What an excellent video! You nailed it 100%. My wife and I started shopping for a camper about ten years ago. We don't get in a hurry when it comes to spending a lot of money on something and we do LOTS of research. We still haven't bought anything. But, something else that needs to be added to your list of expenses is "do you have a tow vehicle?" I bought a $42,000 F-150. Thankfully, we got it for about half that and paid it off in three years, but what about the folks that can't do that and blindly sign on the dotted line and basically wind up with a mortgage on their $80,000 truck. I'm kind of glad we haven't bought anything yet.

Could not agree with you more, well said. Going camping next week in a 20 year old truck camper purchased last year for $2500, I get questions like "don't you need room?" "where's the slide" "Is there wifi?" "Don't you need modern conveniences?" My answer I am here to camp and enjoy the outdoors not sit in a camper all day. I have a bed, shower, toilet. kitchen. and heat /AC. If I wanted fancy I would go to the Hilton LOL, If you can afford a new hi end camper or RV that's awesome but like anything make sure justify the purchase and all associated cost.

I am 71 years old. You're not off base. In my years I have learned many lessons. Luckily I have survived the financial jungle. We purposely bought a used Class A so we could pay cash. I will never finance anything. We live within our means. Unfortunately, you are right. Many impulse buyers are conned by big RV dealers. I hope some of them watched this video. Wingman, you are dead on. As you said, the way to combat any dealership is to be an educated and informed consumer. We just purchased a new Alliance 32RLS from Blue Compass. At the end of the sale, it felt like the salespeople including finance were not friendly or happy about the sale. The point I am getting too is this, if you go in as an informed customer with realistic expectations the chances of having questionable sales tactics applied will be considerably reduced. My wife and I got our 2024 Alliance 32RLS for $64,995 plus tax and fees. Financed $54,980 after trade in. The finance rep was not happy that we did not purchase any of the addons, We spent 6 seeks researching getting informed and that allowed us to not be emotional and not get sucked into purchasing something we did not know anything about. Thanks for the great videos, we used pearls of wisdom from your videos to help get a great deal.

Rv dealers and automobile dealers hate me and my wife. We are fortunate enough get ahead on our bills and now whenever we purchase a big ticket item we are able to pay cash and then we set up a payment plan and make payments back to us along with interest. We pay ourselves interest. Now we are way ahead. It also give us bargaining power when looking , we have walked out of several rv dealers and automobile salesmen. I will never purchase anything from camping world. Years ago we were looking for a rv and looked at 2 different camping world lots . Found out then that they were scamming people.

In 2019, we purchased a 2018 Intech Luna Lite for $15k. When it came to financing, they initially came out with a 20 year payment plan. I told them straight up for the amount, I would only go for a five year plan. its the cost of a car and I wanted the option to payoff early if I chose to. I had done enough research on RVs to know they devalue hugely the moment they drive off the lot. I was baffled that they would even offer a 20 year plan on an RV! I believe they are now trying to capitalize on the type of person who purchased an RV back in 2020 and tried to sell it in 2021. The RV world seems like whoever is projecting needs to be fired. You don't base a banner year for future revenues when it was a fluke year and people were desperate to get out of quarantine one way or another. They were low information buyers. You are not wrong!

Love the video. I own a campground currently. Why are they painting these RVs black, gray or brown? Texas heat beats the heck out of dark exteriors and absorbs the hot sun energy into the RV. Then people add floor A/C units to keep the RV cool because the roof units won't cut it. Then they pop breakers because of their electrical demand. Every RV should be white. I cannot believe they make BLACK roof A/C covers - overworks the roof A/C unit. Let's make life harder, right?

Allen you and I would get along famously, I've owned RVs for 50 years and I love camping/glamping but I did the Airplane/Hotel thing as well. I despise Camping World because I've seen first hand how they ripped people off. I know a lot about RVs and have done all my own service and repair work outside of warranty for all those years. You are correct, people are stupid and get all caught up in the allure of going to that lake or forest and setting up camp not thinking about how many Air/Hotel vacations they could take with what they will spend annually on that RV especially in today's money. Unless a person has a way to Tax right-off the expenses of an RV they are about the worst thing (along with boats) you can buy today. They are a never ending money pit until you sell it.

