I played dota e-v-e-r-y-d-a-y during college. Me and 4 other guys played it more than we studied. We were a 2.5kmmr average party. Man those were the best times. Before college ended only 2 of us remained and we reached our peak of 5.3k-5.5k. Then we had to go find jobs... no more time no more energy to practice. Reaction time got really bad. Eventually our MMR reset and we both just played normal matches. 5 years more into the future i play alone now, just turbo matches. I dunno.. i still enjoy it but it's really not the same. Part of life to outgrow activities. And I think majority of the dota audience are pretty damn old at this point.

I love Dota and Dota 2 with all my heart. But damn, this fckinh game gave me carpal tunnel and extended my stay in college for 5 yrs. Now, maybe it is slowly dying because my generation of players(late millenial/early zoomers) also moved on from the game. They have families and jobs to tend to. Great times but sometimes we gotta move on things😔

In my opinion this is what LoL does right. People in that community complain about the unbalance champions but they never last more than a month. Every 2 weeks the meta changes and what was broken yesterday, now is useless and that makes the game feel fresh. Dota 2 don't need patches that frequent but 1 or two every so often wouldn't hurt.

@@drakesacrum8445 league feels fresh? Wow started playing league 3 years ago, still do sometimes it's exactly the same garbage. Going from dota to league can only be due to 3 reasons 1. As a former player, i think the issues are much bigger than patches. It’s about the game itself, no newcomer wanna get stomped in every match they play and impossible learning curve because everyone beside me already played for hundred years

Thats kinda the point. The game is not newcomer friend, and wants you to commit. The culture of DOTA is also the same. It just isn't fun to play, unless you have friends to carry and teach you. I know to many who quit DOTA literally after a couple hours. The sad part is that the DOTA commnity just makes fun of quitters, instead of reflect on how to improve new player experience. So yeah, DOTA sinking was always written in the walls.

My feel is that the meta shift and how heroes were redesigned to adapt to it had a huge impact. Since they clearly balanced the game towards the Brawl gameplay, and characters that used to be drafted specifically to win the game by unconventional ways were redesigned to be more brawlish, then the game became very stable and predictable, which turns things boring (plus all the problems you've mentioned). What I really liked from Dota was that you really had different strategies like 4 protect 1, split push, midgame death ball, teamfight. Now even characters that were recognized as splitpushers have lame TF skills. And with this it's easier for the meta to be boring and heroes to become super OP because you don't have a game style counterplay.
@ousqa

Yeah I think they've recognized that more and more people are getting into the competitive scene and styling the game for that. While more options are fun having a more even playing field does raise the skill level.

Yep i totally agree with this statement as meepo and broodmother user. They really make all hero seems to have same play style, even meepo and broodmother are no longer good early game hero to have fast end. Meanwhile, they are still trash after 40 minutes game. So it is 100% not playable hero just because they "delete" the potential of meepo and broodmother

The MMR, the competition, the tournaments... it all pushed dota into a very specific direction. There was a time where the international didn't exist, when players could not legitimately make millions of dollars from this thing, and because of that it didn't take itself too seriously. You could pick whatever you want, cause mayhem and chaos, but still style on your opponents and laugh at them because of broken matchups, only for them at laugh back at you when they inevitably do the same, and it will be all in good, clean fun. And then come dota2, they added rankings, and money (for the pros) on the table, and after that things slowly changed. There is now the potential for outrage and drama if shit is too unbalanced, people will shit and meme on the game if a particular changelog has abusable builds (or bugs) within it, and if the unbalanced stuff doesn't get patched out by the time the international arrives, then you risk getting one-sided pro games that aren't engaging for viewers to bother with. Smurfing is viewed as an actual issue, rather than a surprise boss fight - "you're playing a strong player right now", and newbies feel the system screwed them over while they're just starting up the grind and learning the game. They also can't seem to figure out how to sell their dota plus (without it feeling like cheating) and battle pass (so much useless, temporary fluff in the rewards). All this might have attributed to valve making smaller and smaller changes as time went by. They stopped being adventurous, and has now sunk into a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality.

Currently, there is so much broken shit that you have to deal with it makes the game a chore to play. I think the complexity of Dota 2 would mean that a major gameplay changing patch happening every 2 weeks would completely destroy anyone that doesn't dedicate ungodly amounts of time to the game, as they wouldn't have a chance to learn how to play with the changes before new ones arrive. Dota 2 has its place in my memories, and it would be sad sorry if it fell. I think that maybe one day I could come back to at least watch some games, and get crazy about those, because I don't really have it to play it. It would be nice to see this game get its place solid.

