▬ Information ▬
House of the Dragon is an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal for HBO. It is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones and is based on Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood. Set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war, known as the "Dance of the Dragons", and the war itself. The main contenders are Houses Targaryen, Hightower, Stark, Baratheon, Arryn and Velaryon.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an American fantasy television series developed by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay for the streaming service Amazon Prime Video. Based on the novel The Lord of the Rings and its appendices by J. R. R. Tolkien, the series is set thousands of years before Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and depicts the major events of Middle-earth's Second Age. It is produced by Amazon Studios in association with New Line Cinema and in consultation with the Tolkien Estate.

Preston is way too forgiving about how bad ROP is. I’m not someone who cares about the casting of POC as elves or dwarves. I care more about plot and character development. The series was just awful at developing character and story arcs. When it comes to GOT, Preston is overly critical of the most minor dialogue, character motivations. It’s the same as his take on WOT. Not sure why he is so lenient on other shows but not GOT or HOTD.

I will never understand the choice to mess with the Second Age and already heavily estabilished characters by both the books and movies instead of having the creative freedom to condense the Kin-strife of Gondor, the Wars of Dragons and Dwarves, the Fall of Arnor and the origin of the rohirrim into more or less simultaneous events happening in smaller span of time. These are all events of an earlier Third Age with links to the dark age in Middle Earth presented by the PJ movies with plenty of space to fill in the gaps left by the author. Apart from the Akallabeth, the forging of the rings and the wars of Eregion and the Last Alliance, the Second Age is pretty boring and as hardcore fan, a bad choice of adaptation into a multi season show.

Rings of Power is a lesson in basic story telling. Peter Jackson’s films actually build to something while Rings of Power does a lot of talking that goes absolutely nowhere. I feel bad for the actors because they’re trying really hard but the material is not there.

It was a mid fantasy show it wasn't a Lord of the rings show. Don't care about the race of actor swaps, but the problem for many fans who hated it was how SO far afield it went from what actually happened in the second age that it boggles the mind. This should have been a show about elrond and his more and more distant great-nephews who were kings of numenor. And a meditation on immortality vs mortality.

*EDIT:* OH, man! I didn't realize I wrote as much as I did. Sorry, I was just writing my thoughts as I was listening. Long comment lol. 'Rings of Power' wasn't necessarily bad, it was just a divergent interpretation of what we expected from a 'Lord of the Rings' adaptation. There are positive and negatives about the show, the setpieces and props were underwhelming and had a cosplay-esque feel about them. The dialogue wasn't horrible, the delivery of the dialogue was awkward enough to make you cringe at times, not often. But it was there. The actors were good yet some felt miscast, performances were unremarkable at times and Galadriel was just boring yet amusing at the same time, due to Morfydd Clark over emoting at times and forcing the 'female empowerment' in Galadriel when it isn't appropriate. The actor that played Sauron was probably the best actor on the set, he just understood he needed to be a charismatic, misunderstood yet tortured soul that was hiding a malicious aspect to him. Going back and rewatching the show, it's completely obvious that he is Sauron, yet you second guess yourself because it almost seemed too obvious and that's due to the dialogue and *how he portrayed* his character. Yet, he would have done so much better had he been cast as Isildur, because *all of those traits I mentioned* tell the tale of Isildur. Isildur was reluctant to do his duty, he was a tortured soul yet he rose to the occasion and he became a king in spite of this. All of which eventually became his undoing when he came into contact with the One Ring, and Charlie Vickers embodied that spirit with his performance. Not to mention that Sauron looked like he could have been Aragorn' younger brother. This is coming from someone that didn't hate the show, mind you. Once I realized that we weren't getting an accurate adaptation of the Second Age, I kind of turned off my criticisms, at least in terms of viewing 'Rings of Power' as a faithful Tolkien show. It was just different, in a boring way. I'm a proponent of enjoying any form of content, as long as it's done justice. 'Rings of Power' simply did not do the Tolkien Estate justice, and it sucked. The cinematography was absolutely stunning at times, my favorite scene was the slow motion, low angle to a close up profile transition of Galadriel riding a horse and smiling like an idiot. It was just such a stupid and completely unnecessary scene to throw in there lmfao. If you wanted to show that Galadriel is at her happiest when riding, free in a field without a care in the world, there was a dozen different ways to go about that lmfao. Back to my thoughts, the show was just boring and left you feeling unfulfilled. Which was exactly the opposite of what Tolkien wanted you to feel when reading his books. He wanted you to dive into this gigantic and wonderful world, almost like you're part of the journey yourself. But I guess that's what happens when Amazon decided to jump into the show with only a blip of the story that they wanted to tell. This is both on Amazon and The Tolkien Estate, if the T.E feels like Amazon hadn't delivered a show worthy of Tolkien, they should have sold the rights to more than just the Appendices. It is what it is.

