A review of Schuyler's full-sized Canterbury KJV Bible in black calfskin. In this detailed review, I contrast the Canterbury with the R.L. Allan Longprimer.

I have long wanted a top quality, premium Bible in KJV, but they don’t seem to make the one I’m willing to spend $200-$300 on. I absolutely love the look and styling of the Allan Longprimer 53! Especially in brown with being green a close second. However, the lack of italics and red letter has kept me from spending that type of money for one. I could forgive the black letter only, but the lack of italicized words is unacceptable to me. However with the brown being almost impossible to get anymore I would probably snatch one up if it were reasonable in price. Probably? I have never really been drawn to the Schuyler Bibles for some reason? The way they split up the psalms as you were showing, would drive me insane. I couldn’t handle that. I’m really much more inclined towards the traditional fonts of Allan and Cambridge. I do own a few different CBP bibles, including a mid size turquoise which I read more than anything else. I love that font and the styling of it. I will most likely buy a Cambridge turquoise or Topaz in goatskin. I really just want a brown goatskin, full yapp, which Cambridge does not offer. My ideal bible would probably be the Longprimer in brown WITH italics and red letter. Which isn’t going to happen. Love the reviews!

They are taking out all Apocrypha from new KJV versions. Only in expensive 200 - 300 Euro versions you can get it, in low cost versions one can't fine it :/ I bought Oxford Paperback version, they luckily included it.

Thanks for the comment, Hassan! Before around the year 1827, the KJV was printed with the Apocrypha much more often. But in or near that year, the British and Foreign Bible Society decided not to print or distribute Bibles containing the Apocrypha, and their decision was influential.

@@RGrantJones Can you tell me which leatherback or hardcover KJV with Apocrypha I can buy for low cost? Cambridge paragraphed Bible is one option, but it is not classical. I haven't found any till now which is low cost and also includes apocrypha. Those expensive leather versions cost a fortune, why would anyone buy it at all apart from very old people? :S

@@hassanmirza2392 - LOL! Hendrickson prints a hardback 1611 KJV with Apocrypha. It costs about $24. The New Cambridge Paragraph Bible with Apocrypha costs about $38. Both are hardbacks.

The Hendrickson 1611 is printed in a style meant to imitate the Roman type used in that time period, so it may be a bit difficult to read.

@@RGrantJones Cambridge Paragraph has less poetry and words are changed, and it is less classical feel, I already have bought an NRSV and NJB study version. KJV is not a good study bible as I have read. It has lots of literary value like Lutheran Bible.

The emphasis of the Schuyler Canterbury is on readability, hence the clean layout with larger typeface. I like it. The illuminated initial letters are also a beautiful nod to the early KJV bible. As for the Allan Longprimer, I like the traditional look of its typeface, and the center column of references with approximate dates for each chapter. It has a better layout for detailed bible study. The Longprimer may have larger type for the glossary, but I personally feel the airy layout of the Schuyler glossary, with more white space, makes it easier to read and less claustrophobic. I do agree with you about the line breaks for Psalms, although portraying them as poetry is a very nice concept. They’re both beautiful bibles. I appreciate your comprehensive reviews with phenomenal close-ups of the two bibles. Keep up the great work!

Europeans would not read SCHUYLER as "SKYLER" but as "SHUYLER" / SCHUJLER" where "U" is read as in Utah. We could also say "SHOYLER", which does not have any direct meaning. Both ways this is a close to German "scheu" - meaning "shy" or "Schueler" - meaning Student but also Scholar.

I'm from Colorado, USA. The first time I read Schuyler I read it as "Shoo lur". Schu like shoo away and lur like lurking around. Then later i found out about the Skyler pronounciation.

Depends on which Europeans. Thank you for the informative review. I think I'm with you on the break-up of the lines in Psalms. I like the single column format, but I don't know what they were thinking with those weird line breaks. As far as the font goes, I think the Canterbury is just what I need. I purchased the CBP Turquoise and I thought it would be great because it's so large and bold, but in reality, it just seems distracting. But when I use the Clarion or the Concord, it seems to work better for me, except for it being too small. Looks like the Canterbury will fit the bill. Disappointed there are no helps in the back like the ones in the Longprimer or the Turquoise. Great review!

