I bought this based on your overview. While I don't think Red Nails reproduces well on the slick paper (and reduced size), the rest of the material looks amazing. My first exposure to Conan lore was seeing the 1980's film with Arnold Schwarzenegger as a kid with my dad. From there I gravitated to DC's Warlord comics and damn near any other sword and sandal fiction along with studying REAL ancient and medieval history. So seeing these books from my child hood brought back to life in a composite format? Kinda brings a thimble of joy to my old heart.

Omar, thanks for this review and thanks to Near Mint for all of the fun C2E2 interviews. Tracking indicates that my copy of this tome (with the Boris Vallejo cover) and Avengers volume 4 (with the Neal Adams cover) from IST won't arrive until Thursday. It's a weird coincidence that two omnibuses come out on the same day with so much prime Roy Thomas scripting (and of course, lovely art). I am very pleased that Marvel is printing all of the contents of each issue, including the articles. Savage Tales was originally conceived as a mature anthology series, featuring Conan. The first issue, which was very unique for Marvel format wise (even though they had published the magazine format Spectacular Spider-Man and Monsters to Laugh With previously). The first issue of Savage Tales got very sporadic distribution and was seen as a failure. The relaunch of Savage Tales was a couple of years later and much more successful. As Kavin Kumar says below, "The Frost Giant's Daughter" was also reprinted in the regular comic book, with the nudity and violence tamped down and color added. It's also in the recent, first Conan the Barbarian omnibus. Barry Windsor - Smith killed himself to meet the deadlines for a monthly book, and fill-in artists and reprints were sometimes necessary. When the tale was reprinted in Savage Sword of Conan, three or four years later, it was in its original format and the first opportunity for a lot of readers to see it. I enjoy the black and white magazines from that era, and I think most of the artists were thrilled to be working in black and white, with slightly more mature subject matter.

My copy is taking forever to get to me from IST. Not sure what the holdup is. I may only pickup volume one for these B&W collections as I already have most of the DH TPB's for the SSOC magazines and I don't mind reading from those editions. Just had to have the 1st volume so it's in my collection. I also have many of the CTB trades but since the colors were reformatted I may continue picking the CTB Omnis as they come out. Just love the editorials from Roy Thomas and the wonderful table of contents (in both Omnis) as well as the letter pages and such. I'm a glutton to read all that stuff and still find it interesting.

@NMC/ To, Uncanny Omar: The artist name you were wondering about, at mid point of the Omnibus, was Esteban Maroto. Born 1942, in Madrid, Spain. Maroto joined Warren Publishing in November 1971 when artists from the Spanish agency Selecciones Illustrada started appearing in their three horror magazines, Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella. Maroto's first story, "Wolfhunt", appeared in Vampirella #14. He would eventually draw 101 stories for them, more than any other artist except Jose Ortiz. Maroto won the Warren Award for best artist/writer in 1972, and his story "A Scream in the Forest" won the best art in a story award in 1973. Maroto remained with Warren until its folding in 1983. Along the way, Mr. Maroto did freelance work for Marvel Comics line of mature B&W Magazines. Including, The Savage Sword of Conan, and Unknown Worlds, which was mostly a SciFi Mag. As comics entered the 1980’s, Mr. Maroto also took on a Freelance work for DC Comics titles such as: Amethyst ( a childhood favorite), Zatanna, and The Atlantis Chronicles. Since you are a Historian of comics yourself, and a big fan of certain writers, it may interest you to know that The Atlantis Chronicles was written by a young, up and coming Writer by the name of ‘Peter David’. The Atlantis Chronicles, was a 7-issue miniseries published by DC Comics, from March 1990 through September 1990. Last, towards the last third of this Omnibus, as you flipped through it, the Artists you stopped to admire and comment on, was Penciler: John Buscema, Inker: Ernie Chua, who wouldlater use the last name of ‘Chan’, throughout the remainder of his American comic book work, as he was a native Filipino Artist, of highest caliber. Fact: The Filipino School of Comic Book Artists that we’re employed by Warren Magazines, then DC Comics, then Marvel Comics, in that order - were great draughtsmen, who were exceedingly versatile, they could Pencil, Ink, Letter, and Paint. So of course, they were paid less than American Artists (notoriously so by the Editors at the DC Comics of the time), yet - they spearheaded a movement towards a more ‘realistic’ detailed style of art, than what the aged comic artists under contract, especially at DC Comics, we’re capable off. Imagine the difference between someone who Pencils counter lines for a coloring book of those years, and the detailed work Penciled by someone like George Pérez, or a Chris Burnham. - Thank You. (Ps) Towards the end of the Omni, some of the pages Pencilled by John Buscema, were also Inked by Alfredo Alcala, and some PinUps by Nestor Redondo. Both Master Pencilers in their own right. Simply...exquisite...beautiful artwork.

