a lot of your country or how people lived shown here in America, and we still only see what guys like you and Bald and Bankrupt shows. Again thank you. A lot of the things you see as very Soviet, we have here in Oslo too. From the building style, to the decoration style outside some public buildings, to the same exact tiles, to celebrating labour day, to hanging out clothes to dry. It all reminds me of where my grandmother lived, when I grew up. You might have to look for it these days, as the city is changing, but I often think about labour-class neighbourhoods in Oslo when I watch vlogs from Eastern Europe.

In terms of destalinization in east Germany that also happenened. I live in a city that used to be named Stalinstadt literally "Stalin city" but after his death the name was changed to one that is still in use today: Eisenhüttenstadt translated to "iron hut city" beacuse steel production is the main industry of the town

Very well planned video and plenty of useful snippets. I was fortunate to be in East Berlin in July 1989, a few months before the Wall came tumbling down. I remember how different West Berlin was to East. Coming out of the only underground train connection, it felt like you'd just travelled 30 years back in a time machine. Plenty of memories. Just wondering whether there are any Russians living in those commi-block buildings. Thanks again for posting. Ps. As for Germans being orderly, yes there is some truth, but I have come across some messy 'Italian' style German disorderliness ;-)

Graup, I'm not sure about your suggestions: in Leipzig you will find only single buildings of soviet style in the city center, not like an ensemble like in Berlin. The same with Dresden, Cottbus and Halle. In Halle, there is Halle-Neustadt - a whole suburb outside the centre with soviet style appartment blocks. Maybe Eisenhüttenstadt wouls be interesting in this regard.

@@henningbartels6245 it's true, they're hidden rather well in Leipzig, though there's a whole ass stalinist building on Roßplatz and the opera is stalinist as well. If you want a lot of apartment blocks you have to drive out to Grünau though, that's true. (there's also a bunch south of the Sternburger berwery for example, you just have to know where to look) It's not as imposing as in Berlin, I'll give you that

I was lucky enough to visit east-berlin in 1992-93 as my dads counstruction company back then, had been hired to "re-build/renovate" in east berlin, and he was away weeks at a time, so we drove down from denmark to stay for short weekends, living in trailers on worksites, it was exciting as a kid. and i also visited poland in 1994, before all the serious "re-building/modernaization" had been started and completed and before all the tourists really came there. Krakow was very different in 94 to what it is now, back then not a single tourist, no beggars and not really that many scammers and theives as now.

These big advertisements on the buildings, you can see this in a lot of the big East German cities, Leipzig for example, they didn’t got taken down because the West, who technically swallowed the East, didn’t make this kind of ads, therefore they never got replaced. I never realized this until I saw some tourists (I guess) from the western side of Germany take photos of that.

I drew up in a small Town in east Germany. After High School I decided to study in Berlin. I am now living in the Karl-Marx-Allee and it actually feels like I never left. I grew up in Hellersdorf, which is now joined with Marzahn. I never got the feeling that it is really dangerous. I mean you can get stabbed everywhere if you are unlucky ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But it is funny to see you in Berlin. I went to stay for five days in a russian hood in berlin in a guest apartment where i stayed with a german family who lived in the su. And man what an experience it was. So cool to hear about their stories.

You're asking in which other German city you could've experienced that type of stuff? Go to Eisenhüttenstadt, to my knowledge this was like some kind of Soviet showcase of what the perfect Soviet city would've looked like

It was also called Stalinstadt from 1953 - 1961. It was an industrial steel town created nearly from scratch as a model city. Most of it still exists, but in a very good state of repair since the DDR days.