Bad movies take risks, rings of power was worse than a bad movie, it was a cynical movie. It was manufactured to be as dull as possible, stripping away any character or story since these are unpredictable elements. Instead it pumped the controllable elements; the aesthetics and marketing, up to 11. This way they guaranteed engagement. Rather than trying to make a good film they just pushed out a husk of a beloved work, it's desecrated name recognition, for cynical profit.

This is the same Fat Old Man that brought us Dexter Jexter's 50's style diner and episodes 1-3 where half the movie was people walking slowly and talking. Or sitting...and talking. Then massive CGI battles that didn't really mean shit. Then lightsaber battles. Only 1 of which was truly amazing.

I mean for a billion dollars its bad. The writing was terrible and a lot of the world building was lazy and lame. Like one elf accidentally lands on an island and literally begs to leave, yet these protects from people concerned elves will take their jobs. Its just a lazy like anti-populist take. I mean there was excessive complaining about a black elf but that was over blown. Although i think the actor was one of the best parts of it, i think its sometime that does seem a bit random and therefore a bit tokenish. Like why is there just one black elf in the area. It would have made more sense if they made all the elves in that region black, actually all the people in the village should have been non-white. Its something that would be very easy to explain lore wish ... its a southern and eastern region and we've never seen natives of the region of mordor before. But no its just randomly scattered none white characters. Like look at house of the dragon, people complained about black actors and then they watched it and liked them. The fact they were black added to the story and was believable- its house with foreign roots and interest in international trade, its diversity done well. Rings of power is just lazy

Skin tone is a major plot point in HOTD so it was not a side detail and they had to be accurate. Also, everyone is human. Skin tone does not matter in Tolkien and there are a lot non-humans so it's far less important. There's so much else that is non-sensical in ROP that there's no need to speculate on dwarf or hobbit genetics - if they even have genetics.
@baswar
@baswar 10 ай бұрын
@@gunkulator1 your missing my point. im not talking about the hobbits and dwarves, that i don't care about because as you say it never mentions it. I also don't even care their non-white its that it needs to feel like a living world. It needs to be consistent. The world doesn't look like California most regions one ethnicity dominates. If they have one black elf they should have all of his unit be black too. Like in HoD that whole family is black and that family is linked to international trade that makes it fit into the world. While in Tolkien people are generally described as similar to the peoples from their group. Rohim being blonde for example the way RoP did it was just lazy and just looks like tokenism. If they really cared they should have had not just more but more consistent non-white southern village like the humans and elves in the Southern village should have been non-white too
@gunkulator1
@gunkulator1 10 ай бұрын
@@baswar It's a fictional world and there's no reason at all it can't look like California other than you not wanting it to. Why should all elves in one group be black? Maybe elven genetics randomize skin tone, maybe they don't even have genetics, but a better question is: why do you care about this so much? Hobbits are described as having small, "nimble" feet, not big hairy ones but you never see people write angry screeds about Hobbit feet. Why is skin tone the hill you want to die on? Perhaps try seeing the actors as just actors, not black actors or white actors. Yes, our world still tends to have people who look like each other being together but this trend is lessening as the world grows closer. And besides, there's no reason we need to impose our current world situation on a fictional time and place. Different skin tones is really just mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.

