Lol this! I love how we probably never considered that a studio musician could’ve ever been a thing on these types of “band” songs. We did it once in my band and there was so much resentment happening in the room over the “Livin La Vida Loca” guy.

I got to meet Tim once at Norman's Rare Guitars a few years ago. He was standing right behind me and said he what I was playing sounded really pretty. It took me a second to realize it was him and said "Holy shit, you're Tim Pierce. Oh my god, thank you!" He gave me that signature smile and giggled. Lifted my spirits for a month and each time I think about it.

He did a wonderful job (especially on the track that was in 11 - alternating 6 and 5 - here in case you are insterested kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6SngWx6pdWgiNk) and made me wish that session players were acknowledged - without being mobbed ;) - more. Exactly! We were listening to a playback of a song and I had to tweak something in the drums for a moment and the guitar player was like "That's what you're playing?" Referring to a bit in the song which is a bluesy shuffle but I throw in a triplet on the hi-hats every now and then. I said yeah and showed him... Basically it's just a double on half open hats with a swift stomp on the pedal to get that third one in... It does'nt look like much but it sounds sweet and it's all smoke and mirrors!!

This video just shows how good and sensible Tim Pierce as session musician and guitarist. He plays for the song and he considers his client (Goo Goo Dolls) reputation.👍 I perfectly and fully understand were he's comming from, choosing a "slide" solo instead of shredding is really cool to be honest, it's perfect for that song. Because based on a guitarist perspective and as a shredder who love's guitar centric stuff (Malmsteen, Metallica, Megadeth)....shredding is realy a big deal for the guitarists ego😁, Mr. Pierce is right. And thanks that it solved the mystery of "Iris"- its a puzzle for us guitarists even for the shredders for decades, never knew it's a mandolin and the open tuning "BDDDDD" rocks!..sounds like 4 guitars, all of us are playing it "wrong". Some play the intro in Standard (Bm-A-G-Em) with fills, while others play it in Standard Octave. It's actually more mysterious than figuring out a solo on shreddy song parts. So Cheers on this Video. SUBSCRIBED!🙂

I love how this song was made for a movie no one involved had seen yet, and this combo of weirdly-tuned guitar and mandolin perfectly represented the themes of humanity and divinity in call and answer. And it was all kind of made up.

Thanks to being a fan of Rick Beato's channel I was introduced to Tim. I had the impression that he was "just" a friend of Rick's that he enjoyed discussing guitar with. I've since learned that Tim is a major heavyweight in the guitar world. "Orchestrating guitar parts" is a great description of the work he does. Such a talent to be able to come in cold and improvise parts that bring an already good song to a whole new level is magic, and Tim has it....and to be so humble...no wonder why he's as successful as he is.

That's because he's a studio musician- you can't expect to work as a studio musician if you continually try to be the star of the album. Your job is to disappear and let the band take the credit- and to never play anything that takes the focus off them and their song. Egos in music are unbelievably high and fragile- if you come in and blow the band away- you're going to start a huge problem and probably be let go. You have to figure out how to create something iconic while at the same time- not bruising their ego or making them feel like you're better than they are and are going to steal the spotlight.

Wow, he’s a musical genius. That slide solo, nothing else would have fit the story the song was telling like that slide solo. But I don’t know how many musicians would have realized it in an instant like he did. The build up and to come up with that solo, holding on like he does nothing else would have worked. But I don’t think in a million years I would think such a big build up would go to something like that. He just amazes me, and he’s just such a nice guy too.

Also, this is one of the best song breakdowns on youtube. The way that Jack and Ryan's questions/input reveals SO much about the songwriting process. Specifically how Ryan pointed out that "oh he was using the same chords over and over again in his demo" to really show just how much a basic song can transform in the studio with the right people playing the right thing, at the right time. That's where the magic happens.

The reason I love Tim's playing, is because instead of laying on his prowess as a guitar player, which he most certainly has, he aims to do the song justice, whatever that happens to be. He latches onto the emotional value and carries it forward. That takes much more than playing skill, but the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes and feel what they are feeling. I have heard more than once already that he added the missing pieces the artist he was working for couldn't quite hit on the head, and nailed it in one take.

A musician’s musician! I wish I’d realised earlier that it’s not about how fast or how much you can play but what can you leave out to emphasise the emotional core of the song. That’s what connects with people and what turns a fairly basic composition into a classic song.

Love this! You guys really connect on this. Please have Tim back on. He’s got some great stories he shared with Rick Beato! Tim is great musician and certainly a cool guy to hang and talk about the good old days. Many funny stories.

"Did you know it was a hit at the time" No! Great musicians just know how to serve the song. When Phil is asked about 'In the Air Tonight' and his drum fill, he says he did not say "WOW. That is it!" The one they used could have been one of several. So interesting that so much of the greatest music is some how serendipitous. Very cool. Of course it is clear you must know what the hell you are doing and be phenomenally good for this stuff 'to just happen'. And Tim is all the above.

I love how humble and down to earth Tim is. The man is a freaking legend among studio musicians. It's amazing how many things he has put his touch on, many of them become the melodic hook of the entire tune.

Incredibly engaging clip. The big plus point is that Tim Pierce being an experienced KZbinr he comes across so well. His speaking style - even the gaps - are measured and not wasted. Loved it!

I didn’t like most ‘90s music, but this song has always stood out. It has aged incredibly well. The mandolin part is classic.
