It used TOR. Developed by the US military to encode messages. They made it free because if we were the only ones using it. It would be useless. You can go use Tor right now if you want.

he was insane, smart enough to accomplish all the technical stuff but crazy enough to not stop and think the gov wouldn't catch whoever was behind the Amazon for illegal drugs

I want to feel a little bad for this guy but like so many criminals who are driven by greed he didn't stop and likely never would have stopped. He would have kept going until the river of green dried up, he was arrested, or something happened to him.

Deep web came out in 2015. Also, as I recall from the couple of books iv read on this subject. The FBI supposedly got the IP of the server from a misconfigured Captcha on the SR server. Which i still think is code for, Operation PRISM was used to illegally get the server info.
