I can't tell you just how much I enjoy your videos. Always so full of content and very very interesting. Thank you so much for sharing with us. I have been visiting that Tower since I was 16 years old and didn't know anything of the history around it.

A lovely mix of history genres James, and you are the go to chap for that hole area. I see there are a few more mature trees on that site as well, so checking the canopy for significant historical damage might also help narrow the search for the crash site.

Thank you for watching-As you state I need to look at the canopy but after 80 or so years and much new planting in the area -Must re-visit in the winter I think that will reveal much more 👍👍

Just down the lane from Jack's Castle stood an old Farmhouse until it was demolished last year😠 John Downs and his brother William grew up there and they told me they remembered playing in a different pair of Lodges as boys, (would have been the early 1960's) this pair was situated opposite the farm which as just down the lane from the tower on the right, so the lodges were on the left opposite, you can see the remains if you poke around in the undergrowth. R.I.P the Downs Brothers.

Can you confirm if this building is in Somerset or Wilshire as I hear conflicting story's on what is right !
@jameswalksinhistory3848 Жыл бұрын
If you look at the county boundary on a map it is Somerset ,The plague Stone is in Wiltshire as the border goes up the road at 90 degrees after the stone then turns sharply right about 50 ft up the road . The tower is around 30ft from the border so unfortunately it must be in Somerset ☹☹

I'm local to there and I have heard from many sources that it was built on the boundary of 3 counties, Wiltshire, Dorset & Somerset, hence the 3 sided build, one overlooking each county. I have looked at the 1610 maps by John Speed (I have later reproductions) and this would appear to be true given that the boundaries were rearranged in the early 1980's and maybe again before that.

@@jameswalksinhistory3848 Hello James, I am really enjoying your uploads. The British boundaries were rearranged in the 80's if you remember? I do!! I have John Speed 1610 repro maps and it appears the tower was built on the boundary of the three counties as they were then, hence the three sides to the structure, each overlooking a different county. This ties in with local hearsay.

What happened to Alfred's Tower?
@jameswalksinhistory3848 Жыл бұрын
Alfred's tower -The environment provides many clues to the location of the build and the area around the tower is packed full of history. The plane crash caused damage which was repaired and the turret replaced in 1975
