Omg that's terrifying!! D:> I definitely think it's to check how often someone's at home so people can case the house for breaking in because it honestly isn't that uncommon anymore. There are neighborhood notices every now and then in Japanese to be careful about break-ins. It's one of the big reasons apartments on higher floors are more expensive, because they're safer. And it's also why a lot of Japanese people will try to convince you not to live on the first floor if you're a woman. The first time I stayed in Japan it was for three months barely a block away from Jun's parents, in an apartment on the first floor, and they were super freaked out by it lol. A quick google search in Japanese shows a few pages on people experiencing the same thing. If you google "玄関ドアにテープ…不在確認し空き巣 大阪などで300件か" there's a news article about some dude doing that 300 times in Osaka to steal stuff. He got arrested at least... but yeah, break-ins.

Very famous fact if you’re living in Japan especially if you’re a female. Also never leave a schedule of your work etc around the house, that’s what they are also looking for. my flight attendant friend actually came home and found a guy living/sleeping there when she was out of town. She had her schedule on her fridge

@Lettucethink7 жыл бұрын
Cameras won't protect you but with a little ingenuity, that could change. I would love a smart home system that tied encrypted, password-protected camera access to a smart watch, at least within Wi-Fi range. Being able to see past the front door before you enter it, or around a hallway corner with night-vision on a dark and uncertain night, would probably alleviate so much stress and save lives too.
@PurpleSwils7 жыл бұрын
yeah, my family had some around the house and although it wouldn't prevent a theft, we had a phone app that would let us see the cameras so I always checked them before I arrived home just to be safe... so creepy though, I know that feeling.

I wonder if it was a fan of your channel, who wanted to confirm if that was your house, by sticking that tape (at a pretty noticeable hight on the door). They would get a confirmation by your post on youtube like this, or on twitter, instagram etc that says you found this creepy tape on my door wtf!! I say this because there was a Japanese youtuber 'pinky kid/oddeye', whose house got confirmed by fan, with a trick kind of like this. Someone called a delivery call-girl (a prostitute) to pinky kids house. Pinky turned the girl away, but he later posted on twitter that some asshole called a prostitute to his house, ranting, pleading angrily don't do this. Well, it was a set up. And who ever arranged for the delivery, now knew it was legit Pinky's house & later on posted pinky's address on the web for all to see. I think it was smart of you not to say anything about it, until you had left that house.

Freaky!! When I lived in Japan I was followed home from work by a young man. There were no other people around since it was in a small neighborhood past 10pm. At first I thought he was just trying to pass me because he was walking from behind me so quickly, but as soon as he got next to me he slowed down and started walking shoulder to shoulder with me to the point that he was veering me into the wall beside me. He never attempted to talk or make eye contact so I was so confused. I stopped suddenly and he hesitated but then he continued walking. I pretended like I was on my phone and waited, but when he crossed the street he stopped and waited. Luckily, A woman came up around the corner with her groceries so I walked as close to her as possible to try to deter him. We passed him together, and started climbing the 50+ stairs up the hill. At the top, she turned to go a different direction from me, I heard him literally start running up the stairs behind me. My apartment was super close to the top of the stairs so as soon as I got to the top I ran inside (luckily my building required a key for the main entrance) and i had just enough time to get in. I ran upstairs to my apartment, kept all the lights off, and peeked out the window to see him pacing outside looking up at all the windows, I'm assuming to try to figure which lights turned on so he knew which one was mine. After a few minutes he finally left. I told my boss the next day and my company put me in a new (and nicer!) apartment the next week. Despite this, I still think Japan is one of the safest countries in the world ahaha. I never had any other problems or even an inkling of fear at any time of day or night after that freak incident.

I’m really glad you’re going to keep doing your own editing and content creating, too many youtubers get big and just hire a bunch of other people to do everything for them and it really loses its appeal. Zoella is one of them, I used to love her but this last year she seems more of a figure head and less of a creator and it just feels flat. No heart in it. Keep on doing the crazy stuff you do Tay Tay!!
@kaitlynward71317 жыл бұрын
But thats just it, she's not doing a lot of the same material. Take her book club, I loved the Zoella book club, in the past she would hand pick 6 books and do a full video review of them. It really got a lot of girls reading and talking about books but this year she had other authors pick the books, she did a short description in a vlog not a stand alone video, and she hadn't even read all the books when it was released! Even in her xmas product launch video she went in not knowing what the products looked like, it was all her team who did everything. I get she's been busy with the move, but this is suppose to be her job, where's the pride in having other people do everything for you and just putting your name on it?

