I have a staff member that needs to hear this tomorrow. We had a conversation that came close to this where they said “I don’t know why anyone would care what I think, it’s not like I’m anything special.” They’re getting this for sure... 👊🏿🧔🏾

Yo, that hit me hard. I like that, very philosophical. That was deep. Circa 1999, in my 20s, I saw Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden proclaim: "You are not a unique snowflake." I think many of us came to believe uniqueness is soft, at a certain personal cost, including sacrificing personal style.

In the beginning I found my taste was all over the place. Love that look, love this look and that one! So a lot of my pieces came from lots of different vibes. Lacked cohesion. Once I matured, got a bit older, like you said, I developed intentionality, and now my style has become about putting together the opposite which seemingly don't belong. Current obsession, tech wear fused w/ rural timeless classics (aka stylish workwear or like the farmer who read GQ 😂)

I always want to hate on Uniqlo but it’s really a boon for fashion heads. Needed a low key thicker sweater, with no pattern, and after hitting two departo, drop in and boom. Fleece cardigan for 30 and looks great with different styles. H&M I can’t do though...

This is a great topic. Especially when you talked about your wardrobe as a tool and your style as the art. I feel like I’ve been, to some extent, unintentionally intentional with building archetypal/recurring themes throughout my fits. Either way, having a variety of different pieces that all fit the general aesthetic of “me” makes building outfits and adding new elements that much more satisfying.

Hi Reggie, I have been following your videos on and off once in awhile, I want to say that the content you provide is very thoughtful, insightful and of benefit. I rarely even leave comments. What you brought up in this video really places emphasis on what separates on having confidence [but lack of style] and having a unique style or rather, a defined style. I would also like to add that previous videos or some vids from long ago, touching on topics which are controversial [e.g something something west or white] are food for thought for your viewers or the people that might stumble across those videos. I conclude by saying that keep up the good work and content [researching, exploring, comparing, keeping an open mind, which i know u have] and spreading the knowledge. The thoughts that i keep to myself and feel about, you share it for all to see and think about.

I was thinking about the same thing a while ago. The thought process and the complete knowingness of a part of an outfit is often overlooked. Maybe that “ugly” outfit was meant to be ugly and maybe those shoes that do not (or do) perfectly match the colour of something else in your outfit were intended to be that way. Just intentionality repeated over time can say so much about a persons style or more so, personality.

I think I understand somehow what you were trying to say but if you allways make little changes, could it not happen that after a while you are stuck in a surton style? For example i allways wear skinny jeans mostly in black, pullovers and/or just big tshirts (if its to hot). Some while ago i found really nice looking baggy pants online that i really would like to wear but now that im in my surton style the baggy pants would destroy it alltough they look very nice.

I think I have reached a point where I really know exactly what look I'm interested in, but it doesn't have that effortless feeling. I have several friends with impeccable taste in clothes, most often thrifted vintage items, who seem to be able to create perfectly harmonious and well-thought-out looks using any permutation of their wardrobe. I envy that effortless quality. I'm curious to hear peoples' opinions. Is it bad to have clashing pieces in one's wardrobe that really would never look good worn together, or is having a little variety good? I like a little variety, but inconsistency drives me crazy.
@sebastianedwards8666
@sebastianedwards8666 5 жыл бұрын
Variety is good, but every piece has to have some kind of look that it goes with. You don't need to go in for the same kind of look every day, but every look should work on its own merits. Having a completely mix & matchable wardrobe is impressive, but it's impressive in part because it's an exercise in navigating some pretty steep limits. It's a really specific way of choosing your collection. You're not obliged to limit yourself in that way, but if you want to then I'd recommend pulling out your sketchbook & laying out some ideas you want to move your style towards.

Word. Sketching is a good idea, surprised I never considered sketching out possible fits with my existing wardrobe instead of just imagining entirely new pieces. Maybe it's a side-effect of being an artist, but I definitely get too hung up on consistency and maintaining a particular aesthetic.

I believe you just totally ignored or misinterpreted the question. The question was: "I don't want to stand out, do you have any tips?" You basically made a video about how amazing it is to be unique, and how to achieve a coherent, intentional look for people to notice. The whole idea was to express less character, to NOT get noticed. Not everyone wants to stand out, but a lot of people can't conceive that.
@THECASUALco
@THECASUALco 5 жыл бұрын
The REASON for making the episode was due to the question, not to answer the question directly. "Prompted" doesn't mean "answer". As such I made a video about those that don't want to be incredibly risque with style. The simple guy is often ignored. Why not give him or her a reason to care? We use words like modest, simple, and detail to invoke a sense of intentionality. People notice intention and the only way to remain unassuming in those circumstances, or a wall flower so to speak, is to remain the same person characteristically even after the fact. The brands listed were modest but simple, with little to no braggadocio. Brands that care more about the individuals taste than trying to impress. You can't teach a wall flower to remain a wall flower. But you can teach them how to feel better about what they're wearing. Why not address them with detail and what makes them unique? In short, I didn't misinterpret, I expanded on simplicity. Which is usually the angle for the guy who wants something more simple and refined to his character. I only hope I provided that in some way. But if you feel I didn't then who am I to say you're wrong? Your opinion is as valid as the points raised in the video. So where does that leave us? Nowhere really. It's inconsequential. You'll forget about this convo in the next few minutes after reading this. If you do at all.😉 ~Reggie

I think people confuse unique-ness with being interesting. There are definitely un-interesting and plain people out there (most people in fact). People with no opinions (or under-informed opinions), people with no sense of individuality, people with no interests/hobbies/passions other than the basics (food, tv/movies, hanging out w/friends, etc.), and people who don't know how to tell stories about their life. I could go on forever. Uniqueness just means no one is exactly like you; it says nothing about how interesting you are. You can leverage your uniqueness to become interesting, but most people are so satisfied being comfortable that they never do.
