I hated sudoku as a child and adolescent, and have never once been interested in it in my entire life. I worked on the puzzle as much as I could, watching your video and pausing once I was able to continue. Solving essentially alongside you so I could get a grasp on how to find the solution for this. That was an amazing experience and I've never felt so happy doing a Sudoku puzzle. I'm going to look around online for beginner Sudoku puzzles. This is an excellent way for me to spend my time during Quarantine. I have no idea how I found this video, but the youtube algorithm has dragged me here and I can't thank you enough for providing such a relaxing experience. You've single-handedly inspired me, and probably many others, to learn how to solve Sudoku puzzles, and I want to let you know that I value the experience this video left me with, and that I aim to be able to engage more in future content. Thanks so much Mark.
@guruhoro4 жыл бұрын
Took me 51 minutes and 59 seconds... But I finally completed one of these without checking the video for clues! I wouldn't have been able to if not for watching this channel for a dozen or so hours. I always tried solving with you, pausing after the puzzle rules explanation, and I think something finally stuck. I find it fascinating how much easier it is to think about these puzzles when I have names for things like "triples" or "x-wings". I was able to spot some of the common patterns before having names for them, biut naming them helps remember where I saw them and speeds up my thinking.

When I try to fill possible values for cells in a thermometer I like to (starting at the bulb), put in just the minimum value the cell could be and continue doing that all the way up the thermometer. Then I put in the maximum value (starting at the other end) and continue all the way down. Afterward, I fill in the in-between numbers if there are any. It's fairly quick and I'm surprised Simon doesn't do it this way.

At 22:42 you can solve that thermometer pretty easily at that point because the 6 cannot be at the end of the thermometer, meaning you can't have 1 be at the start, which unravels the rest of the thermometer. I've never even solved these kind of hard sudokus before so I was kinda proud when I saw that.

I got the 4,6 at the end by looking at the bulb. If the bulb is not 1, then the rest of the thermo is 5,6,7,8,9; if it is 1, then r5c5 is 1 -> 2 in r5c4 -> 3 in bulb at r9c4 -> 4 in the next thermo cell, seeing the 4,6 square. In either case, the last 4 digits of that thermo are 6,7,8,9

Nice one. Got stuck twice and had to look at the video (678 in col 1 and the trick in r8c7)... Simon frustrates me with how long he takes to do the thermometers though :) I started with them and had them all restricted to 2-3 digits in about 80 seconds (13 to 2 digits, 11 to 3). Simon was 17 minutes in before starting the 3rd thermometer and over 20 minutes in before really looking at the 4th...

1h20m. I had a hard time eliminating the 5 at the bottom on the thermo at the start. After 40 minutes I started over and that time I finished it. There was another contradiction aside from triples. For example, on the left, if you put a 5 on the bottom left thermo, both 3 and 4 would need to go into a single cell in column 1 in the box above which is impossible. Same trick happened on the right side.