I will share my own take about the matter. So a little background about my experience in competitive Esport titles: I have thousands of hours in CSGO and probably a bit under two thousand in Dota. I'm playing since about an decade ago, when I started secondary school. In those days I used to main one of the games heavily for months, and then switch to the other game again. Even back then I noticed that moving back to cs from Dota is way easier than other way around. Sure, your mechanics feel out of touch but honestly if you play like 2 hours of deathmatch, you can play CS almost like you had not taken a break for two months. This does not apply to Dota, and it's not about the basic mechanics of the game. It feels like every time you decide to start playing dota again, you have to learn a different game all again. Nowadays I don't have time to play games all day everyday and therefore Dota does not feel appealing, since they constantly make changes to the maps, they nerf your favorite heroes from last patch to obsolete and add new items and heroes occasionally. For a person that does not have as much time to waste as a secondary school kid, this isn't very appealing. The beauty of CS in comparison is that it's still basically the same game it was a decade ago. Sure, they have added some maps and stuff, but the thing is that the mechanics are the same, they rarely touch the weapon balance, and the things that make you good at the game stay. I do acknowledge that game balance is harder to maintain with 123 heroes and 208 items in game. Anyways, here is some propositions, feel free to share how you feel about them! 1. Stop adding heroes and items. every hero and item added makes game balance harder to maintain, which is already proven to be very difficult since everything you change about something affects synergies and counters between items and heroes. Also the argument of getting bored with same old heroes is not very valid as there are already too many heroes for anyone to master. Even to master thee is an achievement and the best players in the world have at most a dozen in their hero pool at any given time. The problem of dota is not that there is only one thing to play or build, it's quite the opposite. 2. Minor balance patch weekly instead of major patch twice a year. In these patches only the strongest and the weakest should be adjusted, only as much is necessary. Valve has a dataset of over 3 million games weekly, and constant feedback from players available. This is enough data to show, which heroes and items are the most OP/UP and to make educates guesses about how to fix those. This way we don't need to play against some bullshit hero for 6 months straight, and even if the mark is missed, new patch is coming next week. 3. Stop making major changes to the map. In my opinion the best map we ever had was the one pre reborn and the decision to make changes to something that was not broken was not the wisest thing to do. I have never heard anyone saying that they like when valve changes the map which says something at least. It's gruesome to learn wards, stack timings etc. all again every time that valve decides to change the map. The map pre reborn was basically the same for ages and no one ever complained about a thing. Realistically I don't see valve changing back to pre reborn map, so what I propose is that they hone the current layout to perfection, and never make major changes to the map again.

