Everyone knows that auto makers have watched the success of The Fast and the Furious's 100 speed transmissions and have slowly used their R&D to copy them. It takes a lot of engineering hours to go from a 5 speed to a 8 speed; we will be living in 2050 and still only be at 30 speeds. By them F&F will probably be using 200 speed transmissions

Please, I agree with Jeremiah that an episode on the Koenigsegg Light Speed Transmission would be awesome. Also, another one on Koenigsegg Direct Drive ("no gears"). Engineering Explained has covered both, and even others, like Untangled (very first video explaining Koenigsegg LST), but the Donut touch would be refreshing. I would also love an episode on the forgotten gear systems from the past, and in transmissions with uncommon shifter patterns, like the three-on-the-tree manual, the universal "dog leg" pattern for 3-speed manuals (floor or column mounted) and the rare examples that didn't follow it, the "dog leg" pattern itself, outboard shifters, why the GT40 is right hand drive and shifter is to the right, old automatic transmission patterns ("P, N, D, L, R"; instead of "P, R, N, D, L"), etcetera. Please note that I know the answer to all of these things, no need to comment on me, but I haven't seen a video compilation of all of these, and Donut making one in the style we all know and love, would be awesome. i love this channel, i love B2B. i found donut on the up to speed episode on the civic and felt the joy and emotion you guys have for accomplishing so much. growing up my step dad worked at one of the oldest garages in town. i learned a bit about body, internals, paint, and i got really good at sweeping up the shop whenever the day was over. he would come home and share his excitement about working on a new or different kind of car and being amazed at the innovation some companies put on the road. tragically, he was also abusive, alcoholic, and whenever i was in the garage with him he generally made it an unpleasant experience due to his behavior. that man is long out of my life and im beginning to see the splendor and amazement of his passion in cars underneath all the addiction and abuse. i never knew anything about how transmissions worked but you make it so easy to understand and youre also not blasting hot booze breath in my face about it. i drive trucks and im trying to get into my companies repair shop on my off time. im beginning to enjoy tinkering with things, especially on my own 350z im trying to put back together but no space or tools keeps me from utilizing the knowledge i get from youtube outside of super basic things. sure would be cool to replace or fix the transmission myself and feel proud of it rippin down the street when its done. this is great.

I missed the dct whether on track, autocross, hills or daily driving. I never liked the manual. It just always felt like a hinderance. I had a chance to drive a 6mt e92 m3 and a 10 speed zl1 and even with the chassis and engines swapped I still preferred the paddle shift. The modern automatic(including dcts) are so responsive and fun they allow you to experience the car in a way you just can't in a manual.

For many years I've driven a 2.0L 4-cylinder Nissan Sentra. I've not had a single person get into that car and not come out saying "That things quick!" or "How do you drive this? It's power is scary" or "Dude I spun the wheels like 5 times before I figured out how to take off" . I would love to hear Donut talk more about CVT and why it's so dope, living in the power band is a special feeling you never wanna go back from

I’d like to see a study on this. I think it would have more to do with load on the motor than rpm but a gearbox would have to help efficiency a little? Right? I’m sure it will become a thing if it makes range longer.

My first car was a ‘91 V-8 Camaro. I had the best gas mileage in that car on long highway trips. The tachometer was barely over idle, and providing no traffic, it would burn 1/4th tank (150 miles-ish) on cruise control at 62mph (was the ‘90s and 55mph was still the law)

The Porsche Taycan has a 2 speed transmission. When you are going on the road normaly, it's in 2nd gear, but when you are going slowly, but hit the accelerator hard, it stifts down to 1st, to get a higher leverage.

@@2wheelhoon813 I've experienced one. That's why I can say it. They are a good transmission thus far. Not sure if you've ever experienced an automatic, but the modern automatics are becoming quite good.
@2wheelhoon8132 жыл бұрын
@@emerycottle3166 what fucking part of I owned one don't you understand. I had the truck for like 6 months. 2019 5.0 10 speed 2wd. The only thing it was good for was wide open throttle or towing. Everything else it was junk. Ispecially when it was cold. Slip in and out of gear. At part throttle it would wind the engine out to like 3500 rpm at times than randomly slam into 3rd gear. Usually it would bark the tires or send you flying into the car Infront of you. In the snow no matter what I did I couldn't get rid of traction control or abs. As soon as the tires spun the truck flipped shit. It would go to a false neutral (clutches open computer controlled) until the wheels slowed back down. The biggest problem with that is the wheel speed decides when the transmission goes back into gear. Not rpm. So when your on the throttle and it suddenly falls out of gear unexpectedly the engine revs up. When the wheel spin stops the transmission goes back into gear before the rpms come down. It feel like your dumping the clutch in a standard trans car when it does it. One time it went back into gear on a dry part of the road and slammed so hard y glovebox came down. The 10 speeds are garbage. Way to meany variables for an inanimate object to handle. It has to take into account all sorts of parameters. Intake air temp. Oil temp. Trans temp. Ambient temp. Coolant temp. Rpm. Throttle position. Current gear. Wheel speed. Altitude. Ethonal content. The list goes on. A computer controlled automatic is incredibly complicated to engineer. It's not fords fault. But someone should have stood up and said no. We need to just stick with the 6 speed. Your not gaining anything in real world conditions. Just a PR stunt aimed at towing capabilities that are to large for a light half ton. And 0-60 times. It's nonsense. If you ever own one for yourself you WILL regret it unless you are completely ignorent to major noises and expensive repairs after 5 years

It’s a pity that they banned CVTs in formula 1. Williams we’re developing one in then FW14/15 active cars, back in the early 90s. There’s probably and alternate universe where everyone had CVTs in F1, and imagine Ferrari marketing their “F1” gearbox.
@robertct062 жыл бұрын
CVTs can’t handle as much power. Or so I’ve heard
@chaoringmeister2 жыл бұрын
@@robertct06 Well Williams did have a lot of trouble getting the thing to last any significant distance out of it before it was banned. Worse was that it would cause the engine to run at peak power all the time…imagine doing full race distances at over 15,000 rpm constantly! If it wasn’t banned, I would imagine the drivers would’ve refused to race.