In England there is a similar tactic to the tape, basically thieves will leave a certain shape or sequence of carvings on peoples properties to indicate if the homeowners are rich or poor, if the tenant is vulnerable or not, if the owner is in or not, if they have pets, if they have been burgled before, if the owner have an alarm or if they are a good target etc. Not gunna lie it’s pretty scary.

That’s a really common method robbers use to check if someone in living in a building, when they leave/come home, and how often. It’s something I heard about a lot when I was living in Los Angeles, but I haven’t encountered anything about it here in the Pacific Northwest. I’m really thankful that whatever it was about, you were not robbed, and were obviously safe. I would think that living in some place like Hong Kong, an apartment building would be more ideal, anyway, because of how packed together it is? I don’t know too much about the layout and distribution of buildings in Hong Kong, but everything I’ve ever seen has looked like all the buildings are packed together very densely. No matter what, I hope you just find your new home quickly! ^.^
@kamin5707 жыл бұрын
In Germany they leave markings on the gate, the house, the door or the street to signal if there are pets, if someone is home, how many people live there and what kind of people live there. Sometimes even warnings for other thiefs, for example if there is a big broad man in the house or a big scary dog. Sometimes the police gives out warnings and says to call them if you notice strange signs somewhere, that you can't explain.

Yeah that's definitely a case of someone marking your house to break in later. Well Rachel is right I also googled and so many articles came up about people getting the clear tape on the front door in japan. It seems to be a common way to check how often people are in the house in japan now. Although it's not only used by those ppl who are looking for houses to break in or the stalkers but also by the house owners to make sure they get to paid the rent or ppl that comes to the house trying to sell some stuff at the door. I've been living in japan for over 20 years and never experienced any criminal case or anything but your story remains me to be careful always even in the countries that is claimed to be safe. My house got burgled when I was away on holiday and they ruined and stole all of my things and left the back door wide open and my bedroom window wide open. I learnt that when people burgle you they mess with things on the outside e.g., throw your mail on the ground or turn off the power via you outdoor power box so they can see if someone is home depending on whether or not they pick up the mess or fix it. So it definitely sounds like they were simply trying to burgle you! Apartments are definitely more safe because there is often only one entry way to an apartment, thus less ways to get in and out xx

Seems like the tape placed on the door is definitely a sign of a thief checking to see if the house is empty. It's also not the only way they check. Sometimes they will leave things outside your house like cans, stones, string tied to the fence, bags, and so on. Whatever you do, do not ignore them. It may not look obvious at first, or it looks like random litter but it could be put there by scouts for criminals targeting a house or neighborhood. They may also check opened mailboxes to see if it's full to tell if the people are away or not.

Hey Taylor! I have done a quick research about that tape thing. Apperantly burglars put a piece of tape on your door or window. If they return and see the tape is gone, then they know you’re home. But if the tape is still there when they return, they’ll assume you’re not home and see that as an opportunity to break in. That could explain why it is not placed in a hidden spot, because they want you to find it and react. Take care and stay save

Once I saw (at night) right next to my airbnb , a guy who was wearing a suit (probably finished his work), standing under the street light I dont know from when and then a young girl like in early 20s walked pass by and he grabbed her and hugged her. And the girl was like just looking down and not responding , very quiet and trying to just go her way. At first I thought ' oh that couple, they must be fighting' And the girl seemed mad to me at first but something kept bothering me kinda shady. Since I myself had experienced hentai's in Japan while traveling (even 2times a day) later I thought maybe that guy was some stalker who tried to do something with that girl. Very shady whenever I think of it. Careful girls going to Japan unless youre like a really tall sporty type!

I don't want to scary even more but in the USA that could be considered a sign of human trafficking. There was a News article about a girl leaving work and someone put a sweater on her car to target her so they can kidnap so while she was distracted taking off the sweater have her windshield someone could go behind her and grabbed her and that will be that. But she was a smart girl she knew that there were incidents like that happening around where she was living so she just locked herself inside her car and called for help.

Thieves are even trolling social media sites like Instagram and Twitter, searching to see who's on vacation or information revealing people’s travel plans or in this case your bf's?

The only logical (and not scary) thing i can think of is someone leaving a note and then changing their mind so they took the note and left the tape.

If they took a note off from the tape it would've been loosened and not so prominently there
@enviivne7 жыл бұрын
Indiamadisonn I think they just tore it off (the tape bit that was attached to the note). But who knows🤔🤔🤔
@enviivne7 жыл бұрын
That was me trying to come up with a logical and not so dangerous possibility... But honestly, i think robbers really. It was just a way to gauge if the renters are out of the country.

Some organized crime groups use these kind of signs (like scratches or letters on the door or the mailbox) to communicate with each other. This is how they show which houses are "interesting" or easy. You could leave your webcam with the sensor movement activated to record anything suspicious. Although maybe it was just a prank (as you said, the position on the door was too obvious). I'm glad you moved anyways. 気をつけて下さい

Such a scary story! I checked it online it is someone try to confirm if anybody lives in the house or not ‘cause they tried to break in . You really should call the police right way. I’m glad you moved after that.