My aim to own a King James is that it is classical. Is The New Cambridge Paragraph Bible with Apocrypha also classical to read? This Canterbury KJV reads like Oxford paperback, which is poetical. So, will The New Cambridge Paragraph Bible read like this one too, in a poetical way? I understand that 1611 version is mostly unreadable now, but still the Oxford provides poetry version in their paperback. I checked, you are correct. The 1611 KJV is unreadable, not even Oxford Version is this much cryptic. And what's the difference between The New Cambridge Paragraph Bible with Apocrypha and NKJV? Both sound the same to me. ;)

Hassan - the NKJV made many alterations, to include replacing the archaic verb endings (hath, hast) and pronouns (ye, thou). In comparison, the New Cambridge Paragraph Bible is a light revision. It retained most of those out-of-date forms of expression, but it did reformat the text into paragraphs, modernize spellings, and inserts quotation marks. The KJV has been lightly modified a few times over the years in similar ways by various editors. In my opinion, the KJV is still readable, but it was the first translation I was exposed to and I've been reading it all my life.

@@RGrantJones ok, thanks. I think Oxford is using 1966 translation. I read some of KJV 1611 on internet, it is really painful. I think this Cambridge version looks excellent, I will buy it later. KJV and Jewish Bible - Tanakh are special Bibles I think, nice collectables. But not good to know about new scholarship. But to know more about Bibles I will rely on Catholic versions probably. I must say that in the last few months I went from zero to knowing everything about the world of Bibles and Judaism-Christianity. Useful activity to kill corona-stress ;) Since Bible is a translated book, the emphasis is on translation. Quran we read only in classical Arabic, with some translation. The Bible world is full of translations, its a different universe.

Another great review. The colons used in the psalms here in the Canterbury are perplexing. Typically, colons (or asterisks, etc.) are there to mark the Caesura, the central pause in each psalm verse, so to guide those of us who read aloud or chant the psalms. (Line breaks can be arbitrary in a psalter, because it is the Caesura that anchors the rhythm and cadence, not the line ending, so it's not quite the same thing as enjambment in written poetry.) However, it is unusual, though not unheard of, to include a marked psalter in a bible. In any case, here the colons are clearly not used for this purpose, at least not consistently. They anchor nothing and seem to be randomly peppered into the verses with no apparent meaning.

That's a very informative comment. I don't recall whether Schuyler introduced any unusual punctuation into the book of Psalms in this edition. But I believe Schuyler did intend to format the psalms as poetry.

What a refreshing review of a bible that everyone is gushing over recently, the Canterbury. I never have seen a review that points out these various "flaws" in the typesetting. I also find the gap between the block and leather cover to be troublesome.

Thanks, Steve. I do admire the Canterbury. The designers did some quality work to make it aesthetically pleasing. I just prefer other options. At the end of the day, functionality is more important to me than beauty. To turn the Longprimer into a perfect KJV, I'd simply italicize translator-supplied text and add a tiny bit more space between the lines. My list of necessary changes for the Canterbury would be much longer!

By the way I eventually got a Canterbury and I must say that I love it. It is beautiful and I just can't seem to put it down. I am thinking it is the most readable Bible I have ever used even compared to the Turquoise and the Longprimer. I only felt this way after spending plenty of quality time with the Canterbury. I still agree with you that the Psalms do not always break up the text by line where it makes the most sense but really not that much of an issue to me as I thought it would be. I still find reading the Psalms in the Canterbury a real pleasure. It is interesting to note that the Schuyler Treveris does the line breaks in Psalm 2 exactly like you are recommending in this video. By the way the Treveris is the most beautiful Bible I have used. A reader like the Treveris is a nice change of pace compared to a verse by verse. Though I do prefer verse by verse when teaching or following the preacher.

Now you can get the personal size in black letter too. But I’m with you I wish they had a line of bibles that where in the middle of the full size and the personal size with 9.5 font they should call the personal size a compact and make a new personal size I.M.O.

When the binding shows that kind of ride-up between the signature threads and the surface to which they attach, I take a very fine watercolours brush, dip in in strong white glue (not the school stuff for the kiddies), and insert the hairs of the brush into the gap, then press it firmly with a knife or with my fingers on the spine. Then let it sit for a few hours to dry completely, and that problem will disappear. I suspect that the ribbons inside the spine may affect how much the binding clings together as desired. No problem. The solution is easy and with a FINE BRUSH, it is not necessary to slop glue all over the area.

