If it makes you feel any better, the girls being friends outside of the show isn't manufactured. You can go back numerous years on their social media profiles and they have pictures at their birthday parties and they show up for each other's work social events and have been since filming wrapped. Keiko Kitagawa even kept her Jewelry Star Bracelet as a memento after filming. They're genuinely friends in real life and that's beautiful ❤

I think the main reason Keiko Kitagawa wasn't available for the majority of the Special Act was because she also had to film her scenes for Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift. I could be wrong, but that's what I heard 🤔

I figured she had to have some kind of filming conflict. I'm not sure if it was Tokyo Drift, though. According to Wikipedia, principal photography for that film was during the second half of 2005, finishing up about a year after Special Act was released to DVD.

Here's my opinion no one asked for: The Special Act has some weird parts, but I like it. Especially the ending. The only thing I dislike is Mamoru's behavior. It kind of comes out of nowhere. Act Zero was weird, but pretty fun. And it's the only time we get to see Sailor V's awakening in a show (though it's very different from the manga). The Shitennou are hilarious in Kirari Super Live, I crack up every time!^^ Yeah, I also wonder why Nephrite's actor doesn't choose a different child. I don't know if you've watched any of the Sailor Moon musicals, but there's a show where they had quick change transformations (it's the Nogizaka version). It's very impressive. They usually use doubles to create the effect of a transformation.

Of course in the "regular" musicals, the girls have their wigs on even when not transformed, so that must save some time.

Oh man, I almost forgot about Hiroyuki Matsumoto (Nephrite) traumatizing a small child in the audience during KSL! He's clearly trying to "yes and" the situation as much as possible until he's relieved by Tuxedo Mask's entance. I have such 2nd hand embarrassment watching it & yet I enjoy it so much. I love his smile, something we dont get to see his character do in earnest but ONCE right before he dies 😭

I might be mistaken, as it was something i read around the time the special act was out, but the problem with sailor mars was that she literally broke her leg around the time production started, so they rewrote her parts and she's only waist up

Having attended my fair share of Power Rangers conventions I can say that the phenomenon of a season’s cast staying extremely tight after they wrap is a fairly common occurrence. Especially for the seasons where they hire primarily American actors and then ship them all off to New Zealand for several months to film. But even the whole extended Zordon era cast were generally pretty close, even between cast changes (with a couple of ego clashes of course)

On the Super Sentai / Kamen Rider side a lot of casts do describe there time as hurricane like but in reality are just highly scheduled and stage shows are part of it so PGSM probably had that to lean on, similarly a good portion of shows' cast do become friends in real life so PGSM feels like it would be similar situation.

But I'm divided about the second season because I really like the Black Moon clan and Black Lady as villains (perhaps more conceptually than what they actually do). But in the Dream Arc, I can't defend anything. The villains are terrible and I'll never understand how Naoko Takeuchi thought it was a good idea to use an entire season for Chibiusa to fall in love with a horse ! 😅

One change I would make to the special act of PGSM, give Ami a better choice at careers. She chose a stereotypical path. Ami Mizuno, with your looks and smarts, you could have gotten any great career, but NO! You chose the Japanese stereotypical choice to be a doctor rather than forging your own path. PS. I would have loved for Ami to be a games programmer and an E-Sports star!
