One of the other detractors to the tail car in a tandem is that the front car totally blocks the airflow to the trailing car's radiator, so the engine starts to overheat. This is why you see the cars switch places after a tandem.

I learned drafting as a young kid when we got our racing Go-Karts on the car tracks that were 1/2 mile dirt/clay, if you got out of line you went to the back! My pit guy was an engineer and after adjusting our body kits and plastic cone that deflected air over the steering wheel and leaning our seats as far back as possible to get our body out of the wind! It was fun in the limited modified and open classes because we were up over 100mph! So fun and so frustrating!

American's don't give 2 craps about something quite so dominant. Keep in mind, our sports artificially inflate the number of games in a finals series to last as close to 7 games as possible in NBA and as long as possible in other "American" sports, as well. I -enjoy- NASCAR and Indycar 100000000% more than I -enjoy- F1 but F1 is can't miss. I still think Indycar is superior entertainment and F1 is little more than daddy's money vroom vrooming around (sans Lewis, obv, given his background). F1 is about wealth and opportunity whereas NASCAR is about actual talent (in the car provided... I'm not saying a NASCAR driver will outclass an F1 driver in an F1 grid. No sireeee that's not my argument). Hamilton is -not- as superior to his competition as the stats would have us believe. He's superior, but not as superior. The side-draft is actually when the front of the passing car gets to the spoiler of the other car for about half a car length. The passing car then moves a lane or two over so they don't get side-drafted themselves - or slow themselves and the car they're passing which is what was visually shown. That section could've been worded/shown a bit differently.

See i tailgate for the opposite reason. If there is somebody in the left lane matching speed with semis I get right up their ass to get them to finally pull ahead. But also for the same reasons, my truck gets better mpg at 75 than 55 and fighting huge side drafts from semis. Not to mention how stupid and dangerous it is to ride side by side with anyone on a 2 lane, let alone an 18 wheeler that will flatten even my pickup.

What really makes NASCAR awesome, in modern era = Cameras. All racing, but especially NASCAR. Seeing the front spoiler cam really brings the feeling of just how fast 200mph is. In car cam and you can see just how hard those drivers are working to keep the car on path. Rear bumper is so great, seeing the chasing cars fine adjustments to stay in the draft, like a 500HP giant shark chasing down and chewing up the asphalt. The on track cams, like Jerry said "V-V-V-V-V-V-V-VVVVIPVIPVIP", and the debris flying off the track. That roar as they approach, and then silence after just as quickly. So bloody awesome. Stay gold.

Lots of good information here! One thing that should be noted is how the tandem drafting works. Back in the early 2010s NASCAR had bumpers that lined up better with the Car of Tomorrow and it forced drivers to lock bumpers and tandem draft in order to win at the restrictor plate tracks. This wasn't really "bump drafting" as they weren't bumping, but actually the rear car pushing continuously on the front car. The "aero-push" also doesn't come into effect that much on the restrictor plate tracks where tandem drafting exists. The main disadvantage that trailing cars faced was actually overheating because the tandem draft covered the grill opening and caused them to run hot. So drivers would work with one in front and one in back for a few laps and then have to switch going into a corner and then they could hook up and keep tandem drafting. It truly became an art in the early 2010s and being able to time the switch and being able to tandem and switch in the shortest amount of time became a real skill set for drivers. Unfortunately when NASCAR introduced the Gen6 car the tandem drafting sort of died out because the bumpers didn't line up as well, and NASCAR implemented rules to forbid locking bumpers, which I personally dislike.

The side draft is probably such an enormous part of the package now because the fastest tracks have enormous spoilers. It becomes an equally enormous parachute when you push your bow wave onto it. One of the legends of NASCAR is that Dale Earnhardt could "see the air." IMO what he actually did was figure out side drafting before anyone else did and keep his mouth shut so his secret didn't get out. If you watch vintage NASCAR footage the broadcasters would often say when the cars started to get side by side the aero would suck the cars together. Then they switched to saying the passing car would tuck in close to try to hide in the bow wave of the forward car as long as possible. Drivers probably thought that's what was going on at the time.

When I used to be a jackman in Nascar, aerodynamics are one of the biggest things during race...especially on the super speedways. A small dent on the car can drastically help or hurt the car's performance during the race. Watching the races from Talledega and Daytona will show how important aerodynamics is

"Race cars like a NASCAR Cup Car are often already producing as much power as they can" iirc those things can do over 800 and are restricted to between 500 and 650 depending on the track
@PheonixRise6663 жыл бұрын
Producing as much power as they can doesn't necessarily mean the engine in turned to 11, it can also mean they're making the maximum amount of power allowed in the rules

I love how they cut straight to James when Jeremiah said "Noooo, don't leave me dad!" lmao

It was really nice to have the science of shake n bake explained to me by Tom DeLonge of blink 182 fame. Thanks for taking time out of your busy touring schedule for us Tom

Anyone wanna create an F0 league where active aero, CVT transmissions, ABS etc would all be allowed. it’d be like a group B mixed with F1 very few rules but more interesting races!

I cant watch Nascar but the science behind the drafting always fascinated me

Definitely sending some truck nuts dipped in glue and coated with some of my dogs hair for the wind tunnel, then link in a certain sponsor to test the "airflow" difference after the sponsor product has done its magic 🤣👌😉

Donut should have a section teaching how motorsports strategize racing for different tracks and car

Since we’re talking aerodynamics, how about the aerodynamics of a winged dirt sprint car? Dirt racing is long overdue on this channel, I’d love to see your take on sprint cars!

I really enjoy doing this when cruising on the highway in my big work van. It's crazy how riding behind a semi can increase your speed by a couple miles an hour without changing throttle position.

At first I was thinking “who doesn’t know what slip-streaming is” and then I figured out I apparently really didn’t. I never knew that tandem reduced the overall drag and not just the drag on the rear car. I figured it was just the most efficient way to slipstream.

The feeling i get from this is like when i learned the different positions on NFL teams, and their functions in regard to breaking the (more obvious) defending line. I always root for the offense. Its fun to watch.
