Many of you have requested that I film a lesson on driving and with it being such a key component to any players' game, I felt it was important for me to take the time to share my insight.

@Padraig Harrington - Thank you my friend. Last weekend I hit an all time low in confidence with my driver. I've been sticking to bad advice about taking a wide stance, my backswing length was too long, my grip was too strong, I didn't cup my wrists at all (in fact I did the opposite) and the results were many pulled / hooked tee shots. On the holes where I didn't use driver I was even par including a couple of birdies. On the 10 holes I used driver I lost balls, leaked balls into the deep rough and was having to hit long irons or my hybrid to get near the green. Shot a 92 and I felt it should've been sub 80 for how well I hit my irons and around the green. Yesterday and today I've been to the range with my iPad and this video. I'm smoking it out there, straight as a die and the distance I'd lost since I took on those bad lessons has all come back. I'm using that front foot as a trigger, I've shortened my swing so the stretch is part of my downswing and my grip is exactly the same as my irons. 280 yards at the range with the ball teed up mid way. That's 60 yards longer than I've been getting if I hit the fairway. I'm so much in control I'm almost crying with joy and the the best thing is it feels so natural and repeatable. Always loved you as a player and now I'm going to put your poster up in my man cave!!!!!

Mr. Harrington, I cannot thank you enough for taking the time and care to provide this information. Not just this video, but the entire series. So much of what you describe, in these videos, was what seemed common-sense to me. Your explanations have confirmed so much of my thinking. Your descriptions and explanations are not what are on other golf sites. But deep-down it just seemed to make sense, even thou “Other Sites” were describing something entirely different. Your earlier chipping video improved by chipping, and chipping confidence, 10,000%. Even my playing partners were asking me if I took any lessons, because I seemingly learned how to chip, overnight! Again Thank You and good luck on the tour!!!!!!!!

Do you create torque in your back leg during the backswing like Hogan and Nicklaus? The reason I ask is in the 1980s learning how a swing should work Golf My Way by Nicklaus was my instructor and then studied Hogans Five lessons and realized the key to the timing and power both their swings was turning the back foot square and holding the there with the spikes to wind up the back leg like one of those rubber band powered toy planes I played with as a kid. The difference between their styles was due to the fact Hogan’s car crash left him unable to lift his trail arm and body which is exactly why he figured out he needed to plant the back foot twist his body around that to generated swing speed. In the process of doing that he discovered it also greatly improved the consistency of his flight path. The cupping of the lead wrist at the top in Hogan’s swing was a result of his injuries. If using a flat wrist his club was laid off. Cupping the wrist move it 45° to parallel where the butt end and shaft needed to be pointed for correct path in the downswing. Nicklaus was criticized by pundits for his flying elbow when he turned pro but if you analyze and duplicate both swings like I have you will see that like Hogan, Jack dropped and reconnected the back elbow to hip before triggering the hips to fire with that coiled tension when he lowered the heal of his front foot pulled off the ground in the backswing. Jack describes that cause and effect in Golf My Way. Your swing has the same effective use of rising and falling body mass to accelerate and guide the club path consistently that Hogan’s lacked due to how he had to keep trail arm tucked to his side. The concept of swinging into resistance of the squared back foot was actually first suggested in print by Abe Mitchell in his 1933 book “Down to Scratch” as a way to generate power and make swing path more predictable. I have read that Hogan was aware of that book and learned from it. The underlying goal of the often proffered advice have hips 45° closed, and shoulders 90° at top of backswing which can be controlled with repeatable precision by back foot angle IF one uses the technique suggest by Mitchell and employed buy Hogan and others who copied his lower body action, including Nicklaus (and me since reading Jack’s book in 1987. The goal is actually not hitting those body movement waypoint but because hitting them, for most people, will automatically stop the club shaft parallel to swing path at he top setting up an ideally balanced path on the way down with the was repeatability as the pendulum of a grandfather clock because the underlying laws of physics acting on the mass of the club head are similar. That is why the more one swings outside the line in the takeaway the more the club will want to swing inside-out coming back. Jim Furyk understood that and that is why his loopy looking swing made him the best ball striker of his era. Combining an ‘outside the hands’ takeaway with the coiled back foot makes the rest of the swing automatically consistent if the golfer manages to maintain balance and not get pulling on toes at impact pulling the club further out than anticipated at address by starting with club face with ball near toe at address and weight on heels at address to anticipate being pulled forward to some degree. I didn’t fully understand why it worked until reading Five Lessons and doing everything Hogan’s way playing practice rounds six days a week starting in 2008 after I retired and took a job as golf course marshal to play for free. I spent hundreds of hours on the range doing 1/4 swings with a 7 iron as Hogan suggested and discovered that my coiling and firing my back leg like a spring I accelerated the club head better than with my previous non-torqued back leg. Hogan’s philosophy was that until you could hit a 1/4 swing shot from the point the club force pulls the lead arm straight back it is unrealistic to think you’ll be able to execute a full swing repeatably and understand the actual cause and effect of what powers and guides the club. I now start every practice session with that drill.

Thank you Padraig, this is the best explanation of the power sequence I’ve ever seen .