I stopped playing probably like 6 months ago, BUT I will say that the way I turned Nyx Assassin into a CORE style hero was just about unbeatable. It was my bulwark and my battering ram because it was almost impervious to anyone's stupid OP "meta" build. Constantly had enemy teams trying to mock me and tilt me because of how much trauma I was causing their brains just by refusing to allow their META bullshit to work. Essentially, I would build Nyx into this brutal tank where he could take hit after hit and come in and out of combat almost like a Tidehunter or Timbersaw built for tanking could. But at the same time, I would be draining mana, popping blademail, throwing Impales, destroying channeling and reflecting dmg and stunning with Spiked Carrapace. It was just a beauty to behold. It worked in every rank I reached and I was just gaining more and more ranks. This is why the "meta" is such a boring and uncreative strategy. Sure, if people don't know to outwit their opponents, then sure, build META. But if you have a brain, if you know how to play very crafty and witty and use your opponents expectations against them, then you can do incredible things in multiplayer games. Most people just try to win via brute force and merely outfarming and out clicking. Fuck that. My Nyx Assassin build would ROUTINELY wreck a pos 1 or 2 on the enemy team as a pos 3 when I would have HALF the gold that they would because I would get Shard, Vendetta in at super sonic bug speeds VROOM, and then pull off Nyx's combo while right clicking them down. If they tried to respond, which, of course they would, because they'd be cocky carries who thought that I was their average shitty Nyx player and would think they could two shot me with their carry. But when I popped the blademail and hood of defiance and my nukes started coming back up after the initial combo (if they weren't already DEAD from that) then they'd run so hard trying to escape. A good player doesn't need the META. Now, that isn't gonna stop OP heroes from doing bullshit you can't stop, like when Marci was first released (fuck that hero eternally, and fuck Valve for creating some stupid POS waifu anime hero in DOTA). That said though, in 98 percent of cases, my build would absolutely demolish the enemy team, I could run in to a 5 man, take a key enemy OUT instantly with Nyx's nukes, pull out of combat while they all threw their nukes and stuns at me, survive it all because I built very tanky and had a blademail that dissuaded chasing and by then, if my team was halfway decent they would descend on the survivors with my pos 1 and 2 cleaning up the stealth bombing I just did. I really do miss those days and that gameplay, but the reason I left is precisely because of how toxic the community is/was. It just became zero fun to jump into a game where the META was so RIGIDLY defined that if you chose a hero someone didn't like they'd just insta throw or come and grief your lane on the laning phase or feed or whatever. It was miserable. Like many who will read this, if you've read this far into my rant, you'll probably also be like "Psssh, Nyx pos 3? Bullshit. Fucking noob." And that is precisely the issue with DOTA2 as a game. They see a hero, assume it does ONE thing and ONE thing only and never take creativity into their own hands. They just follow stupid "mathematically correct" builds on websites and assume that's the only way the game can be played. But realistically, what is mathematically correct or what is "meta" is only meta in cases where actions are predictable, where enemies are also "meta". If I'm not playing the meta, then I'm essentially playing 4D Chess because think about it: when is the last time you saw a POS3 Nyx Assassin? It's only funny til I'm insta killing you and walking away unscathed or tanking for my team in teamfights while reflecting dmg back at enemies. DOTA2 is a game with incredible strategic possibilities, but one instead people have turned into a game MORE predictable than Chess and it has lead to mind numbing (and dumbing) toxicity and boredom. People do not CHERISH creativity and new ideas in DOTA2. DOTA2 players are, by and large, just like the Borg from Star Trek. Booooring. That's why I play games where creativity IS possible to be rewarded, like Path of Exile for instance where you can come up with your own build that no one has thought of yet and then absolutely wreck. Or even Magic the Gathering where you can create a deck of cards that is totally your own, never before done quite the same way and which is actually PRAISED for its ingenuity and clever strategy. DOTA2 is the fast food of the competitive videogame industry where the recipe for a burger is just placed on a fucking screen and all the ingredients aren't allowed to be changed.

I've been a Dota2 enthusiast since 2014. Before that, I only played WC3 and Starcraft campaings like there was no tomorrow. Then one day, my cousin showed me the Dota All Starts game mode and I instantly fell in love. Then, I heard about Dota2 and the rest's history. I love Dota2. It was an important piece of my teenage years and a key component in my life. I simply can't express enough how much this game means to me. However, not all good things last forever and last year my focus on the game started to wither. Many reasons for this, mostly me growing up and wanting to experience new things and how the game just felt like it didn't do it for me like it used to. Now, I mostly play League with my friends, good people, and we chill and laugh. We have a good time. I admit I had some reservations over playing League at first. It felt like I was cheating a longtime relantionship GF. Weird stuff. But over the course of weeks, I slowly started feeling better. There was no more guilt. Then I really got into the game. And I started to notice how Riot treats it's IP. I felt rage. An amazing animated series, multiple events, lore expanding spin offs, collaborations with talented artists, etc. Sure the League players are stupid and toxic af, never satisfied with anything Riot gives em. But I'd be damned if I say that Dota is better that League because God strike me if I lie, Valve has done nothing for Dota in the past 5 years. Artifact and Underlords were poor excuses of game spin offs that tried to suck money more than being an actual game to help expand it's lore. Dota is cursed to be under the hands of Valve. Valve hasn't made any real games excepting HF:Alix (A VR game over all things, because a VR is something we all possess in our homes) and it's doesn't look like they want to make any at all. I'm sorry but Dota is destined to be forgotten, if it's not already on that path. I'm heartbrokren, but I have to move on. We all have to. Edit: typos

Speaking of the Netflix series, what got into Valve's head thinking they can shape up a lore so solid and structured it can pass for a media franchise they can bank on for a very long time? I've never sensed that in IceFrog (and I seriously doubt anyone manages to) to place stock in lore when all he does throughout his tenure from DOTA 1 and 2 is just fiddle with the minute mechanics of the game. He can't really zoom out to the biggest of big pictures of a game's design to ever think about ingame economies, sound, backstory, and only manages to obsess over his little plusses and minuses in "balancing" his roster of heroes. And nothing else.

