You are so together on this and you've seen the common denominator. Speaker manufacturers also reference to pink noise and so do mastering engineers. This is why a correctly mastered track translates properly to a whole range of speakers without any wild frequency excursions. Pindrop mixing isn't helpful because the low end disappears. It only helps to generally get the vocal more prominent, as a general rule of thumb only! I puzzled for a very long time about why professionally mastered tracks sound great on anything. The Secret is in the pink noise reference and then fine tuning the low end etc.

This is a GREAT lesson on Frequency Analysis, Fletcher Munson curves and the benefits of "Pink Noise Mixing"!!! _But if I might add something?_ One must first understand two things. First, I've seen a few people doing it _wrong_ and then denouncing the method as a result of their own failure. This technique _must_ be done with _ears_ and with _actual_ pink noise. _Not_ by looking at a response on a graph. You need to _hear_ what's going on. A blind person can literally perform this task without being disadvantaged in any way by their being blind. Second, one must understand the reason _why_ they're using this technique to begin with. And I think your video explained that very well: _the frequency response of Pink Noise is similar to human hearing._ But's important to remember that the Pink Noise _Mixing_ technique is not a _Mastering_ technique; _it is a method of Gain-Staging_ Once we've properly _gain-staged_ all of our tracks using Pink-Noise (as a reference,) _then_ we can make any final decisions about the mix, using _only our ears._ And once we've finished working on the Song, whoever Masters may choose to do some light Pink-Noise referencing as well. *To reiterate (or TL;DR):* *1.) Pink Noise Mixing Must be done by ear.* *2.) Pink Noise Mixing is best used as a **_reference tool_** used for **_Gain-Staging_** the* *individual sounds in your **_Mix._*

Very good video presentation. What is the 6dB method you mentioned towards the end? I've not heard of it before. Could you make a video of that please. Thank you. Subbed!
@Unders
@Unders 2 жыл бұрын
Simple. im referring to a 6db per octave slope. Just like you can find on your EQ in most cases. That slope is pretty close to how we like to hear.
@andymartin2805
@andymartin2805 2 жыл бұрын
@@Unders Thanks for your reply. Pink noise has a logarithmic slope per octave so perhaps that is also worth looking into. A lot of people are utilising pink noise and it is very similar to the way we hear, re' energy per octave. You can see the signatory trace when comparing commercially mastered tracks. Very relevant and very revealing!

So if im understanding this, which im unsure that I am... You're saying the Fletcher munson curve basically goes to show/say that it takes more pressure/volume to hear lower frequencies and less pressure/volume to hear higher frequencies well. That being said you should roll off the higher end of the spectrum on the master mix just slightly while keeping the lower end more dynamic?... Sorry if thats all botched, I watched the video multiple times trying to understand..
@Unders
@Unders 6 жыл бұрын
+Mitch S well it's all depending on your audio. But essentially we find pink noise a pleasing balance which sits comfortably in the fletcher Munson curves. So yes the lower the frequency the more room needed for us to hear it, it's why a sub bass always seems to completely fill your headroom

I can get it pretty damn loud comfortably, however youtube does add quite a bit of noise to the recording when its compressed and encoded.

So many words about matching your audio to pink noise WITH 10% AMOUNT. You will probably hear no difference at all, try at least 50% or more to get an effect.
@Unders
@Unders 6 жыл бұрын
Detlef Kroll what are you talking about? There’s nothing about 10% amount. And even minor changes in dB will make a difference. I don’t even explain pink noise until the last 1/4 of the video...