I wouldn't buy a camper that's not built after 2008-9. They're out there you just need to take time, get it inspected and fix what you can yourself. I found many years ago that depending on myself instead of others is the way to go. Thanks Wing

If $12,000 was all they were getting talked into it wouldn't be so bad, but have you been to a campground lately?? Have you seen how many $80-100,000, 150,000+ campers are out there?? And lets not start on the trucks they've bought to pull them. There's nobody spending $12,000, but there's a CRAP LOAD of people spending a LOT MORE money on these crappy RVs, and there's NO WAY 90% of these families can truely afford thee things, especially as the RVs get older and depreciate out while the owners still have 10 years left to pay. Not to mention they're paying $350 to go camping for 2 weeks. I know that my 30yo diesel pusher class A may not be the nicest RV in the park, but every single dime of it is paid for, and I've got I've got half as much invested as most of these people have in their tow vehicles, let alone the campers Yes, our country is in a sad state of affairs, and I really don't see a clean way out of it. People don't like to hear about government controls, but I'm thinking much of it is really needed to get rid of this debt everyone is in.

If you bought this trailer by prepaying all taxes and fees (amount unknown) for a remaining cost of $12,000 with 15% down ($1,800) and then paid $100/month for 236 months (about 20 years), that's a total of $25,400, more than double the $12,000 come-on price! (And that of course does not include any subsequent costs.)

Way to go Allen. I went and looked at a Coleman Lantern BH (bunkhouse). It’s just me and my dog Murphy so I figured I could take the top mattress off. Leave the bottom mattress for him when he wants to just relax and then I would have the queen size bed upfront. As soon as I entered the RV, I could tell just by looking that everything in the RV was of the lowest possible quality. I mean everything from knobs on the stove to shower fixtures. There was so much flex in the walls that it blew my mind. I can’t imagine hauling this thing down the road with any kind of weight in it. It’s sad that a company like Coleman, who at one time in my view, made a great pop-up camper, has sunk to this level. I would never, ever buy one of these new or used. There was nothing, nothing in that camper that said anything but cheap.

@Mark-et8vh Coleman only licensed their brand name to Dutchmen (Keystone RV) for those units. As you said, these units are made with the lowest possible quality of everything they put into it. They target the young, uneducated family who want to buy the RV dream (lie) and the stealerships convince them that $11k is a bargain for this brand new RV. Marcus Lemonis preys on these types of customers (suckers). This is how he has become a billionaire. It's disgusting and although I am not a particularly religious person, there is a special place in Hell for him and people like him that take advantage of others.

@@kckettridge Thank you so much for the reply. When I was a kid (58 now) Coleman stood for quality, budget-friendly, durable camping gear. I still own two Coleman lanterns, a cooler and a stove. My now ex wife and I purchased a brand new, top of the line, Coleman Fleetwood pop-up in, I think, 1997. It was innovative, comfortable, durable, tons of storage space (even a commode and outdoor shower if we needed it and trouble free. Each autumn, we’d take one last weekend romp, then bring it home, clean it, detail it and most importantly, scrub and re-water repellant the canvas. We’d add mouse repellant and haul it to a local marina and have it shrink wrapped. When we divorced (amicably) in 2010, I kept it two more seasons, to take my daughter camping every other weekend to my buddy’s farm to ride ATV’s. I finally sold it to a family friend when my daughter went off to college and they are still still using it to this day. It saddens me, that Coleman has leased their name to a company that puts crap out like this. I told the salesman: “you have got to be kidding me”. Now, I’m recovering from cancer and retired. When I get a bit more healed, I want to buy a camper (hard shell) for me and my 9’year old dog, to see the country for whatever years he has left. I am considering looking at used, pre-covid campers on the used market, but I have no clue what to look for. I wish, like real estate, there were a buyers representative, that could help me find something decent for me and my dog Murphy. This is a ‘one shot deal’ paying cash out of my retirement and hopefully hitting the road next spring. Finding a good, reputable dealer for the secondary used market, or honest face-to-face sellers, is proving very difficult. I’m half-tempted to just buy a tent, but my spine now wears a cage, where my tumor used to be, so setting up and crawling into a tent, is not a sound plan. I’m left with this desire to see the US, but frightened that making this dream a reality, might be a bridge too far in this market. Fingers crossed. Thanks again for your reply.