I do agree on you on this. I stopped being excited for dota because of how little there is done in developing the game and when we do get a patch its VERY disappointing. Valve needs to wake up because this game better not end up like tf2, another title that i love but stopped playing because valve has pretty much abandoned that game, with the community starving to death for any content updates. I would not be surprised if Dota ended up like tf2 where there is no new game play content anymore (or rather, there would be minor balance changes and a few tweaks in some numbers) and a major portion of the updates are just going to be sets (just like how tf2 is being treated). Honestly, a part of me wants Dota to fail so that valve can finally be AWARE of their lack of involvement in their games, a wake up call to get them to take action. But seeing as to how people are still pumping a lot of their money into the game, why would they need to update it anyways? It might just be a case of how history is repeating itself with tf2 and Dota might just be abandoned in development. Only difference here is the player base wont be as bad as tf2's because the e-sport scene is keeping this game alive. To me it seems that valve is putting their attention to expanding their company to be more that just a game company, examples are the Steam Deck, Steam VR Hardware, and hey even the anime. Valve may be succeeding as a company, with Steam being the largest game distributor in the gaming industry and expanding themselves broader with hardware, but as game developers, Valve has failed themselves.

Why I stopped playing (in no particular order). 1. They change the game all the time. I don't have the time to keep researching things out and re-learning everything all the time. 2. They reset the ladders all the time. I don't have time to grind myself out of the ELO-hell all the time. 3. The match making system was not enjoyable. It felt like I was given forced losses. I felt like they gave me teams that I absolutely could not win with. I felt like they did this in purpose, because in gambling related neuroscience they know that it's not winning that makes you addicted (it makes u feel calm and satiated and for me winning makes me feel like I can stop playing and go take a nap) but it's losing that makes you addicted. This was probably the main thing that killed the game for me. 4. Too much fighting over who gets to play pos 1 and who plays support. If you play pos 1 your supports often are absolutely horrendous. 5. MMR. Low mmr is elo hell. If you want to get out of elo hell, you need to grind a lot of games. I don't have time for elo-grinding.

The main reason Dota 2 isnt as big as LoL today is that Dota games are way tooooo long, as an adult i dont have a time as i used to. I don’t think the game needs constant patches to feel fresh, under one condition. The game is properly balanced. This is the first time I’ve seen a single item warp the entire meta and be a must buy on every hero no matter the team. I know things like Pipe and such are always going to be good as long as their buffs aren’t run into the ground, but it’s hardly the same as seeing a meme hammer in every single game. If Valve properly patches Dota and can do so in a small amount of patches, I don’t feel like it needs constant updates honestly. Dota is a game that’s deep enough to keep on giving, like TF2. I can keep playing the game because I love the game at its core. Attempting to copy League for the sake of Copying League because they got big player base is something valve would do, and we would all hate because League has serious issues none of us want infecting dota. But if Dota NEEDS this update amount they should do it (instead of feeling obligated to update on a schedule). I just don’t want it to end up like league where the end goal isn’t actually to balance the game but to push the balance somewhere else so they can go “ooooo look there, another patch! Come back and play because your favorite hero is dominating the meta this time!” I felt like dota didn’t get many updates before and was still balanced and fun (though more than it does now), the issue now is like you said they’re so out of touch and care so little that the updates they DO put out suck and take a dump on the game.

As a former TF2 player, and now almost a decade into CSGO. I don't want this to come across as too rude but welcome to the club. I was always under the impression Dota was valve's golden child, and I think for a good chunk of time it was. I don't play dota but I have watched every TI and for a game that has The International, I'm a little stunned they've not had more people on the game. I remember when I used to play TF2, a group of people representing the community(casters, players) went to the Valve office to make a case for how to improve the game for a competitive setting. Now they did add a competitive mode into the game but I it was years too late and by that time the people that spearheaded these changes were effectively gone. They also didn't get a positive view of valve's work structure, people seemed to work on games willy-nilly and unfortunately that doesn't seem to have changed in supporting their games.

