Hamlin is now trying to get Congress to pass a law requiring every school to be equipped with defibrillators, not only for the school but at all athletic events/practices. While it hasn’t made it through Congress yet- Ohio just had this signed into law this past week. This would not have happened had it not been for Hamlin

He did not have a heart attack… He had Cardiac Arrest from something called Commotio Cordis. “Commotio cordis is a rare, life-threatening condition that occurs when a hard object hits the chest directly over the heart at a specific moment during a heartbeat, causing an abnormal heart rhythm and sudden cardiac arrest.” More on Commotio Cordis - “Commotio cordis is often caused by a low-velocity blow to the chest, such as from a ball or tackle during sports, or from being hit hard by another player's body part. The blow must occur during a very narrow time window, between 20 and 40 milliseconds, when the heart's electricity is flowing from top to bottom. It also can't be too hard or too soft, as a very intense blow can bruise the heart, while a less-intense blow can still trigger the condition.”

Detroit Lion's player Chuck Hughes had a massive coronary, and died on the football in October of 1971. I saw that game when I was 10 years old, everyone was saying Dick Butkus hit him, he didn't. What happen to Hamlin was bad, but ask Sharon Hughes which was scarier, Chuck never came home. Chuck is still the only NFL player to die on the field.

He did not have a heart attack. He got hit in the chest during the upswing of his heart resetting itself for another beat. He was lucky that the medical jumped in instantly. The chest pads must have failed or were faulty either way the league did a massive safety inspection over everything just as a double check. The resetting of heart happens a lot and karate students have died like that from simple demo kicks. All people can do is wear armor and control themselves.

The video you guys reacted to was good until they said that he had a heart attack, that's NOT what happened. He had CARDIAC ARREST from a condition known as "Commotio Cordis," which is an extremely rare even that can happen if you receive a forceful blow, but timing has to be perfect down to fractions of a millisecond for it to occur. I recommend you guys look up more about his situation online if you want to know more about it.
@beardown39203 ай бұрын
The actual injury was cardiac arrest. It can actually happen to anyone st any time. Getting hit in the chest at the exact right time when your heart beat is st sn exact place causes it. It is EXTREMELY rare for this situation to occur but apparently all humans can be susceptible to it. Very freak incident. I cant imagine how he felt the first time he was hit following his return to football. Shows the bravery these guys have when they strap on their helmets and pads every day.

That was a crazy day. There is only 1 game every Monday night during the NFL season typically so it usually has the highest number of viewers. The entire country was staring at their TVs wondering what was going on but understanding it was horrific. The length of time it took on the field was never seen before. In a football game. Watching all the players crying and freaking out on the field kind of let everyone know how bad things were. They are VERY used to seeing teammates down with injury and even go in ambulances from the field occasionally but never seen COR administered for 10 minutes. Scariest thing I e ever seen happen in a football game. Glad you guys did this video.

NFL handled this one better than they did Chuck Hughes. The doctors actions, and the Bills' coach taking his team off the field is probably why it was handled better. Hughes died on October 24, 1971 with 1:02 left in the game. Hughes was filling in for Larry Walton due to injury. Hughes had caught a 37 yard pass for a 1st down and was tackled by Bears' defenders Bob Jeter and Gary Lyle. It was Hughes' only catch of the day, and the last of his life. 3 plays later when returning to the huddle after an incomplete pass, he fell to the ground. Doctors could not revive him. The game was played to completion.

@thseed73 ай бұрын
Damar's Cardiac Arrest was caused by Commotio Cordis. Taking a hit to the chest at the exact time in a heartbeat disrupts the heart's rhythm and causes it to stop. Crazy, freak accident on a pretty innocuous play. As a Chiefs fan, I was watching this game because it affected playoff seeding, was two of the best teams in the league and a featured night game. All of us didn't care about the game or results anymore and it was only about Damar and the players on the field. I think the NFL pushed for a restart, but the incredible Coaches protected their teams and did the honorable thing by refusing to continue. Even as a rival in the division, we all had nothing but respect for the Bengals and Bills in that moment. I'm really happy Damar came back, I was incredibly happy to donate to his choice of charity and I hope he can continue his playing career for years to come.