I bought Savage Sword of Conan, Savage Tales, and Epic Illustrated at the 7-11 back in the day. Such great magazines from marvel. That $100+ price tag is a bit shocking. How does this book compare to the Dark Horse "phone book" SSoC Omnibuses ?

The phone book volumes are basically what you'd expect - printed on cheaper newspaper quality and also do not contain color covers or content aside from the front and back of the books. They also only contain the Conan stories, none of the additional stories and essays that were originally printed in the magazines. The pages are also not magazine size, obviously.

Just to let you know about that "In Memoriam" page: Howard committed suicide at the age of 30 back in 1936, so that page wasn't printed because he had JUST died it was just in his memory. I ordered the DM cover for this Omni because I like it more but I, like you, ordered the Arthur Adams cover for the latest Avengers Omni (because I'm an Arthur Adams fanboy). Serious question! What is the difference between the Savage Sword of Conan and the Marvel Conan stories? I heard Savage Sword is the best of the comic runs (alongside Dark Horse’s Conan) and I’ve also heard that Marvel Conan actually repeats some stories found in Savage Sword. Could you go tell me exactly which omnibus is worth it or if both should be collected because they’re different stories. Thanks!

Most of the art work is by Buscema but with different inkers. Alfredo Alcala, Ernie Chan and Rudy Nebres were the primary inkers. They had a knack for making the art look more like their own John`s.

Agreed. I personally thought they improved Buscema`s art. Buscema`s Conan was a radical departure from Windsor-Smith`s. After he took over the color comic I pretty much stuck to Savage Sword because I enjoyed the inker`s petty much redrawing his work.@@NearMintCondition

Keep this in mind to help you decide. Savage Sword is more adultish and in black and white. Conan the Barbarian is all in color but has to keep it to a Teen level of writing and art. I would honestly go for Conan the Barbarian the Marvel Years! That's what I would choose.

Apparently Marvel has already reprinted some of these stories in color on more than one occasion. The first and probably the best being the Marvel Treasury Editions. I'm about to snag #4, which reprints Red Nails, one of my favorite Conan stories. It's a shame I have to buy a relatively expensive 40 year-old book when Marvel could just color these with modern techniques in a much nicer package. They're leaving money on the table. Maybe these Savage books are selling well enough as it is even in b & w, but I have a feeling they would sell even more if they colored them and made a big splash about it.

I like that it's in black and white, since the coloring of old comics was very flat compared to todays standards, especially when reprinted on glossy paper. I always found the artwork in those books gorgeous. It's just a shame they felt the need to censor some of the stories. That kinda defeats the purpose of separating the savage sword from the ongoing Conan comic book.

@@NearMintCondition I haven't read it, but When you flipped through the pages of "hordes of the veiled one" Princess Yasmela is clothed. I have that issue from back in the day. In my version she is completely naked in the first 2 or 3 pages, that is fully frontal 70's bush and all. There's a reason it was in black and white, lol. It makes me wonder what else they've censored.

Probably going to pass on this one even though that black and white art looks stunning and I want it. I just can't afford to get this and the regular Marvel Conan omnibuses. By the way, completely unrelated to this video other than it involves an omni, but was at my comic shop today picking up my weekly books and noticed they had the New X-Men Omnibus by Grant Morrison but it had no price on it. I asked how much and he said 65 bucks and I said, SOLD!

@@NicCollinsFilms Dark Horse released 22 volumes of softcover omnis that collect only the Conan stories of Savage Sword before they lost the licenses. Those are out of print as well, so you'll have to track them down from resellers.

Excellent look through Omar (the titty tangent made me smile), Mine's arriving tomorrow. I was going to go with the variant cover but when I went to order from IST they still had the DM available so I pulled the trigger on the DM (it's my first DM). I love the black and white art to that of original colored art from that time period unless it's been recolored. Absolute Sandman, WS The Mighty Thor come to mind. So I would say I'm a fan of recoloring when done right what do the rest of you think. B/W, original coloring or recoloring.

From my understanding the reason its black and white is because it was too bloody for color. So marvel had to make it black and white and made it for the adult. But I was reading this when I was 10. The comics were too tame for me

@@NearMintCondition Also Marvel is now publishing the epic collection of Conan, basically it collects all the Dark Horse Comic runs from 2004 - 2017, so anyone who does not want to pay big bucks to collectors can get this. Maybe you already have a video on that

The omnibus is a rip off. Marvel advertised it as including ALL the material in each issue but it only includes the featured Conan story in most cases. What they don't include is the great secondary stories (Kull, Bran Mac Morn, Solomon Kane, Cormac Mac Art, Red Sonja, etc) and the portfolios, etc. I grew up reading Savage Sword and could have easily purchased the issues I'm missing (2-29) from my collection for the same price as the first omnibus. Marvel was too CHEAP to purchase the rights to the other material.