Your review is the only one I’ve seen so far that makes a point of the odd way they broke up the psalms. Idk if the others didn’t notice it or just didn’t care, because to me, that seems like a flaw? Why would you take the effort to do the psalms in “poetry “ and then break the verses up in such unusual places? Just doesn’t make good sense. The more I see of these Schuyler bibles the less of a fan I become.

An excellent review once again,the waisted space with both the Quentel and Canterbury is a puzzle to me. The size of the concordance font also makes no sense considering the empty spaces on the page. I was gifted a Turquoise CBP brother so I will be able to review one, I'm very excited to see the bible first hand. I didn't keep their purple hand size long enough to fully appreciate the text, but from memory it was very nice in that size. I also have the 53LP Brown which will not be reviewed over private reasons😉 BUT boy is it beautiful, a true work of art and the first Allan I had ever seen, its the bible that started my quest for the perfect KJV....I love it! That bible replaced my Nasb Reader and now that bible can bless someone else. I'm actually looking at getting the Compact CBP edition that I also reviewed along side the hand size Turquoise, IMHO you would probably find that bible to be very nice. The paper they used is different than any other bible I've reviewed, the print was the darkest I've seen out of all the bibles I've reviewed. I'd like to compare their compact with some Cambridge bibles I have coming soon, I think many folks need to see that it is a very good alternative for a lot less money. I am like you in regards to the Schuyler, I liked my NKJV Quentel but it just didn't grab me for some reason. One thing that really bugged me was their choice of red letter, it is far to bland I'd rather have all black and am slowly becoming a black letter fan thanks to you. Don't get me wrong, I love a good red letter but, it ruins the reading experience when poorly executed. Another thing about the Schuyler is the weight, they are VERY heavy bibles which can be a pain. I really look forward to getting a PSQ NKJV, when that one comes out I will be truly divided on getting red letter or not, if its the usual bland red than I'm going black. Thanks again for the show!

Of the upcoming Schuylers, I'm most interested in the wide margins. I'd prefer an NKJV or KJV with all black letters, a font no smaller than 9 pt, and symmetric margins, perhaps a bit wider at the gutter. We'll see what they do. If that option doesn't work out, the Nelson NKJV Comfort Print Preaching Bible might be worthwhile. That CBP Compact did look appealing in your video. The paper and print were both impressive.

Hey mr Jones love your precise bible critiques. Has this Bible grown on you I’m curious. I find the paper color is different in the nkjv to the Canterbury Schuyler, more yellow. And I find the font plenty bold compared to my csb and cbp note takers but not as good as the Thomas Nelson comfort print, yet still plenty good and can read without my reading glasses pretty comfortably. Thanks for the kind comment, G String! No, the Canterbury mostly sits in its box waiting for another opportunity to appear in a Bible review. I agree with you that the font is better than that in the CBP NoteTakers Bible, but it just isn't bold enough for me. We're all wired differently, and it's likely that I'm in the minority on this point. The Schuyler Quentels appear to be quite popular, even though they're now printed on thinner paper, which would tend to enhance the newsprint effect.

How much obsolete is KJV compared to modern NRSV or ESV in your opinion? Many people say it is quite outdated now, although still the best piece of English literature. I have KJV Paragraph Bible.

I read the KJV often and appreciate the quality of its prose. In the New Testament, there are only a few passages where it is obscure. In the Old Testament, particularly in Job and some of the prophetic books, the KJV can be unclear. I don't think of the KJV as obsolete, but it is more challenging to understand than the modern translations you mention. Sometimes I regard that difficulty as an advantage, particularly when the KJV is puzzling because it reflects an ambiguity in the original language. On the whole, I find the KJV more easy to comprehend than Shakespeare.

Great review, love the details, however I reached a different conclusion. I prefer the Canterbury over the LP and the Turquoise. I find the columns in the Turquoise are a bit too narrow and like you said, the print is smaller in the LP. The Canterbury as a reader is just right, but if you want a reference edition the Longprimer might be the better option.