@@Mark-et8vh there are decent rigs out there, you just have to find one and whichever RV you choose, get an independent inspection by a reputable certified RV Inspector. Even if you buy a brand new one and if the stealership says they won't allow an independent inspector on their lot or say they already inspected it, walk away. I am a few years older than you and my wife and I retired last year so we are now able to enjoy our RV a whole lot more than we ever have. We have owned RV's for the past 20 years and they all had some issue or another. We actually had a Coleman (Dutchmen) before Keystone RV bought Dutchmen. It had fewer issues than our Heartland Toy Hauler did but the new ones are "PURE CRAP" regardless of brand. The exception may be Alliance and the darling of the RV industry right now. Brinkley but they are higher-end units than most of us could afford and they are the only two manufacturers that I know of that are not owned by a big corporation like Forest River, Keystone RV, Winnebago, etc.

I agree with your view of bs $98 mo. We have those ads in Colorado. I bought a $12500 list price entry RV at trailer world for cash in 2021 and look at the trailer as my retirement hobby including fishing trips. I enjoy the upgrades I have done on new $1000 mattress. 200 amp lithium . 40 amp mppt. 20 amp mppt. Vent covers. Upgraded dinner cushions. Trailer brake controller. Weight dist and sway control. Few issues I fixed. Bottom line I look at the cost to maintain and upgrade as my hobby in retirement.

Kudos Allen. The RV industry has been fleecing people from the beginning. Here's another one for ya. Flex Arnor and R. Amor claim to have a lifetime roof. They advertise a lifetime roof, tell people it's warrantees for a lifetime. When you read the warranty ...way down the bottom it states....product.."should last" 20 years and customer needs to apply another top coat from them and they are responsible for the application of top coat. If the customer doesn't apply the top coat the product fails, I am sure the warranty is void. So how is this a lifetime product? Kind of a play on words, don't ya think.

You are so right on your breakdown of this issue. If these RVs were the best made units in the world, maybe, but, except for Prevost they are junk. Having spent about 8 years in the industry I make that claim from real world experience. Add the financial concerns and you have a disaster waiting for inept buyers. Ford is actually wanting to go to a 12 year payment schedule and Seattle is talking about legacy mortgages of 90 years passing the loan to families for multiple generations. The reality of the situation is that there's nothing left of the American economy. We just have to admit that and pay the price.

I never buy anything on monthly payments. That’s a recipe for disaster. I actually looked at those trailers online and they have very few windows compared to my 1985 trailer. It also weighs more than mine, so I would have to buy a different tow vehicle. I’m more interested in a used B van, but they don’t return calls or emails very well, so they still have it. I probably save a lot of money just driving my car and staying in hotels, or camping in my tent

When Tom Johnson owned his dealership in Marion, NC he used to stock some of the best quality travel trailers, 5th wheels, and motorhomes available. He did a lot of business with NASCA drivers, etc. After Camping World bought him out the long time sales force was all gone and over half the inventory was these cheapo entry level Coleman travel trailers.

People don’t calculate all the costs; tags/license, insurance (& most don’t have the right kind), storage, maintenance etc etc. plus like you said camping costs, gas, etc. Not to dissuade anyone, but they all have to be figured in the total costs . . .

Keep in mind, most contracts on an RV are 20yr regardless of the quality of the RV.