EDIT: I listened and the discussion about what gets remembered and it was really interesting. It makes me think: people who love Tolkien's work do think that RoP was bad and still remember it. I give you this analogy: if a catholic person sees when someone walks into St. Peter's basilica in Rome and takes a shit on the altar while the pope is saying mass, you as a catholic will remember such an outrageous insult to something you consider holy. But if you aren't catholic, then that moment is one moment among the shocking moments of the year. But if you aren't then other shocking moments will overtake that, as it's just someone taking a shit. But as a catholic you will find such sacrilege memorable. I am coming back to this after a few months. If you guys had a cursory knowledge of the material that they had the licence to adapt, and the endresult, you would know that as an adaptation of Tolkien's work, this show was awful. I am not accepting contradictions on this point. In the appendices of the Lord of the Rings, which they have the rights to, there is enough material to understand what is going on in the second age, and a story where Sauron is gone for most of the second age does not take place in the book and it is a bafflingly stupid way to adapt the material. As a story it's pretty incoherent and boring, and built around the mystery box of "Where's Sauron, who is he, and what's his plan" instead of being an interesting coherent story about the Rings of Power, you know, the show's title. But it's pretty mediocre. The hobbit plot goes no where and it's an endless cycle of the phrases: "No adventures for us Hobbits" "What about me" "I said no." That's all there is to it. The visuals are really interesting and the beginning credits music plays in my head still, it's really great. Also, in spite of being cringe at times, the relationship of Elrond and Durin is very heartfelt and actually an interesting take on how Elves live so long they forget that they can miss an entire lifestage of another non immortal person. That was some clever writing to be sure. But mostly it is an incoherent mess, with an unlikable protagonist that cannot be saved.

You don’t need to make a strawman argument that it’s due to racism/sexism from the right for the reason the show is criticized. I actually really liked Ismael Cruz Cordova who played Arondir. It’s too bad they didn’t show his story more. I really don’t appreciate anyone trying to somehow use politics to somehow credit/blame the fandom.

If *you* don't like it because the story sucks that does not make you a grifter. Conservatives, by far, are the ones who complain about this specific topic. The grifters, on the other hand, who do espouse their political beliefs and are almost always right wing, occasionally have reasonable takes but I'm sure we can agree that the diversity, often time ridiculous, is not a major issue to hone in and sit on for a long time. An actual criticism of any media doesn't just focus on ONE issue when there are many others to focus on. Story sucked, characters were boring, music sucked, pacing was bad, cinematography was shite, etc etc....these guys focused, specifically, on the ethnicity of fictional characters. Come on now...

@@OfficialRedTeamReviewIf Tolkien was alive today he'd be a conservative and you'd probably not like him as a person... This definitely influenced his work but then you have propagandists coming in and changing the soul and spirit of middle earth with lines such as "the past is dead" and throwing in their own woke propaganda. Such as Galadriel and Numenor Queen needing to be a girl boss, or having a male elf named Ryan, which really means "Queen" in elven... so you tell me who really started this whole political side of the argument when RoP literally came out swinging in their superfans video talking about every single damn woke or progressive thing about the show.... ofc these Hollywood weirdos are gonna add their own politics to the show and conservatives will backlash, the actors themselves couldn't stop talking about gender or skin color... so the only grifter here is you...

@@OfficialRedTeamReview characterizing people who disagree with you on this topic as "right wingers" as though they are some evil tribal "other" makes you part of the problem. There are, in fact, legitimate reasons to have concerns about race swapping and real-world political ideologies being used to change historical works of fiction and it does not automatically make someone right-wing or racist. Those two words are so overused that they don't even mean anything anymore.

