When I was eight my mother died in Venice and books become my escape from sorrow. “Il giardino segreto” was my favorite. I never read it again not to spoil its “magic”. I was adopted at age 5 by awful people and used this book as an escape after finding a copy at my adopted grandparents house when I was around 10/11, I made it out at 14 and thought I'd never be able to face this story again because although it helped me through a hard time I feared that it could be trigger bad memories. With the eyes free to wander, the mind would soon follow. I found you in the Secret Garden when I decided to try a childhood favourite( I will turn 70 in a month). What a delicious voice and Yorkshire accent! Your reading has been both entertaining as well as calming. I haven't been able to drag myself away, just as I couldnt put the book down as a child. The gentle voice and wonderful Yorkshire lilt make this reading of the classic truly outstanding. As a child, my mother read to me daily; fairy tales, poems and other stories as I aged. When she went blind, I read to her for many years and then to my children and they in turn to theirs. It is a wonderful respite from today's noise and overstimulation. You have the gift of a gentle voice and sympathetic style which simply adds to the magic of storytelling. Bravo, bravo, bravissimo!

Hello, Mr. Garnett. I am a commercial driver from Greenville, South Carolina. I felt obliged to offer a quick story of how i am enjoying your work. 2 weeks ago i discovered you. I have enjoyed your LOTHR so much & am anxiously awaiting chapter 7. In the meantime, i have started TSG & have once again been swept away. Much of my time is spent on the Interstate 85 between Greenville & Charlotte, North Carolina, and your story telling has revolutionized my work day. As a trucker I have a luxury of not having to be in a particular hurry to my destination each day- there's plenty of time... so, i put in my noise canceling earbuds & am transported, myself, away. I just maneuver into the slow lane, set my speed to slower than the traffic in front of me, and just ride & enjoy. 🙂 Im just to the part where Dickens has left Mary the note in the rose, after her just being granted her ground... such a lovely story & it somehow makes me feel closer to my grandmother, and her love of flowers. Thank you again for your work, i so enjoy it. I am telling friends & family about you, i have subscribed to your channel (my first, and because you ask), and i will soon do my small part on Patreon to help continue your most valuable work. 👍🎶✌

I discovered this video shortly after finding a severely neglected courtyard at the memory care facility I work at. I’ve been working in it every day to make it beautiful for residents and families to enjoy again. Tomatoes, pumpkins, forget me nots, flowers and basil too. I’ve always wanted a garden but I’d never had the time or space… my co workers and residents have all pitched in to help, and I see more people going outside to enjoy it as each day passes. All this as I have listened to this book for the first time. It is a beautiful thing.

Thanks KB! I think this was mainly down to the way I approached reading this book. As I mention in the video description I originally posted this on a former channel of mine as a series of generally 2-chapter episodes called "Raw Reading". I also chatted before, after and a little inbetween, so the comments are snipped extracts from my mid-chapter chats haha! Editing was minimal in comparison to my more polished audiobooks and I read from the book rather than using a pdf on my laptop. Athough this isn't as smooth for narration, I wanted to embrace the feeling of being read to, page turning sounds and all! My reading of Dracula has a similar feeling as well as my live readings on my Red Fox Book Club livestreams of course. Do you think I should try this style more often?
@KB-tg7pf

@@redfoxvoice Yes, definitely try this style more often. I've never heard anyone else do it before. The sound of the pages turning and everything about it is very relaxing. It reminds me of the time there was an ice storm and we huddled around the fireplace reading Secret Garden and Little Princess for 10 days. Good memories. ♡

Thank you so much, Mr. Garnett! I am 66 yrs old & home with 3 chronic pain diseases - mostly bed ridden, but I'm trying to move as much as possible to keep muscle tone. The worse part of it all is that I can't sleep! I don't get more than 2-3 hours a night when I sleep at all and I know that it makes me feel worse. Finally, I found out that my habit of watching youtube at night might be contributing to my sleeplessness - so finally I started looking for audio-books, stories to put me to sleep. Yours is the first I've found and it's a story I'm familiar with & enjoy. Your reading & voice are so comforting - I listen in order to fall asleep. The first night I tried it, I got 7 hours of sleep!! I felt like a new woman! Thank you SO very much for posting these! They seem to be a miracle for me!! I'm so grateful to you, to have them to listen to! If I had any money, I'd become a patron - but I can assure you that if things get better $wise, I'll do just that. I send you many hugs in friendship, much gratitude and my very best wishes for happiness in your life. 💚

