You should really go to Svalbard and Pyramiden. Went there a couple of years ago, and it was very interesting. Pyramiden is relatively accesible from Longyearbyen. Went there in August, and the boat trip to Pyramiden was beautiful. A lot of wildlife to look at, in addition to the beautiful scenery with mountains and fjords.

I will arrive in Oslo early on the 16th. I plan to see the parade on the 17th whatever else seems interesting on that day. I'm leaving for Gothenburg early morning of Thursday the 19th. I'm sure a meetup can happen sometime during my time in Oslo if your schedule works. I'll have a travel update in a couple days with a better break down of my days & plans.

Pyramiden and Barentsburg are located around 80 km apart. Pyramiden has been abandoned for over 20 years. There are no scheduled transport to those places from Longyearbyen, but you can travel with arranged tours.

The website for Sysselmesteren in Svalbard (available in Norwegian, English, and Russian) has no mention of any restrictions on visiting or trading with Barentsburg and Pyramiden. The Svalbard Treaty demands that all inhabitants are treated equally. A boycott or ban on visting the Russian settlements may well be illegal, ans possibly impracticable and unenforceable: Sysselmesteren's ‘polce force’ consists og 14 people.

I visited Barentsburg and Pyramiden in July 2021. At the moment it is not possible to visit the Russian towns because of the sanctions against Russia. Barentsburg is still an active mining town with a few hundred inhabitants 30% from Russia and 70 % from the Ukraine. Pyramiden that the Soviet Union took over from Sweden was abandoned in 1998. However, a few from Russia and the Ukraine live there to maintain the ghost town. The Lenin statue and the swimming pool shown in the film are not in Barentsburg, but in Pyramiden. For further information about Svalbard I recommend two videos that the US travel blogger Drew Binsky made after visiting the place.

Nice! Interesting! Some was really new to me, other facts needed refreshing. There is a lot of climate science conducted on Svalbard. And the tales about raging polarbears (icebears we call them: isbjörnar in Swedish). BTW you are touching on/using the method for learning that I am most in favour of, that is adding new information to the information one already has, as a nucleus. As a teacher I formalized a good process (now translating verbatim from Swedish) as: a) pre-understanding (which can be both vague, unconscious and faulty) - b) diving deeper with a goal - c) reenforcing. This model can be used consciously in your journalistic projects, when you present what you discover both in arm-chair travelling and travels in real life. You are a great, clear, and interest-awakening presenter! Keep your excellent work up! 🙂 Looking very much forward to your reports. Thank you for the vicarious adventures you provide with your discoveries, explanations, and objects of interest. I have one idea for you when you come back and have exhausted your travel-material: explain to us in your intelligble way, please, how a 401(k) plan for retirement works. All the best wishes for your travel preparations, I can guess you are very busy with them. (BTW May can have some really chilly days (especially mornings and nights), and some very warm afternoons, so your beany and a warm jacket against rain and storm is neccessary. Your going to be above the 60th paralell. There is already a lot of daylight then, as a compensation! Happy 17th of May!

Sorry: "60th parallel" is the correct spelling in English. To read in Denmark and Norway is made easier with a knowledge of the alphabet kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZ6th4WDrNKJhLM and so it is easier to recognize words that are common or similar.

I'm glad you like my learning style. I love art but can't draw or paint for the life of me. I visualize my art in sculpture or building it. I've won multiple awards in district wide art shows when I was in school. I created a large wax resist portrait. I turned a glass bottle into a paper mache alligator that had legs, scales, spines, all individual teeth with a tongue sticking out. It was hand painted with wet & dry brush techniques. I also won a contest entering a long exposure night shot of the City of Nashville Tennessee. I took 4 years of elected art classes as well as 4 years elected photography classes. I was in the Art club as well as the year book staff my final year in school. This will be by far my largest project but I believe it will turn out tremendous. I've been making home movies since I was a child running around the neighborhood with the family video camera in the late 90's early 00's. I like to think these are my home movies now, but I get to actually share them with the world. Thanks for being a part of that!! Can't wait for the end results.

@@Dan-fo9dk I am not saying that Svalbard is not part of Norway. I am saying what is shown is not all of Norway, since it is missing parts. I am pretty sure that a lot of people have heard about the norweigen antartic claim since it is pretty big. Norway claim the part of antartica known as Queen Mauds Land, which is close to 1/5 of Antartica and the 2 dependent anartic Islands: Bouvet Island and Peter I Island.
@Dan-fo9dk

@@MrGeneration83 I do expect that what people write is what they mean..... First you write: "That is not Norway" ....and now you are saying "....I am not saying that Svalbard is not part of Norway....". Haha .... ok, ok. I can certainly not follow that kind of "logic" ..... that is what can be defined as inconsistency. Concerning Queen Maud land, Peter I island and Bouvet island. There you are in need of updating your knowledge on these territories and even what they are named. First: Your claim: "....pretty sure that a lot of people have heard.....". Nope....not at all. It is named Antarctic for the rest of the world .....and not as you name it "antartic" and "anartic islands"...... Second: The Norwegian claim concerning Antarctic is just a claim and nothing else. It is not Norwegian territory and there is no Norwegian jurisdiction. Antarctica is an international treaty area and is irrelevant when talking about the country of Norway. Third: The Norwegian claim is named Queen Maud land (Dronning Maud land) ...and not as you name it Queen Mauds land. Fourth: There is only one Antarctic island in the claim ....and that is Peter I island .....hence not Bouvet island as you claim. Fifth: Bouvet island is located at 54,4 dgr S and 3,4 dgr W ....hence not in the Antarctic at all. Bouvet island is not a claim. It is undisputed/international accepted Norwegian territory.