From what I've learn from other Competitive games. There are two problems in Dota. 1. It has a problem for new player to understand the mechanic to get them hook for the game. unlike its mobile counter part MLBB (mobile legends bang bang) if you know that game. Yes that game is easy, that's the thing it is easy to understand that a child can play it. Unlike Dota, Dota is precise, competitive and have a high skill ceiling for each match you play. Yeah if you ask a new player this do you want to play a game that will take 45min - 3 hours and get bullied or absolutely will get stomp. Yeah they will uninstall that and play other games 2. Smurfs can kill a game on the long run. I learned that from playing rts games. If you are a smurf in any game. I hope your happy that your game that you play is dying. NGL I have a multiple accounts in CS but I used them if a friend wants to play just to have the same skill lobby or just have a chill match on pubs to get exp for cases. Valve have some problem on updates here and there in Dota 2. I will ask you this did you ask a TF2 player how their game is... So yeah don't complain if valve didn't release many updates for you cause only have small update from here and there and no new content since the jungle inferno. Maybe both valve and the dota2 community are the problem. CS have the same kind of problem also, Less content, Smurfing, cheating, a high skill ceiling, same core gameplay as old CS but CS is still getting new players and it still thriving as a competitive game because its easy to understand and easy for a viewer/player to get hook. This video is great.

Due to the fact that valve's way of doing work is simply by letting the employee's work on what they want makes it very hard to have a consistent patch schedule like league does. The problem is in the way valve does it's job which is good for single player games but bad for live service games

To be honest all the things you named as bad points are big pluses on my side. If it was up to me there wouldn't be any new heroes ever. Every time Dota 2 makes new hero all I can think about is: am I going to stop playing it because they changed it. If I was a LOL player and after one month pause I find out the game is totally changed it would be a big motivation to stop playing it. I agree some things need to change when players find a bug or something. But why change something every few months? For gamers who do nothing but play games maybe it makes sense but for everyday people that play a game or two every second day after work it doesn't make sense to change it so fast. Every so often I find myself in situation when I finally learn how some new stuff is working, new builds or whatever, it gets changed. Its annoying and disappointing to find out the game has changed right after you started enjoying it... again. Playing it since 2015 but every time new patch come along I think about abandoning it.

I see and understand point. However, it does objectively make any game boring and stale in the long run. The people like you who are mostly casuals and hate change or don't like to adapt would probably, like you said, hate it. But fequent patches have been proven to make games fresh and it works almost every time if executed correctly. So what I'm saying is that you are just in the minority. Take for example, League. You misjudged "change" as a total overhaul to a game. In reality it doesn't. They are just slight buffs or nerfs to champions that will temporarily make them meta, but you still play them just the same as how they were from the very birth of the game, only they would either deal more or less damage, have increased or decreased base health. The players don't need to re-learn a new mechanic, but needs to slightly adjust their strategies to counter said meta. It doesn't even hurt the casuals because the changes are simple, but challenges them to use their brain to adapt and that's why patches makes the game fresh and fun. They are just stat improvements, that's all.
@josipbuzgo2945
@josipbuzgo2945 Жыл бұрын
@@gravelor78 well in general it makes sense but maybe that's just me, I don't like changes. But now after this update I just can't make myself start a game. For me this ne patch is not "slightly adjusting strategies to counter meta" it is changing gameplay and making a 180 turn. Firstly I have to take some time to learn all the new buildings, their roles, their location, their use and how and when to use them. I need to learn new ways on map, new items, and new movements. Map control is now a class for itself. I just don't want to be forced to take classes on how to play it after the patch. Today I wanted to chillex and have a game or two, but that was not possible and it happens way more than it should. I don't mind new updeits that keep game fresh and deny it getting stale and boring but this is not it. This is changing the game big time and making me play arcade rather than actual game. I am maybe not invested as much as I should so I just refuse to take time and learn new things. I wish patches were optional, make few versions of Dota (alpha, beta, gamma) and than improve one little by little , make second change every month, and go crazy with the third but let me have my Dota and let me play it, when bug gets reported give it a new twist to change the meta but keep the same game. I get your opinion and I might be a minority but I strongly believe this new patch will make me and few other people love this game less and maybe even quit playing.

I think your completely right Blitz. I haven't played dota in god knows how many months and when I saw the battlepass I felt like the writing was on the wall for this game. Valve's love and care for dota has really taken a downward spiral with it being the lack of patches, themed events, map skins/reworks and dead custom game modes. I wouldn't be surprised if dota gets the hots treatment in about 1.5 - 2 years if Valve continues with what they're doing right now. It's so frustrating seeing Valve butcher a game you've loved for years just being cut a thousand times until it slowly fades away.
