No, but I have a family history of Type II and several of my older blood tests showed I was pre-diabetic. It hasn't shown up since I got my weight under control, but this is not easy or possible for everyone to do.

Officially, I am. But my blood sugar levels are only in the prediabetic range. But don't tell my insurance. It allows me access to certain medications and services.

This topic frustrates me so much, people are truly showing how selfish they are (especially I've been seeing this on twitter). There is already a shortage of this. People need to realise the difference between NEED and WANT. I know quite a few people who need ozempic, wegovy and trulicity for diabetes and haven't been able to be getting refills on time because the pharmacies are always out of stock.

I would add to the wrap up around the 50 minute mark that not all people who are overweight/obese/fat eat fast food often or at all and some people are limited by food deserts. Also, you need to share that place in Piccadilly circus that's cheap, delicious and healthy!

In addition to this, I've been dismissed by doctors and told to 'just lose weight' rather than treating actual health conditions until I was in my 30's. I'm now really pushy about getting actual care and getting them to document why they won't do anything if they try that bs again. fat people can get sick or injured and it have nothing to do with their weight.

I don't think you covered this, but many disabled people gain (or lose) weight due to a disability, because of medication or lifestyle factors (exercise being more difficult for example). Medical professionals often assume that weight is the cause of the person's disability, when for a lot of people it is a side effect. But what is more concerning is that I know people with complex medical conditions who have been offered Ozempic- despite there not being any research done on how it affects people with their disability. I am talking specifically about people who have conditions related to the GI tract.

BMI is the craziest concept. I'm a 5'9" man who weighs 220 lb. according to BMI I'm obese and yet I don't have much body fat at all. I'm not covered in muscle either. I have a physically demanding job so I do have muscle, just not loads of heavy defined muscle. It's crazy to me that I have a flat stomach, my thighs don't touch, and I have basically no loose fat anywhere on my body and yet I'm clinically obese, ok Jan.

No. Despite being an overweight American, I am not diabetic, or even pre-diabetic. Like Correy, I've always been big. It runs in my family. I can track it back at least 3 generations. To make things more fun, I have hEDS, which often makes exercising difficult.

Did the weight make it harder to get the hEDS diagnosis? I know the stereotype is skinny, very young looking, and frail.

@@333kbool The fact that I had a doctor who actually *listened* to me, and that I was able to tell him my nephew was diagnosed with hypermobility by the army was helpful.

@AlatheD I have multiple cousins, an uncle, and a sibling with it. Yet, I struggle to get doctors to even attempt to diagnose my child or myself, which is next to impossible.

@@333kbool Our medical system makes me crazy. I was fortunate to find a good doctor, and I went in on my first appointment probably looking like I was ready for a fight. Because that had been my previous experience with doctors. I hope you can find one who will really listen to you.

Side effects: digestive system can stop working altogether. Constipation can become severe. This drug produces an alterfical hormone that is in the stomach. This hormone helps to tell your body when you are full. This hormone also can tell you when you are hungry. This works for people that genetically are lacking that hormone. Those are the ones who will have to stay on it for life. I.e. my child and I. Before this medication we had problems like forgetting to eat and then other times over eating. I also had an Overactive digestion. I didn't get things from my food because it shot threw me too fast. Ozempic has helped make it so I get things from my food. It has also helped tell me hey you are hungry eat and gave me the energy to go to the gym. My child had to lower their dose because the constipation was so bad they hadn't pooped even with laxatives for weeks. These drugs are for people who need help because diet and exercise alone aren't working. For ones that need the synthetic hormone help. For ones who need their digestion to slow down.

My step mum is experiencing the negative side of this, she already lost weight for her diabetes and is now taking a similar drug. She now has no appetite, but doesn't really need to lose any more weight, it kind of sucks

Hey Sciguys, would you consider doing an episode on the recent CASS review that's lead NHS england to banning puberty blockers? As the relative of someone who was a trans kid and a trans adult myself, it's been extremely distressing to see this being covered in a very transphobic light by basically every british news org. I think it would be great if you could read and breakdown the CASS review so us not-science-paper-literate folks can understand the review. You have done trans issue episodes in the past so maybe you already plan to look at this, but if not I hope you will consider it.

Here's one point that all y'all didn't address. For what other chronic condition do we yank away a patient's medication after a fixed period of time? Statins, ezetimibe, or PCSK9 inhibitors for hyperlipidemia? Antihypertenstives for hypertension? Any other antidiabetic medication for diabetes? Antiplatelets and anticoagulants for hypercoagulability? For chronic conditions, if you take the treatment away, the benefits also go away, and disease process comes back. What kind of a heartless bastard would do that? And yet, it's national policy! In what world, in what circumstance, would that ever be okay? But you're acting like this is completely fine and normal. I guess it happens in the cruel, Alice-in-Wonderland, topsy turvy world of rainy, foggy TERF Islands.

There are many drugs that we limit time on because they can damage other organs in the long term. Benadryl for example may cause memory issues if used daily long term.
