Thanks for the help. I just stared taking Latin this year and its online so its nice to hear someone read it to you!

The five major cases (nom, gen, dat, acc, abl) make up about 98% of all forms in Latin. The vocative only about 2% (a majority of which forms are identical to the nominative), and the locative so minuscule an amount that it doesn't even register. The only reason why some are vocal about the vocative is that certain texts include it right away.

The vocative will be coming in its own video. Really, since the vocative is just atypical in second declension singular nouns, it can be left out and dealt with separately. I think that forms like the vocative and locative can be taught by just teaching the rules rather than by including them in the paradigms.

4:30 "deum" is the older of the two forms and the one we would expect (cf. Greek "θε-ῶν"). The GenPl "orum"-ending is more likely to have developed analogically to the female a-stem "arum"-ending.

This Latin tutorial project is really awesome. No doubt. Time to time, though, there are some topics worth discussing. In this video I'd personally choose a different word than "servus", or at least integrate the presentation. This word is actually one of the few who usually keep the ending -ŏs instead of changing it in -us up to the Empire.
@latintutorial9 жыл бұрын
+stefinlithuania Well, servus is a relatively common word for beginning Latin students, and it's taught in the standard, Augustan forms, and there's definitely no need to complicate in this video. I'd also be surprised if texts designed for intermediate students would incorporate the -os/-om forms, unless for Plautus/Terence plays where a whole lot of early forms are presented.
@stefinlithuania9 жыл бұрын
+latintutorial You are for sure telling the truth, but... I mean... there are plenty of 2nd declension nouns (dominus, tribunus, lupus if you don't want an inanimate). In any case (...) anglo-saxon Latin teaching methods are different from ours. That doesn't mean worse. Thanks.
@latintutorial9 жыл бұрын
+stefinlithuania Probably the best answer is that I made this video a long time ago, and if it were made today, I probably would have made different choices of words.

Also, missed the locative, but for a beginner, this is understandable. It's much better to have a firm grasp of what is encountered 80% of the time.

@latintutorial9 жыл бұрын
+Muhd Haziq Rohani I'm not sure what you're referring to. If it's the italic e, the font Hoefler Text has a different italic e within a word than at the end of the word (where the italic e stroke goes out for a while).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the syllabification of puer ir pu-er; therefore, the accent must fall on the first syllable (should be pronounced as púer-, instead of puér-), by the rules of accentuation, unless the word exceeds 3 syllables (or is changed by enclitics).

@latintutorial8 жыл бұрын
That's the video for the vocative. It's skipped in all of my declension videos because the vocative is always the same in form as the nominative except in masculine second declension singular forms. I found it best to not muddy the waters and go off on a long tangent describing the vocative case in this video, and instead go for consistency among all of my declension videos, while providing a full and complete discussion of the vocative case in a separate video.