Thank you so much for your narrative of this beautiful classic story. I’m 80 years old (but don’t tell anyone) and had never read this story before but had heard snippets and even seen a clip on tv a one stage so when I happened to come across this audio version I was curious enough to listen. This is the first audio book I’ve ever listened to and I was again curious and interested enough at first to finally hear the story. With your clear narrative and genuine enjoyment yourself of the story you quickly had me listening. I loved the way you became part of the story itself with your little comments at the end of each chapter and added to my enjoyment of the whole simple story. I’ve been a reader of books all my life so it was a new experience to actually listen to a story being read. I’ve read stories to my children and other people’s children as well. For myself I’ve read all kinds of books and can quickly lose myself in their pages and loved the feel of the pages between my fingers. I always thought there was nothing like holding a real book in my hands and never expected to read a book on line on a device and never expected to listen to an audio version. Recently I discovered the uTube app and a new world opened up for me. I saw the audio versions of the classics and even listened to a chapter of a couple but didn’t become engaged with them but from the minute your voice began I was there in the story with you. So I really do thank you for your interpretation and hope I can find other stories that you may have done. I don’t think you would class me as an ‘average’ 80 year old as I have many interests and hobbies and live a full and active life. My husband and I Retired to a rural township now in the north of the North Island of NZ for the past 6 years from city life in Auckland but born in England and came to NZ in 1960. I’m a keen Facebook fan and keep in touch with all my friends and family this way. My elderly Aunt is coming up to 93 years and even she keeps in touch with me daily on Facebook messenger! I’ll have to tell her about your version of this story! I do hope I can find other stories you may have done! You’ve got a new fan now haha! Thank you again. Best wishes to you from Erica Sabbage, Maungaturoto, Northland, NZ 18.11.2020.

If you would like a full library of all my work then please do consider joining me on Patreon, and I also have a couple of professional audiobooks on Audible/iTunes :) A Little Princess and Dracula have both been considered and could be great! The next public domain book I'll be starting (once I finish Alice in Wonderland) will be The Phantom of the Opera, commissioned by one of patrons. Hopefully that'll provide a little bit of a Halloween vibe!

I've been suffering from skin allergies since the past year and I was feeling very miserable lately. Almost suicidal because nothing I did worked. Then I remembered about Mary and Colin and Dickon and thought this story would help me get rid of the anxiety at least. (My therapist thinks it might be psychosomatic). And I swear this helped me relax so much, I've been listening every night for the past few days and been sleeping like a newborn piglet.

And I had seen it as a television presentation twice… I think the first time was that was seven or eight years old… I am 71 now… It takes me away from my every day life and colors my world until I finish it and even after for a while… It’s filled with promise … The promise that magic is real and you just have to reach out and grab it… I have never heard it is complete a form as this however … I think your voice is perfect… You read it perfectly and the dance of the flowers by Tchaikovsky was a wonderful way of separating the chapters… I can’t think of a thing you should change… Perfection! Splendid. My little girl had vision problems but this was her favorite story. She listened to it over and over. Now, with my own vision fading, I am listening over and over as well. Your narration takes me me to the “ Secret Garden” I can almost smell the flowers, the grass and hear the Robins. I felt as though the garden was truly alive and I was present in each moment. I started out listening with a bit of a trepidation and feared it would make me sad. I need not have though. In my mind It brought my little one back in my arms as though she still draws breath. I found myself smiling often. Perhaps she just awaits me in the garden! Very well read! Thank you! Lovely.

I’ve been listening to short stories for the language sake. Russian is my mother tong. So one day I came across The Secret Garden video for the kids. And everything that is of a secret sort attracts and intrigues me. So I watched and listen, but there were only 11 or so chapters. By that time I was really interested to learn the whole story. Upon some search I found this audiobook and started listening from the very beginning. It was a bit more challenging since it’s an unabridged version, and Yorkshire English… at times I could make it out, but there were parts where I wished for the subtitles or the text. I loved your soft and gentle narration. The stile of it did change with time but I couldn’t grasp it since I was too consumed with the story. I loved it. There is magic in it 😊 Thank you so much. And your comments, and page turnings, and the rain sounds made the listening extra special and touched the heart with friendliness.

This is a wonderful find for me! ...never listened to an audio book before..the secret garden was my favourite book as a child, a very big reader, still am..and i had a lovely old hardback copy with beautiful illustrations..when i was about 10, i took it with me on a family holiday..and after coming home, found i'd lost it somewhere along the way...by that time i had another copy with the little princess in it as well..but it was never quite the same...then on my 30th birthday, my father, who was quite gruff, not one to be soppy or show much emotion, gave me a beautiful Folio Society copy of it...with the same illustrations as in my old, lost one!..it's always been such a treasured possession ..i was so touched he'd remembered me losing it all those years before..so hearing it again makes me think not only of him, long gone now, but my childhood, and other childhood books i loved. There are still whole passages that l know almost by heart and its decades since i've read it..your voice is so perfect, so gentle and calming..thank you so much for your hard work and dedication..
