Was lucky enough to seem them live last night, and I am still in reeling from how much power she held in her voice in spite of her age. The musicians were all amazing and could have stolen the show had it been any other singer. Thank you for the great reaction, I'm glad you checked them out!

I've been asking people to react to Savage Rose forever - Annisette, the singer is amazing. She's still going strong today 75 years singing barefoot and dancing, a true wild child. They were offered several big record deals in the US around 1970, but turned it down because they didn't want to sing for the soldiers (which was a part of the package) being very political aware and anti-war. Thank you for the reaction - other great songs: "A girl I knew", "Dear little mother" and "What do you do now".

When I was just a boy of 13-14, Savage Rose also reached my small town in western Denmark on a turnement. I had heard them before so I har to se them, I just loved there music from now on.

Wonderful! Such a unique haunting sound. 1973, huh? Never heard of them, what a find! The belting ballad aspect of it reminds me of something like Shirley Bassey from the same period, but the instrumentation is more rock, almost Procol Harum like, but fatter. And the drumming - outstanding! I wonder what the rest of it is like. Thanks again JP for a fun surprise.

Thanks for the nice reaction, Justin; it was a wonderful surprise :-) I heard them on the radio in the early 70-ies, and was instantly hooked. They may not be everyones taste though.

I love this band incl Annisette Koppel. Followed them since start. Next month they will have a concert Tour in Denmark. The Singer Annisette is now 75YO! What an amazing life ❤️ 🇩🇰Erik

Another great hidden gem (to me at least). I would have been all of 12-years old at the time, and wasn't hearing this band in my neck of the woods. Always a good day when hearing good new music, whether it is 50-years old or brand new. Great upload.

Annisette Hansen (later married bandmate Thomas Koppel) from Savage Rose is awesome, however an acquired taste. The band hits nicely too. I discovered them in the early 2000's. I love their late sixties to mid seventies output. Their 1971 album Your Daily Gift comes to mind. Definitely choose some of their songs to check out.

The main reason no one outside Scandinavia have ever heard about Savage Rose is because they refused to go to Vietnam to perform for the GI's. They had landed a good contract in the US for some recordings and performances, but at the last minute the label placed a clause that they had to go to Vietnam first. All the members of the band were political active in the anti war movement back then, so naturally the reclined, at the cost of never getting a contract outside Scandinavia. All the musicians are trained in classic music and jazz at the musical university, except Anisette who's just a natural talent. Most of the band members has passed away, but Anisette still gives occasional performances and still has the voice to do so, at the age of 75.

I heard them first on radio some late 60s. And it took me years until I could find out which song I had heard. I think I have one or two albums. One of few Danish groups who reached me in Sweden(!) From the early albums I prefer "A girl I knew" from the first album and "Ride my mountain" from the second. I know they changed style several times. I should check! Today it is so much easier.

😁👌🇩🇰 One of the last of the old danish bands from the 60’s. Savage Rose was pretty low in peoples mind during the 80’s and 90’s untill ‘95 when they made the album “Black Angel”, their first english album since “Wild Child” from 73. Black Angel featured Mick Taylor of former Rolling Stones fame on guitar.

Thomas and Anders Koppel were brothers and started the band 1968. Annisette hansen joined as singer and later married Thomas. Thomas passed away 2006. Annisette is still singing.

The only song I've heard from this band until now was The Castle, which appeared on the 1970 Polydor sampler Supergroups. It contained some pretty decent stuff: John Mayall, Taste, Ashton Gardner & Dyke, Jack Bruce, Tony Williams Lifetime. I wasn't impressed by The Castle, and this track hasn't done much to make me want to explore the rest of the band's material.

I find this kind of heavy vibrato singing hard to listen to at the best of times, but god it's a slog to wade through that many choruses of it, all with the Drama turned up to 11. Might have worked better if that chorus had been a single non-repeating middle-eight to bring the track to an emotional peak. I sat through it to be polite, but I wouldn't do it twice.

Why do I feel like I've heaed this lady sing a few movie themes? (James Bond?). That vibrato puts me off, other than that the band was O.K., But not for me. Peace and Love.

Only one recommendation, shocker! :) Mundanity musicalised. Too long, repetitive, and predictable for me. Cabaret music with vocals by a pub singer. How do you know it's a pub singer I hear you ask... overt vibrato, always a dead giveaway. In case you'd not guessed, not a fan.

I agree. For those who really like vibrato, I suggest Mrs Miller's 'rendition' of A Lover's Concerto. It's so awful, it's hilarious. @@jaybird4093

You are absolutely right. Annisette did indeed perform at Joe's Pub, New York. She also performed at Newport Jazz Festival in 1969 alongside James Brown and Sly and The Family Stone. She received rave reviews from Lester Bangs, Ed Wards and David Fricke of Rolling Stone. In case you did not guess.... huge fan
