Humans don’t have pheromones, women’s periods do not sync up with one another, and there’s no scientific evidence that a menstrual cycle lasts 28 days. OB-GYN and health communicator Dr. Jen Gunter explains.

Up next, The science of sex, love, attraction, and obsession ► • The science of sex, lo...
There have been many misconceptions about women’s health in recent decades, resulting in a widespread lack of proper education on menstrual science. According to Gunter, this can be incredibly harmful, as it perpetuates myths, leads to misunderstandings about normal menstrual health, and prevents people from advocating for themselves effectively.
In just 10 minutes, Gunter explains ovulation, the reason for menstrual cramps, the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, and the potential dangers of commonly used period-tracking apps. Finally, Gunter reiterates the need for better menstrual health education to combat ignorance and misinformation, which can have serious implications for women's health and autonomy.

Nowadays, women in Brazil are facing a regression in abortion laws. Our congress passed a law that criminalizes girls and women if they attempt to abort after 22 weeks, even in cases of rape and anencephaly. They can be penalized with more than 20 years in jail, which is harsher than the punishment for rapists, who can be jailed for just 10 years.

I find this really sad. Even till now; we don't know much nor does there seem to be an improvement on women's health (eg. Gynae tools still used, preganc pushing techniques, periods etc.). Even with other doctors and researchers trying to bridge the gap; there's not enough of them for it to be effective nor recognised.

Also reason why effort to helping any women, whether they’re colleagues, family or just passing by on the train. @mpras684
@mpras684 10 күн бұрын
@@Amor_fati.Memento_Mori Great question. I’ve experienced various type of stomach pain, having IBS and being lactose intolerant 🤭 Sharp, spasmodic, stabbing, bloating or more raw kind of pain. I’ve only ever fainted from period pain though. I’m sorry, I’ve not answered your question and am wasting your time! Period pain (cramps) for me tends is focussed in the lowest part of the abdomen and lower. It’s quite a raw kind of pain that can come in waves of intensity or be a dull, persistent ache that can be quite draining on occasion. Heat really helps. Have you ever experienced relief from applying heat to a stomach ache? I am lucky as I’ve not endured the unimaginable pain some woman with PCOS and other conditions experience. Ummm… wow I really hope someone out there can do a better job than I have. But again, thanks for the great question 😊

I like menstruating, but it changes my mood so much during PMS. The last 6 years I've had experiences that led me into depression, but my life was hell for 2 of the 4 weeks of a month. In the PMS week, everything I felt was just too much, the sadness, the rage, the loneliness, the shame, my thoughts used to be so self-deprecating, I could lay in bed for hours. I had a Copper IUD, hence the pain hit HARD the following week. This year, I changed to Mirena IUD, so I don't menstruate anymore and everything is better, my relationships are better, my emotions are felt and gone, I'm in control, I feel like living again ^^ I still have self-deprecating thoughts (which are an habit I'm trying to break) and feel cramps, but nothing compares, I used to throw up because of the nausea caused by pain. Thank you for sharing this video!

Your right to female-only spaces is threatened and these are crucial for females' well-being and safety. If you can't call police on creepy dude in woman's bathroom because he will call you transphobic and you may even loose your job for that, then you are in danger. Think about why those spaces were established in the first place. If you don't need female spaces then use gender neutral ones but don't make decision for all women, including little girls and those with traumas who don't want to change in front of people with male bodies.

Sure but she doesn't actually say that. She says "Humans don't have pheromones, it's never been proven". If something hasn't been proven, you cannot say that it's true. Until there is robust evidence to prove that it exists, it remains untrue. It's how science works, you would not want scientists to say things exist when they don't know. The lightbulb example doesn't work in this situation. It's an invention, not something that happens in nature. Look if you want to believe pheromones exist, by all means, but there's no scientific basis to prove that it's true. Your evidence is probably anecdotal which doesn't fly when it comes to scientific studies. We're learning new things all the time, it's not set in stone forever. If you think you can prove it then by all means, do research to prove it and you can be the one to say you proved it to be true.

I agree that it’s was bold of her to just flat out say that “there’s no such thing as cycle syncing” when I don’t know a single woman who hasn’t experienced it first hand, regardless of “concrete” evidence. My assumption is that it happens for reproductive purposes- ie we all start to ovulate at the same time so that we can get pregnant as a group by one male easily

Menstrual pain should not be treated as arresting the body's natural analgesics on such a regular cycle leads to more severe and pain month after month.
@rachelbroughton6457

Do you have any evidence for this? All the evidence suggests that treating pain with NSAIDs is safe and effective each month. We cannot expect women to just “put up with” pain, it’s not viable. Plus some women (especially those who have conditions such as endometriosis) have debilitating periods. There are very few other circumstances where anyone is expected to just put up with pain without any treatment. It is barbaric to suggest that we shouldn’t treat our pain.

@seanceknowles2911 Okay maybe it's a coincidence. I've come across syncing multiple times in my life, especially in the workplace. I don't doubt your experience. It may even be simply be multiple factors that contribute. Sleep cycle and literally the people you spend the most time around. Scattered hours here and there might not compare to doing 8-12 hour shifts with colleagues

I've never seen any evidence, other than anecdotal, that a person's period will sync with that of the folks around them. If it really happens (which FWIW, as a women's health NP, I do *not* believe it does) we have not in any way found the cause of said synching. Best guess is that it's coincidence and it's just a group of people with similar cycles.

Women and men have different experiences of life, and its good to be cognizant of it, but there is no need to be alarmist. Weaponizing recent developments in peoples lack of communication and abilities to empathise with something other than themselves is no way to go about things. This new gender division in meda and politics is much more problematic than the gender specific problems in themselves.

I thought it was great that the video started out talking about how we should educate people about the menstrual cycle and not just how it leads to pregnancy. But at the end, we are right back to discussing it in regards to pregnancy, and even worse, about abortion, which is one of the most debated political topics currently. It really would have been so much more valuable without the politics added in.
@angelagraves865
@angelagraves865 12 күн бұрын
Regardless of its aspects that aren't about pregnancy, the menstrual cycle is still intimately involved with pregnancy, so it's entirely appropriate that they be discussed together. Same with abortion. It's relevant. As for the politics of the situation, feel free to ignore them as you will, but some of us feel a level of dread and anger over Roe v Wade being overturned that can't be overstated. And yes, that too is relevant when discussing womens' health and peoples' general ignorance about it.
@MommaBeeb
@MommaBeeb 12 күн бұрын
@@angelagraves865 I didn’t say it wasn’t relevant. It seemed the premise of the video was meant to be discussing the menstrual cycle APART from pregnancy, and that is my main complaint. There are MANY things the video could have gone into about menstrual issues that it didn’t in order to highlight one side of a political issue. I don’t ignore the issue of abortion as a political or personal issue. I simply feel that a one sided take on it did not belong in this video. If this video was meant to be more about the general idea of women’s health, perhaps the political take could have zeroed in on the stress people have about the overturning of Roe v. Wade. But, it was a video about menstrual cycles. 😏
@angelagraves865
@angelagraves865 12 күн бұрын
@@MommaBeebThe premise of the video is in the title. As far as the so called political take goes, why does it have to be seen as political to warn people of the probable outcome these new laws. I guess it's uncomfortable for some people to face. Maybe you could make a comment warning people of the apparent outrage of the last minute or so of this video that can be pinned to the top of the comments. That way maybe there won't be so much fetid hot air blowing around the comment section. ✌