HELLO WINGMAN ! I religiously view your videos and pretty much agree with the things you say and suggest. I too owned an RV Park for over six years back in the 90's and also found the same issues with some RVers as you have mentioned, which is what led us to sell the park. At that point, we full timed in a very large motor home (Prevost, 45'). We traveled through the states over and over and really loved the full-time life. But, family matters required us to settle down. Which we did, in Florida. I also owned an RV sales business for several years back in the early 2000's. Me and my partner would purchase motor homes from auctions, clean them up, and sell for a profit. I can recall bidding side by side with the folks from PPL and at that point, became friends with most of their buyers. But all that ended around 2015. But I have RV'd since 1970 and did love it, until the roads and parks became so congested. Anyway, I like what you are saying about Camping World......They started out as a very friendly and trustworthy company but turned "crooked" once they got into RV sales. And they have continued with operating in very deceitful manners. I cannot believe folks continue to buy from them.........but why? Keep up your virtual campfire!

I've been "thinking", looking kicking tires etc. The ONLY thing that makes sense is buy a good used unit. OR just rent when you want to use one. I HATE renting, but with RV's I think renting is probably the way to go.

Since I’m between rvs right now I checked into this here in w mi. $120/day for camper Plus’s drop off & pick up fee plus’s deposit plus xtra for pet fee plus’s also paying for campground site . . Ended up being average $275/day overall for 4 days. No thanks!!

I bought a 2006 Coachan Clipper 17 FQ. A real cheaply made piece of junk as most RV's are today and in the past. Paid $11,000 new and paid cash. Things were falling off on the inside and banging against the frame on the outside. Fortunately I am a DIY kind of person that finds out how to repair things and then does it myself. Me and my wife go to Florida 3 months a year and the price of a monthly stay at a RV resort is now $1,500 to over $4,000 per month. Most people would say that is more expensive than an apartment costs per month. This is what is killing the adventure. They make crap and then you insure the crap that they make and then you pay out the nose to stay on a piece of dirt for a month. Do not get me going on gas/ oil/ tolls/hotels/road repairs etc

People need to read the sales contract before signing anything. Actually take home and read it and then if it makes sense buy it.

Hi Allan, Happy July 4th 🎉. I actually know someone who purchased this trailer from Camping World for cash. They do use it and travel extensively. You're right, it's not an expensive unit, but, listen, everything depreciates.... EXCEPT for houses..... around 13:41 seconds you said.... don't buy a monthly payment on a house....?? Really ? I don't know very many people, maybe some who decide to move and cash in the house they have been in for years and move to another state, who pay cash for a house..... Houses appreciate in value.... RVs like cars always go down in value, so, when you said it's worth less each year...I think everyone knows that, it's part of the purchase price when you buy any car. Yes, all those costs for maintenance, storage ( it probably won't make any difference on value), insurance, vehicle registration, minor repairs....I agree with everything you said. The biggest loss of value is buying something and not using it..... unfortunately, a lot of people do this.... So, it's not just Camping World, they all sell the "romantic notion" of RV Life.... You'd better love doing that...or just rent one occasionally.... You actually made a perfect arrangement for that. Owning and operating an RV is like owning a "boat on wheels".... it's incredibly expensive.... I analyzed my total costs and I own my RV, no payments.... based on the number of miles it's like $3 per mile.... If you're not using it and taking trips, the cost per mile can actually increase.... People need to check out all the details.... it's very important. ----Mark

Our 2024 Heartland pioneer is a fire hazard. Camping world nor the manufacturer cares at all. August makes a year we’ve had it.

Best to be a tuff negotiator, have money for substantial down or pay cash and find your own financing. The so called incentive are mostly a con. You can frequently get better rates on your own.

Does it exclude finance charges? This ought to be illegal. I hope no one goes for this. Read the fine print, and if you do not understand it or you want to be absolutely sure, paying an attorney will save you a lot of $$$$.

Lots of people go for this. That’s why camping world has made so much money and why the wingman keeps pounding this issue. Far too many people who don’t know how to read a contract, don’t care how to read a contract and just sign on the dotted line where a salesman has told him to. Sometimes they don’t even realize after they’ve been taken.

Everyone knows that there is no quality in Coleman products. There should be a law that the advertised price is the drive off the lot price, excluding license and state sales tax.
