Finishing powder is a product that I think everyone needs. This probably sounds picky or snarky, but I’ve refused to have my makeup applied by an MUA who doesn’t use finishing powder. That’s how important it is to me. I discovered its importance when I was studying makeup application for film and photography in general. It can make a huge difference.

Charlotte Tilbury is still my favorite finishing powder, but a more budget friendly option is NYX Can't Stop Won't Stop Mattifying Powder. Even though it says "mattifying", it's actually a more natural, almost satiny finish but without shine. After spending a lifetime with oily skin, I just can't bring myself to use any of those "shiny" powders. I tried, but they make me want to blot my skin almost immediately, LOL!

This is the Best. Tip. Ever! I’m 56 and almost always use a finishing powder (and you were actually the one who taught me the difference between setting and finishing powders years ago!) I think you nailed it. The older I get the more finishing powder helps me!! It’s the secret to a more blurred look (and helps tone down my blush which I tend to over apply! 😂) Plus, I still have oily/combo skin and must set with a matte powder, but I can use finishing powder to bring more radiance back to my face. The MAC is my favorite, too, but I also do okay with Hourglass, and Chantecaille.

How can I tell if a powder is a “setting powder” or a “finishing powder” I don’t think I’ve ever seen a powder that was specifically called a finishing powder. What makes a powder a finishing powder as opposed to a setting powder? Is it more finely milled? This sounds like EXACTLY what I’ve been needing after my skin changed for the worse (thanks to the good old menopause! My skin now seems more “crepey” and my pores are much more pronounced)with age, but I’m in the U.K. and I’m not convinced I’m going to be able to find one 🤦🏻‍♀️ help!!

Hi! Some are loose and some are pressed. I gave several examples in the video 🤩 One of my examples was actually a loose powder. Bare Minerals Mineral Veil is also loose. Most powders will say finishing powder. Most HD powders are finishing powders and powders that have a glow to them are used as finishing powders. Though some finishing powders do have a soft matte finish rather than a glow. But setting powders state that they're setting powders. I hope that clarified a bit!

It does help my makeup last longer than it would if I didn't do it, but for truly bulletproof makeup that lasts a really long time, I do use setting spray.

Do you have to set your face before using finishing powder? I just don’t want to use double powder because I have dry skin, but I love the look the Charlotte tilbury and hourglass give

No some are blotting or mattifying/setting powders. Powder foundations have too much coverage.

In what order would you use setting spray ? Before or after the finishing powder?

Hi! I usually apply setting spray after I'm completely finished because I want my makeup set in like that. But experiment to see what you like best. You may prefer to do setting spray and then follow with finishing powder :)

Do you have any tricks for texture and dryness? I have Melasma and am currently on Hydroquinone. It's causing slight peeling, which is making my makeup look terrible. I use hydrating essence, a nice barrier supportive moisturizer and the P. Calm sunscreen you recommended. It helps, but the moment I put foundation on, you can see every bit of the peeling😢
@StephanieMarie
@StephanieMarie 14 күн бұрын
I'm not sure how often you're using it, but it's usually best to start out using products like that 1-2x a week to build your skin tolerance up, then add a day as tolerated, and so on. That helps minimize peeling and dryness. You may want to try backing off your usage a bit until your skin is fully adjusted. You could also try adding a bit of facial oil (maracuja, marula, rose hip or something else) into your facial moisturizer or topping your moisturizer with it.

Im 55 with combo oily T with texture (pores and fine lines). I try to avoid layering powders (bothe setting and finishing) cuz my oils create cakiness. So which should i choose?
@StephanieMarie

I'm 48 and also have oily/combo skin and find the MAC I demo'ed with to be smoothing and non-cakey and to have the right amount of luminosity. Everyone is different. But that's the one I like.

I'll be interested in your video on powders. I find it confusing between Finishing, Setting, Blotting, etc. And why wouldn't I just use the Givenchy, if it can be used for Setting and Finishing? One product for both.
@StephanieMarie
@StephanieMarie 12 күн бұрын
You can use that one for both absolutely. Some setting powders aren't made for finishing because they're too thick and matte. But that one isn't :)

Setting powder is applied to set foundation, concealer, creams and liquids. You apply it after those. Then you apply other powder color products. After you're finished with ALL of you're makeup, the final step is finishing powder. It's polishes off the look

@@MP-ni5fb some powders seem to be setting and finishing as well? Like the CT? Then what's best, a specific finishing product or a hybrid one? It's HD loose translucent (makeup Forever) better than compact, lightly colored like Mac or CT? Thanks a lot
@StephanieMarie
@StephanieMarie 13 күн бұрын
@@taniapannellini5209 I'm sorry you're confused! It doesn't have to be complicated! Some setting powders are sheer and have beautiful finishes that make them great dual purpose powders. But finishing powders rarely lock in makeup the same way a dedicated setting powder does. If you have a sheer powder with a lovely soft finish, test it out and see if it gives you the effect you're looking for. If not, then check out one of the powders I recommended. One powder isn't better than the other. It's all personal preference. For example, I love setting with the CT powder, but rarely use it as a finishing powder because I prefer my finishing powders to have a soft candelit glow diffused effect. So I use a dedicated finishing powder. Personal preference. The beauty of makeup is playing around and finding what you like :)