From what I've observed interacting with people, some like narrow columns and some don't. I think we're all wired differently. For myself, I like the narrow columns (a little over 30 characters per line) in the Turquoise. I find the wider columns troublesome because my eye has to toe a straight line all the way across the page, but switching lines frequently is a breeze for me. So the Turquoise and I get along well. (I'm just holding out for Cambridge to print it in all black letters.) But it might not work that way for you! In my CBP Turquoise review I quoted the number of characters per line in the Turquoise (30), Allan Longprimer (35), and Canterbury (36). Those numbers came from choosing five lines with small words packed tightly on them, counting the characters (including spaces and punctuation marks), and averaging over the five values. The column width is: Turquoise (53 to 54 mm), Longprimer (55 mm), and Canterbury (60 mm). The Canterbury is advertised as 11 points, but the capital T is the size of a Times New Roman 10.5 pt, while lower case characters look close to 12 point Times New Roman. Capitals in the Turquoise are also 10.5 pt TNR, but the lowercase letters are around 10.5 or 11 pt. The Longprimer capitals are also around 10.5 pt TNR equivalent, while the lowercase letters are somewhere between 10 and 10.5. The line spacing is generous in the Canterbury, good in the Turquoise, and on the stingy side in the Longprimer (but I like it just fine). Another way to measure it is to take the height of a column and divide it by the number of lines, then divide that by 0.3514. That gives you the number of points in the Pica system. It measures character size and leading together in a lumped fashion. Here's what I get --Canterbury: 11.8 pt. Turquoise: 11 pt. Longprimer: 10 pt. I hope that's helpful.

Im just trying to find a bible that isn't super heavy and has minimal to no ghosting that is eady to read! I have a Holman kjv now and I can't read it because of the ghosting. It gives me a headache! So this is my mission to find an easy to read bible! I must admit though I think r l allan bibles have the absolute best binding out of any of them. Do you find the tight leading between the lines bothersome to you when you read the allan longprimer?

No, it really doesn't bother me. I'm not sure why. The leading isn't as large as I'd like, but it's acceptable. I think it may be because the print and paper quality are so good, and because the columns are relatively narrow, so that my eye doesn't feel trapped in a close space. I've had Bibles where the line spacing was so close that I just stopped using them. But not the Longprimer. However, as they used to say in commercials, your results may vary. After all, just about everyone loves the Canterbury, but of the three (Turquoise, Longprimer, and Canterbury), I put the Canterbury dead last.

The cost of sending this item is $75! Absolute disgrace. Allan sends theirs out for FREE - worldwide! The lady stated that due to being such a poor revenue shop it wasn’t possible to send out for free - so this massive fine / penalty is added if you live in the UK - probably their next biggest importer! Hey there nice review I am in search of a new bible. Would you suggest the kjv or the nkjv. I have seen a lot of debates saying to stick with the kjv over the newer translations. I like the ideal of making it easier to read and understand. But I also would like to make sure I am not getting something that is got a bunch of fake or misleading words thanks for your time.

K W - I suggest you take a look at the NKJV at biblegateway.com and see if you like how it reads. Compare it with your KJV. In the New Testament, the NKJV and the KJV are based on the same Greek text. Apart from using more modern English, the NKJV also sometimes differs from the KJV where the NKJV translators follow modern lexicons and so interpret Greek words differently. There are more high-quality KJV editions available out there, like the Turquoise and the Allan Longprimer, but Nelson has improved its NKJV editions recently. Their Single-Column Reference Bible with the Comfort Print typeface is very good, if you don't mind the format. Unfortunately, I don't know of a verse-by-verse NKJV with center column references and quality binding, typeface, and paper that I can recommend.

Do you know the exact poundage on this bible? I wanted a bible I can take to church but was afraid of this one being to heavy.

I don't know the exact weight, but I weighed myself first, then myself plus the calfskin Canterbury, using my beam balance bathroom scale, which is pretty accurate. I get something between 3 and 3 1/16 pounds. (Now to start that diet!)

R. Grant Jones lol thanks for weighing it for me! Do you find this bible very heavy or does it seem regular to you? Im just curious because I really want to buy this bible but I have carpal tunnel syndrome and holding a very heavy book in my hands to read can be a problem. Thank you for replying

It feels solid and dense. If I had to hold it in my hands for an extended period of time, I think my arms would tire. If I hold it in my hands with my hands resting on my legs, I think I could hold it indefinitely. It's lighter than my calfskin ESV Study Bible, but heavier than my Allan 53 Longprimer and my CBP Turquoise.
