Motobe is very much the Batman of Baki. His hand-to-hand skills are impressive, and he's definitely the most competent(and ONLY) weapon user, but his real strength is in his prep work; Motobe will bring swords, knives, bombs, poison, body armor, and everything else he can get away with carrying into a fight, with the exception of guns, and he's trained with all of them to an absurd degree. As for his fight with Yanagi, let me take a moment to break that down. When he says that Yanagi 'relies on things outside of his five senses', he's pointing out that Yanagi relies too heavily on tricks and flashy moves, like how he uses the speed at which he can swing his sickles to intimidate his opponents, much like those jackasses back at the start of season 1. He also points out that Yanagi relies too much on his Way of the Void, and he's neglected learning how to actually fight without relying on his one-hit kill moves or the debilitating effects they cause; his Whip of Mercury is supposed to be just be an excruciatingly painful slap, his vacuum palm knocks the opponent out in one shot, and his poison hand only requires a single touch to ensure a kill. In that sense, Motobe concedes that Yanagi should be stronger and more skilled than him given the level he's already at, but because Yanagi has learned to fight as a killer and as an assassin instead of a martial artist, he will inevitably lose if he's ever forced to fight straight-up, especially against someone like Motobe, who uses simpler and more reliable tricks, like throwing a sword at close-range to deliberately cripple his opponent's ability to move so he he can fight on his terms, and then taking advantage of the surprise and confusion to attack and debilitate them further. There's also a certain dichotomy to be had with these characters in that Motobe is basically everything Yanagi thought that he was; a warrior that fights with more than just his hands and isn't afraid to fight dirty or take cheap shots while still retaining a sense of honor/Bushido. There's also further contrasts in between the offensive Yanagi and the defensive Shibukawa, and how Motobe and Yujiro view fighting and victory, with Yujiro pointing out the clear flaws of a fight with no rules; if neither side admits defeat, then the fight can only be decided when it can no longer continue.

@@SleepySnaiI Retsu can use weapons and is highly skilled in their use, but he's primarily a hand-to-hand fighter, so he doesn't specialize in their use like Motobe does; this is why I say Motobe is the only weapon user in the group. Gaia is similar in that regard in that he's learned to use his environment as a weapon, but his skills are also apredominately hand-to-hand.

@@SleepySnaiI Motobe is actually kind of shit as a hand-to-hand combatant. Granted, he's still extremely skilled, but he's still well within the realms of normality, unlike Retsu, who can do shit like making a motorcycle explode with a shockwave, or Doppo, who can cut things with his bare hands. This is why KoL had such a low opinion of him, because he'd only demonstrated his relatively weak hand-to-hand skills. Motobe's specialty is fighting with weapons, and it's how he prefers to fight, whereas Retsu prefers hand-to-hand but is still very accomplished when using weapons in Shaolin martial arts, as he has trained in their various forms extensively on the path to martial arts mastery. This is why I regard Motobe as the only weapon user of the main cast, even though other characters like Retsu and Gaia use weapons of their own.

I like motobe as a fighter because He can easily be one of the strongest in the series with prep time enough to actually go toe to toe musashi. but at the same time, if he is jumped or is fought randomly he's probably not winning against other high tier characters.

@@ectomadman Motobe actually makes a point of saying that he's always on guard and there are very few times he relaxes in his daily routine. Like many characters in Baki, he expects to fight at any given moment, but he also openly admits that when he's eating, brushing his teeth, sleeping, or doing other civilian things he stops being in warrior mode. He even makes a point to Gaia that he considers his dojo a safe space, as there are rules he and everyone else must adhere to for safety's sake within the dojo that do not exist outside of it.
