The thing is, though, the people who can't do that also need accommodation, because it's not okay for them to be shut out of ALL fitness just because they can't keep up with particular exercises (because if that person is shut out of fitness altogether, well, they don't get fit). Those exercises could be part of it, sure, but also more adaptive techniques might help. Things like workout modifications for those who can't do the regular exercises (a guy named Antranik developed a few one could start with, and there's also equipment to aid in those modifications if the other ones don't work for you). Or something like - using a rock wall for the climbing portion (again, for those who can climb at all) because with that you can use your legs as an assist in areas where you may not have the upper body strength to do it with just your arms. Same with a rope climb to some extent. Then again, that climbing machine they use could also come with assist machinery for those who needed it (sort of a belay machine where someone can spot you) - like to take just enough weight off so you can do the thing, then the machine is set to give less of a weight assist as you get stronger, and eventually you progress to not needing that lift machine at all. A steppingstone, if you will. Heck, gymnastics teachers use steppingstones like that all the time, and look how fit their students are. Steppingstones aren't a sign that you aren't good enough. They are a way to help you get where you need or want to go.

This to me looks like its beyond recognition of the importance of physical fitness. To me it seems like an era where the US government had motivation from the top to invest in schools and the youth of the nation. Something I feel that has sadly been lost over time. Can't really blame kids for having terrible food in school or living in communities that barely have gymnasiums. This isn't even to mention what else was going on in the 60s for a lot of kids you won't really see in videos like this or in schools like this.

Yes. Sadly, things seem to usually go downhill and get worse with physical fitness over time--unless there is a national emergency that "demands" physical fitness.

This is the late 60's. You had a lot of faculty who grew up before WW2. California had a much smaller population then and was much more agricultural. So a lot of the older generation probably grew up on farms and ranches. They knew what hard work was and probably didn't need a PE class to get into shape.

This is a calisthenics routine that had to be done briskly. You cannot do pistol squats briskly, plus, there were general conditioning exercises for the average person. The squat thrusts they did plus getting in and out of push ups were leg driven. -Ron Jones, MS

Many reasons, but the district changed boundary lines in early 1980s which required them to close one high school. They chose LaSierra to close despite heavy protests largely in support of not shutting LaSierra due to its amazing PE program. The country also got more liberal and more lazy which shut down other good PE programs.

@@TheLeanBerets I wish we knew the people involved. In Britain Peter hitches has wrote a book about the grammar schools and there removal. This documents how it was done and essentially it has been done to remove the threat to the elite changing its purely evil and control of power. Which values short term goals over long term strength and growth of the nation. For without a future competent elites the society will collapse.

@@TheLeanBerets of course, and I think we're on the same page - which is why I suspected they had an easier time back then. I'm female, and between the ages of 3-10yo, you would most likely find me up a tree, or on a roof. After that, I rode my bike EVERYWHERE. As, I got older and was expected to sit for a longer periods of time, anxiety well and truly kicked in. Between running about to relieve it, and studying, it was very difficult to find time for anything or anyone else - which also created guilt because it was incredibly difficult for me to break from physical activity, causing people to assume I was selfish. It's also meant that at times I have also neglected my own children's need for physical activity because they can't walk far enough, run fast enough, climb high enough etc so I go off without them. I can manage my ADHD alone - it's when other people enter the picture that it becomes a struggle. Hope that makes sense...

If I was super thin it might have felt better to go skins otherwise.. give me a t-shirt or a jersey! What a nice side benefit for everyone to be in shape and attractive.. especially the ladies.. yes! What about injuries? Did you have to try out to get into this school? Kids these days either decide to do sports or not.. I doubt you could get all the high school to agree to exercise like this.. no way! Maybe if you promised them an iPad!
