I've loved How Stuff Work's since 2011 and heard so much about Jonathan Strickland from varying podcasts. It's a real pleasure to see him. Good Marketing, stopped and watched for him.

I'm super glad to see this going forward. I've been a huge proponent of Hydrogen (as a fuel source) for a long time. But seriously guys, can we get a little more science into a video called "The Science behind..." ?!? Using the term "science" generously, we got almost a whole minute of science in this 5 minute video. 0:50 - 1:47. A Very important point was brought up about how to produce the usable Hydrogen. I was hoping for some science there... instead the answer was "Toyota is sharing lots of patents." Uh, what? That doesn't answer the question AT ALL. I hate sounding like a troll. I love Techzilla, And I know I shouldn't expect a doctoral dissertation in a 5 minute KZbin video sponsored by Toyota. I guess I just wanted more than I got here. BTW: for those interested, the answer is... Nuclear energy to produce Hydrogen from sea water. There is no free lunch in the world of physics and engergy, but that is BY FAR the cleanest actual solution.

SciPunk215 Hydrogen is not energy source it is energy storage. You need to put in 3x more energy into making hydrogen than you get from it. E.g. if you use 1GW nuclear plant to make hydrogen, it effectively becomes 330MW power plant

Yup, 330MegaWatts of clean quiet energy. Not seeing the problem here.

SciPunk215 Well, I guess it is OK if you do not see the problem with wasting 2/3 of energy you produce, or that you have to build 3GW power plant instead of 1GW, or put up 3x more solar panels etc...

there are still a lot of risks involved ie hydrogen is very explosive but i think we'll get there. Hopefully i will be driving a hydrogen powered car soon!

Gasoline is very explosive too, so I don't see that as a major problem.

It is very concerning that the only thing that I have seen been cover is this hydrogen cell from Toyota, that happen to be the sponsors. I been a fan of tekzilla for many years and have always held their opinion and comments very high, similar to any respectful journalist. This makes me wonder of the editorial direction this program is going.

Take it for what it's worth. This was definitely an advertisement for Toyota. That should be clear to anybody who watches it. This is nothing new... tech writers have been writing "articles" sponsored by industry for years now. In print, they are usually labeled as such. This was sort of labeled as such when they said "Sponsored by Toyota" before and after the video. AFAICT, the information is accurate, though not complete.

Where do carbons even come from? Doesn't it come from the impurities from in the gas? Why not just provide 100% octane, as the only fuel sold? In reality what is being sold at the pump is automatically one of the first things to go when the "clock stops", and another 1000 year reign is put forth. I can't help but think of what is built and brought out win this happens, including the tearing down of this system of control that holds us all down in what I call "slave days". Just the same all laws are torn down and everything is legalized. You have to be reminded that 9/11 signifies the "exclusion" of God, while admitting that you can't live without him (a source of life. God does work in mysterious ways!). . Just the same, who the hell wants to drive around in a electric car when you have experienced a gas engine? It seems like the only modifications to engine's would be no different than the ones done to RC cars, with brushless motors, increase voltage (something along those lines), and gearing changes? Of-course I'm not sold on green-house gases at all, since the world is destroyed over and over again anyways. And i have read that cars today produce more emissions than muscles cars of yesterday. In-fact I've heard of catalytic converter as being "soul-trappers", and that there is a bigger truth behind catalytic converters, and flying cars? Make it 100% octane, and you'll have better fuel mileage, as well as less fuel carbons that decrease an engines life span (gives a whole new meaning to those assholes that drive around in those decked out muscle cars, going 5 MPH?)... Oh, also... COPS ARE PURE SCUM!

This idea and concept is not that new....as a matter of fact you can take a 1984 car and run it on pure hydrogen.

Hydrogen is not the future, and hydrogen economy will never be. Hydrogen is abundant on Earth but not in the form you need it and you need to put in *lots* of energy to make it. It takes around 300kWh to create hydrogen needed to fill up Toyota Mirai (5 kgs), and Mirai can do 300 miles. With 300kWh, electric car can do 900 miles. You can say, we will put solar panels, wind turbine or any other renewable and make hydrogen that way for 'free', but that also does not make sense, because with the same solar panels or wind turbines you can support 3-4 times more electric than hydrogen vehicles. Alternative is to make hydrogen from natural gas (95% of hydrogen is created today this way), so technically hydrogen is fossil fuel, and this process releases huge amounts of CO2. Natural gas mostly comes from fracking. So hydrogen does not solve environment issues.

Why don't you tell us where the hydrogen vines from. Oh yea I forgot. It comes from fossil fuels. And by the way. Hydrogen is an energy carrier not a fuel source.
@Ishiisan
@Ishiisan 9 жыл бұрын
not always fossil fuel though. can produce from methane gas too right? some places in the world do collect methane gas from landfill now. and some places use biomass to produce methane gas. :)
