On the 29th of May the great and unforgettable Erich Wolfgang Korngold would have turned 121 years old. I thought of maybe re-visit an already uploaded score (that I feel is kind of necessary, because of the lack of sound-, video- and mixing quality!). However, there was one score that is conducted by the composer that was not featured here, until now! "The Sea Wolf", featuring the fantastic Edward G. Robinson marks kind of the start of the upcoming film-noir years of Hollywood with a mysterious plot, all coated in thick fog, accompanied by a thrilling and often very eery and demanding music score, that stands out as the composers shortest and most dissonant of all his works for cinema. Just the "Love Theme" gives the entire plot some sort of harmonic base. The picture you see at the beginning of the video shows Erich Korngold with his father Julius, the famous music critic, who attended every Hollywood scoring session of his son, reading the score while Erich was conducting it. A take was generally approved, when the critic accepted his sons recording. But now: Enjoy!

I only saw this movie a few years ago, although I knew the music for most of my life. Like "Between Two Worlds" I so wanted to see the movie. I have not been disappointed with either. "The Sea Wolf" is mesmerizing and a poignant film. The cast, led by Edward G. Robinson, were all right there, a perfect ensemble. The film has a very intimate feel. I find that with a lot of movies made back then, that you really don't see today, especially when they do re-makes of them. And I don't think it's just the performances, but the music. Korngold's score for "The Sea Wolf," as with "Between Two Worlds." is so much a part of the human drama in these films.

Four-and-a-half minutes into the piece, you can hear material from his third string quartet, which I recommend with passion.

Thanks to you I have discovered many a wonderful soundtrack, Film Scores Monthly, and a delightful way of lowering my deposits in my bank account. I'm collecting. Many thanks for this wonderful score from Korngold.

This is one of my favorite scores that Korngold did.

A drama-psychological story by novelist, Jack London. Interesting. I may have seen the movie on TV as one of those TMC flicks but, I'm not sure. At least, Eddie G. Robinson was an actor who put "personality" in all his films. His style, timing, and unique voice made him a very popular actor to get in many of the more serious roles a script required.

In his autobiography "All My Yesterdays", EGR said that he hated making The Sea Wolf "which I did just for the money". Still, he gave 110% effort in all his films. Want to know what *HIS* personal favorite of all his films? It was "Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet", the true story of Dr. Paul Ehrlich, who discovered the fundamental "Side Chain Theory" to explain the immune response, and also the 1st medical cure for syphilis.