I read in an article that burglars put the tape there to tell if you've been home or not. If they see the tape is gone, they know you're home. They were probably hoping you'd be on vacation or not home for several hours so they could rob you and not get caught. So, they want you to notice it or remove it in some way so that they can tell.

What if they checking if you moved out of your house yet ? Like someone who knew you moving out and are interested in the place ?

Ok, so these are really happening? Once my friend, who was into Japanese culture and movies, was watching some Japanese movie about a couple who was living in houses in which owners leave for vocation or so. The way they know that nobody is living there they glue ads on their door exactly how there was tape on yours. If owners comes back, then they see that ad was taken off or ripped in half and they don't bother getting in and looks for another option. I was trying to look for the movie or to remember the name but it was ages ago. So i think just some people wanted to make a cosy nest in your place. I am glad all was fine ^^

A really scary experience Tay. Now that you're planning on moving to a house you should put cameras and security alarms. You spend days alone when Elbow is traveling and a young (beautiful) girl alone is an easy prey sometimes. Be safe. Love you. Regards from Perú ❤️

the creepiest thing that happened to me was when I was shopping alone and I decided to stop by MCdonalds to eat. since I was alone I went to the 2nd floor where there is tables for 1 persone with like walls around (idk how to explain but it's like in the ramen restaurant where you can eat alone). I was eating and like a few minutes after I guy came up to me and started to speak to me in mostly japanese bc he didnt know english. Since I was at this kind of table, from the entrance the only thing we could see of me was my shoes so he really had to know what I was wearing. I am not that good in japanese (i only studied 1 year) so we had difficulties communicating but he just kept asking questions like where I was from, why I am here, if I have a boyfriend... and even when I said i had a boyfriend (that was not the case but I just wanted him to go) he kept asking me if I wanted another boyfriend here in Japan and stuff like that. it was very annoying but also creepy but after a while of me saying I didn't want a boyfriend he just left without saying anything lol Also another time with a friend we were shopping and a guy just started taking pictures of us... we were both wearing jeans and a coat since it was cold outside so we were pretty confused it's not like he was trying to take pictures of under skirts or anything but still he was quite older than us so it was creepy af.

I know how you felt.. on May some people broke into our house and it was awful I didn't care about the stuff they stole I was just thankful that we weren't in the house when it happened but I was paranoid for the next two months.. The worst thing that they steal from you is the sense of security we have in our houses.. When someone breaks in your house you just feel that there is no safe place anymore. We left the house for a month and a half and the went back but it so frustrating.. I was so paranoid

Hello! I agree that maybe someone was probably observing when you were entering your house. Quick story I used to live alone in a small building apartment in korea. I always felt like someone was coming into my house (landlord etc scary story but won’t get into that detail) so before I left to work or wherever, I would put A little small piece of paper at the very bottom of the door between the gap to check if it was in the same place when I came back. (So if someone opened my door the little paper would fall) Keep this in mind! It could also save your life from intruders or at least to let you know if someone has been in and out of your house if you’re ever feeling a little unsafe. (There are some cases were people have been found living in people’s homes for year and owners don’t find out till long later.) I’m not sure what intentions that person had in your case but I’m sure you were being observed maybe even stalked?

Did you tell your boyfriend what happened when he was away for work? What was his reaction? Did he want to come home ASAP to make sure you were safe?
@MyuNeptune7 жыл бұрын
That man at the cafe. XD Adorable reaction ahahah! I moved to USA and i live atm i'm pretty bad area... So I'm scared of any noise since windows are super low in those houses and to break in? The door probably could open if you put enough pressure . Not to mention people have guns so it gets extra scary.

The Japan tape thing is so scary! Have you considered buying a Nest camera or the Ring doorbell? They have a cloud/app video service that you can use to view and record motion activated footage... I’m not sure if they’re widely available in HK, but having video surveillance may give you guys some peace of mind!

Oh my Sweetie. Why did you touch it back then?! If it ever happens again Pease, don't. Won't the police need to check for fingerprints on the tape? 🙁. That's why you shouldn't touch , if your concerned, call police, my Love! Scary story. The doll story one was funny. Teaches that person a lesson!! I agree building living is safer. Blessings! W💕

Never heard about the tape before, not sure if it happens where I live, but I have heard of something similar looking for dogs. Except the marking where I live was something being tossed in the backyard or some type of marking on the fence, like a ribbon or chipping off a piece of the fence. So yeah, you were right to call someone to stay with you - for sure!
