In 1990 my Dad brought this home from his job at Radio Shack. He booted it up and blew my mind. I still can hear my Dad's voice as he read the parts of the lookout, Guybrush, and the Pirate Leaders. Everything in my third grade life suddenly revolved around Monkey Island. My dolls were named after characters. When I played school, I gave assignments from the hint book. I went as Elaine for Halloween. On the playground, I got in trouble for using Sword Master insults on other kids. I daydreamed that Carla was my mom and I was part of a sword fighting legacy. This game is such a HUGE part of me. At the time it came out, we lived in poor, rural West Virginia. No one had a home computer and my family did only because of my Dad's job. No other kids had it, so I took it upon my self to preach the good news that Monkey Island existed. Almost 30 years later, I'm still in love with it. Sorry for the life story. LOL. Awesome memories. It was also a nice and charming part of my childhood, I remember playing it on summer, 1990 or 1991, and going to my friend's pool with the instructions book, lying in the grass reading it. I loved Loom too, and Indy and the Last Crusade.

I wish they would've fleshed out Guybrush's ship crew, particularly the dude with the talking tattoo and his fear of parrots. That ship part seemed rushed and irrelevant considering the amount of time it took to gather the whole crew together.

Actually, you can't do this. That only works in Monkey Island 2 Special Edition. This is a fan patch called ultimate edition that combines the voice action with the original version.

I loved this game sooo much! Amazing beautiful music, fun puzzles, brilliant humour and characters (many very funny sarcastic ones). No game quite like it, never will be to me. All the wierd folks guy meets, its like when he looks at the screen (to you), you are in on the joke with him. I don't know a game that had done that then. Also when you pick some insult to say to somebody, he somet8mes says something else instead, as he is thinking something that he knows not to say, and that is so relatable lol! I had not seen that before in a game either 😆 That cheesy sailsman with the big teeth...lol..."..but wait!.....there's more!"

I just tried to install this talkie version downloading talkie version through gratissaugen.de/. This talkie version is supposed to be installed with the folder containing the file monkey1.pak which is supposed to be GB large. On this version of Monkey Island folder is only 5MB. Are there two talkie versions out there?

Yeah, Monkey1.pak should be a bit over a GB. I confirmed with both versions I have. Where did you buy your copy of Special Edition from?

The Ultimate Talkie patch is built from Special Edition - that's where it extracts the voices from. You can't build Ultimate Talkie without it. I recommend getting the version from GOG.com

Ultimate talkie will work on DOS, yes. Though I've not tried it personally. The build tool to create UTE requires Windows, however.

Is there a version of the game with the CD graphics + MT32 music + special edition speech & ambient sound effects? That would be my ultimate version. (Well, the true "ultimate version" would be the Special Edition with the original character designs.)

You could run through the special edition creation steps and then afterwards replace the audio-tracks with recordings of the MT-32 versions.

To replace them, you mean? This is possible (Ultimate Talkie adds the dog close-up.) But this would require manipulation of the data files which is beyond my knowledge. Curious to know how you got the subtitles to show up. For me, and most other videos I've seen, either the subtitles are in German (I think) or don't appear at all.

1. I am using ScummVM and 2. I am using the ultimate talkie edition patch. (See video description for a link.) 3. I patched the english version. Assuming you are doing the same, just set subtitles to show in ScummVM.

Ahh, I was hoping to get the subtitles in DOS, but I tried ScummVM as well. I didn't know to set Text and Speech under the Audio tab to Both. Now that I've done that, I've got subtitles and voiceovers! Thanks for the quick reply! (Maybe I can figure out some way to get subs in DOS version now)

Try ctrl+t, I think that's what it was for Sam & Max Hit The Road. But the option may simply not exist in the DOS version. Since that engine was never intended for talkie playback in the first place, they would have presumably would have had to add the option with the patch.

You can toggle the narrator with ultimate edition. Might be on by default. Not sure. And yes, in theory you could run the DOS version on any old PC capable of running talkie Fate of Atlantis!

You are misrembering. The CD version introduced a CD soundtrack but that's it. The first voiced game was Curse of Monkey Island. They bought the voice actors back to record dialogue for the remasters but this was way after the fourth game was released.

It was a bad mistake of you to not include the narrator. Also, should have included more dialouge, like talking to Mancomb Seepgood, Estevan and the Loom Guy (AKA Cobb) and so on. It's a shame that Ron Gilbert and the guys didn't thought of doing a talkie version for classic mode in Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition, like they did in LeChuck's Revenge Special Edition. They could have had it as a DC add-on. Such a wasted opporturinty!

I have an improved playthrough that includes the narrator and some more of the dialogues: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXTZl4Ooja2Dias I don't tend to include the "dead-end" dialogue (stuff that isn't directly relevant to the story or solving a puzzle) that just my style. I think it makes a more streamlined and focused video. If you prefer more verbose videos, I recommend "World of Longplays" there are some quality videos on that channel.

I like the voice-overs. Even though I completed the games as a kid, long before the voice-overs were even recorded, I can't really imagine the games without them now. (Though I do prefer the original graphics to the new special edition graphics.) But each to his own!