Apathy is worse than hate. RoP is in the apathy section. If anyone ever wants to mess with Tolkien canon, they better at least make it very entertaining (like in, the OG movie trilogy, Battle for Middle Earth 2 and Shadow of Mordor/War). RoP seems to have been made by people who hate the sources they have and try to "fix it" like with Witcher. There is also the saying "so bad it is good" but this does not fit RoP

The objection of black actors in this show was not due to racism. Tolkien, after all, described Harfoots as ‘brown of skin’ and the Southrons (Haradrim) were darker also. This made perfect sense, considering that the Harfoots were nomadic and lived outside, and the Southrons came from latitudes with more sunlight. That’s how you get darker skin, after all. What people objected to was casting decisions that were made solely for a social agenda (inclusivity) rather than to serve the story. A single black Elf makes no sense. Where did he come from? Is there an entire race of black elves that we don’t know about? How did they get dark skin when Elves were born under the starlight, and they are virtually immortal, meaning that their skin would not develop more melanin to protect them from the sunlight? Nor does it make sense for this adaptation to have occurred among dwarves, who lived most of their lives underground. Again, no sunlight. Sure, this is Fantasy, not science fiction, so it doesn’t have to be 100% scientifically accurate. However, Tolkien went to great pains to ground his fantasy into some realism as some realism grounds fantasy in the viewers (or readers) mind. And when the casting choices undermined this realism for purely social reasons, it is like breaking the fourth wall. It’s just bad storytelling, period. The characters might as well be holding up PETA signs. Middle earth should not be a canvas for you to broadcast your personal politics.

They could have made it work much more smoothly though, when you have a small Very insular group it makes sense that most of them would be recognisable, like the people of Rohan are different to the people of Gondor, they're all Human, but they are distinct. Disa was a good character by most accounts, but without a beard, was she really a dwarf? There were bearded dwarf ladies as extras, but not a main character, they could have done more with the numenorians without as much controversy as they're not as visually established as the elves or the dwarves or hobbits, but all of this is superficial, when the writing was mid at best and weak at worst, not even Bad, just forgettable. And Tokenism is still bigotry, I wouldn't want to get a job just because I'm disabled, to tick a box for someone else

@@PrestonJacobstheSweetrobin Ya'll are just as bad as the 'grifters' you complain about, a fan wanting a character to resemble how they look in the source material doesn't make them racist I saw someone upset Galadriel wasn't the right height she's supposed to be, ya'll gonna say he's heightest? What? I'm black, I like things being adapted to be AUTHENTIC and yes that includes visual aesthetics as well as character and story. People are allowed to be upset if a character or race in a story doesn't have the right skin tone just like they would be if they don't have the right hair colour or even eye colour. It doesn't automatically mean they are racist. Especially when you know the race swap casting decisions are done for just as much of a grift, if not more, as the people on youtube are complaining about it. For representation purposes put some work in, for Game of Thrones show the actual CULTURE, use summer islanders, show the actual characters who actually have to LIVE being black and are not just aesthetically black, that's not representation of us, that's just a white person created from an historically white perspective doing white european things but has darker skin, that does not represent black people, that represents a white person painted black. Tired of this lazy ass virtue signalling feigning as progressive representation, borderline ACTUALLY racist and ignorant. Black Panther is black representation, Blade an original black character is black representation, a black Hobbit that was created to be based on white British people that lives in medieval fantasy England is not. It takes me out of it just as much as a Game of Thrones character suddenly having a strong American accent, why is this concept so hard to comprehend is it because when black/minorities are involved its easier to throw racism accusations rather than addressing the genuine criticisms? I truly believe part of why a lot of these projects are failing recently is because Hollywood today is more concerned with how their projects are perceived politically than if they are telling a compelling, believable, immersive and interesting story that makes us think, instead their priority has become telling us what think and wanting to tick boxes that fit current day trends. Strong female character: check POC 50 to 60% representation without any rhyme or reason or effort: check LGBT representation without any rhyme or reason or effort: check in the 90's and 2000's It was cool to be edgy and rage against the machine, so most entertainment reflected that for better or worse today, it's to have a soap box and be political now, just without most of the talent or effort to make it work.
