@Bret 1959 Yes, that happened a lot in those days. Same with me when I was in junior high in the late 60's...but, it has changed for the good over the last 20-25 years or so. You are so right about the genetic lottery of highly skilled and athletic body type kids. But today a lot of the focus is on the unskilled and the unfit! Much better in today's PE teaching.
@souza-m7l2 жыл бұрын

I am currently working on becoming a physical education teacher and this is extremely motivational for me. I agree with the thought that physical education should be a core class just like Math, English, and Science. The fact that it is not is very unfortunate because it is most important that as humans we have a solid understanding of how to get healthy and then keep ourselves healthy as we grow older. We need to do better, support our subject, and fight for it. Physical Education is just as important as everything else we learn in school.

The biggest issue I have found with physical education classes is that they don't actually teach fitness, it is just a place to learn about sports. And those are two different things. JFK's physical fitness push was exemplified with La Sierra High School. If you look at what they were doing, they had at least half of their PE time focused on strength and conditioning exercises, what we now call calisthenics, and you had to be active then to earn the time to play. Most of the time spent in modern activity-based PE classes is spent waiting for turns to play, idle time on fields, and little education in long term fitness exercises. I cannot speak for William Simon Jr's program, it sounds like it isn't just a "get up and play" program, but that is what I saw a lot of in schools I attended and visited.
@schhim822 жыл бұрын
True. PE classes are just a “filler” time for other academic subject teachers to have a planning. At my school we try to stress both fitness and games (whether that be through activities or sports). There is a lot of waiting time due to lack of equipment, space, and class sizes. Also I find that so many students deal with anxiety of having to move their bodies in front of their peers. I wish it was different but I’m not sure what the solution is?
@efenty62352 жыл бұрын
for my experience, the anxiety comes from not being fit. PE doesn' t get you fit, you have to get yourself fit for PE. I believe this would be solved if PE classhad enough focus on fitness instead of games. as it is now it's like a competition, but it should really be more like _training_ for one
@slothmanfitness22902 жыл бұрын
Today's PE education is a lot different then in years past in a lot of schools The focus is on the individual and not just the whole class and more skills are learned and not just playing ball games. It's sad though because a lot of schools are still like that.
@AmitKumarYadav-jc8xw4 жыл бұрын

I am a PE teacher who just finished my 5th year. I try my best to lead by example and show my students that I practice what I preach. I make videos on my channel if me doing tricks and basketball dunks for fun and my students love them. I remember when I was younger how my PE teachers were obese and would roll the ball out and did not teach us anything! As I got older and knew what my purpose was, I knew I would change that narrative of the lazy PE teacher. To any PE teachers who are reading this, change the world! Our subject doesn’t have the respect is deserves but in the classroom we can still make a difference.

Way to go Bill Simon! Obesity, and so many other childhood health issues, is so easily addressed by a regular fitness program. Nevertheless, we cut fitness programming for those that need it the most and concentrate already inadequate funding to the high profile team sports that benefit less than 10% of K thru 12 students. Your program is the only one in Los Angeles that is holistically addressing the issue. Thank You!

So we don’t have to exercise to become more healthy and it’s not fun. I was not the best Physical Education student because of the skills you need in many sports to succeed. I probably walked 5 miles every day when I was going to school because I walked to school every day and this was my exercise each day. I did not run faster or jump higher because I was not practicing this but we had a good family and a good diet and I walked to school each day. I believe if my Dad had worked with me 4 or 5 times a week I would have been better at sports like Football or Basketball but to be honest I don't think my parents wanted me to concentrate on Physical Education. They were interested in seeing me succeed in Science or Math or History or Economics and I wish they had tole me exactly what they wanted and had stuck to their choice. It is too hard for a kid to choose his future major. But Physical Education is something all kids CAN do and can practice at and we can be better than adults by playing sports when we get to be 15 or 16 years old and actually be serving the function we are meant to serve. There used to be a saying "children should be seen and not heard" which I take to mean that kids should keep their opinions to themselves until they truly understand life. And sports helps us understand life in a very practical and pragmatic way.

I believe there's 2 problems that fuel the issues with proper funding and priority given to physical education programs. There are older "physical educators" that just roll the ball out and let the students "play" without doing much teaching or challenging the students. I had to work with someone like this. Those educators create this view of PE as playtime and nothing to be taken serious. Physical educators coming out of good programs that promote best practices often have to work with these veterans and get blown off as idealistic. That perception influences priority and funding. I ultimately had to leave the school I was at because my colleague wouldn't get out of the way of progress. I'm currently my own department at an elementary and can implement everything I feel is appropriate to inspire these children to be active for a lifetime. Unfortunately our school's budget has no money set aside for specials. We have to write grant proposals to our school's PTO which usually approves things but like he says, there should be funding available without having to beg for it. Our children deserve it

Love how its actually been proven that screens can help you in more than one way like video games help with teamwork and eye coordination so its not that bad.

Physical education is an underappreciated subject that many people think is not important. The average school has P.E budget of $764 dollars, which comes down to pennies for students. Not just students, but for everyone’s wellbeing, exercise is the best kind of therapy that helps with social, academic, intellectual and obviously physical health. That being said, physical education is overshadowed by other subjects, like math, English, science and history. If you aren’t good at math, well, you might not be a good budgeter. If you aren’t good at English, you might not be a good writer. If you aren’t good at science, oh well. You probably won’t become any sort of scientist, which is okay. However, if you can't do exercise or know about your body, it could cause serious health issues and you could be meeting your end a little early, to say it nicely. As William Simon Jr described it, exercise is “miracle growth” for the brain. Exercise helps the brain grow in many, many ways. Heres my P.E zoom class summary. Please change up some of the words in case. I'm probably gonna get an F for helping others cheat, but i guess some of you are having trouble. Have a nice day strangers on the internet.
