The Narrows at Zion National Park is one of the most popular hiking trails in the park, if not the entire U.S., and for good reason! The hiking "trail" is actually miles of wading (and sometimes swimming!) through the icy Virgin River that allows hikers to explore the steep, narrow, and gorgeous canyons towering above. But there's a secret to getting the most out of hiking the Zion Narrows, and we're sharing it with you here!

My older brother & I hiked only part of the way thru the Narrows back in April of 1997 and at one point the water was almost up to our necks and I could tell my brother didn`t like that at all. Anyway we kept hearing Canyon Wrens way up above our heads as we were hiking out of the Narrows. We both are big bird watchers so it was a real treat to hear the super cool song of the Canyon Wrens echoing up and around the canyon walls.

That is really cool about the wrens -- and, of course, that you hiked this with your brother! Next time we do this hike, we will for sure look and listen for the wrens!! ❤️

There is no contest I've done alot of hiking in my life and no hike comes anywhere near as beautiful and fun as this hike. It's unbelievable and I would say if there was ever a hike you don't want to die without doing its the Narrows. I am glad I had the opportunity to do this hike years ago because I got an injury at work a few years back so I may never be able to do a hike like this again so I like to watch videos of others hiking. This is still my favorite hike I've ever seen and I'm glad I was able to experience this before my injury.

Beautiful Zion videos! I love Zion! I was there in August celebrating my birthday too! We headed up Kolab Terrace Rd and hiked to Northgate View, awesome for a trail run and only 2 other people on trail. Beautiful views looking straight at/above Zion canyon in the distance. I think that trail also connects to trails that go back down into the narrows. Highly recommend 👍 thanks always for taking us on your adventures ☺️

Wow, this really brings back memories of my hike up the Narrows about 15 years ago. Not only how beautiful and magical the place is, but how cold and wet I was the whole time. But it was worth it. Unless you've done it, you can't appreciate how difficult that hike is, slogging through rushing water over slippery boulders you can't even see. But it's a great adventure! Thanks for another inspiring video! PS - I slipped and fell on the way back, at least a couple times...

If you like exquisite beauty with no crowds, it's really the only way to do it on these super popular hikes. It's easy to forget that falling on super slippery rocks in a roaring river is quite normal, because Adam just prances about like some sort of mermaid out of water 😂 And yes, exploring places with peace and solitude is definitely our preference, so we usually try to finagle some way to make that happen. One of the most enjoyable hikes I've ever done!! Next time you should apply for a permit to do it top-down. It's 16 miles and more expensive (because of the shuttle) but is more fun, too. Thank you guys for sharing your experience with us!
@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
Our pleasure, Sherief! Top down definitely sounds really cool. But the only thing you'd miss then is the ability to be all alone in the coolest parts below Big Springs. So we need to do top down now, and you need to do the biking in before the crowds for bottom up, and then we'll both have it all!
@innismor11
@innismor11 Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's the other way (top-down, 2-day) of having of The Narrows to yourself (vs waking at 4am for a bike to the bottom-up), since the permits for top-down are daily restricted. Day 1 you'll be virtually by yourself; you get to camp overnight (still beyond the bottom-up crowd) on a shelf above The Narrow (we skipped bringing a tent; slept cowboy) and then you wake up early the 2nd day and you'll have Wall Street to yourself too. The last stretch out (noonish; a mile or two) will have the bottom-up throngs coming the other way, but by then you'll have seen and experienced 90%+ of the good stuff. Experiencing The Narrows by yourself vs. with a hundred+ others --- night and day.

Thanks Jon! Seriously stoked to hear that we're inspiring you guys to get out more. As for shoes, we debated what to wear in the Narrows and opted for old trail runners with good traction that we don't use much anymore. That's pretty much always our solution for water hikes, so we keep older shoes around rather than throwing them out for just such occasions. They worked great for me. Elise slipped everywhere, but pretty sure she would have done that even in water boots -- the slippery rocks, deep water, and swift current were just hard for her smaller frame. Have fun on Bridge to Nowhere, and as you just start out on it look up to your right because that's the trail for Iron Mountain -- hereby encouraging you guys to start training for that beast as well!

@LiveHardxLoveHard
@LiveHardxLoveHard 2 жыл бұрын
It was CRAZY being alone out there for so long, Matt. You would love it -- you def have to bike in next time! We def went a lot faster downstream, but it's hard to say it's just the current because we also filmed a lot less on the way back as we were passing a bunch of people. So our speed was about 50 percent faster heading downstream, but not sure how much of that was because of filming less. P. S. we shoulda brought a dry bag too, but fortunately Elise's phone was ok and Adam never even got anything wet, just put it all above his tall head for the really deep parts!

My wife and I did this hike in March 1993 but took 2 days to complete it. I don't know if camping is still allowed, but we camped about halfway down the Narrows after claiming one of the few sites from the ranger. There was a bulletin board at the Zion ranger station, and we left a note stating that we needed someone to shuttle our vehicle from the start to the end on a specific day. The next day, a couple walked up to our campsite. They had just finished the trek, read our note on the bulletin board, and needed someone to help them retrieve their vehicle. We drove them up to the start to pick up their car in exchange for them taking our truck to the finish. It worked out great. We did lots of research for this trip and actually brought inexpensive blow-up rafts to put our backpacks on when the water got too deep. As noted in your video, the water was just above freezing and when we had to swim and pull our gear by raft, it took our breaths away. I think the worst part for us was leaving early on the second day on the frigid March morning and having to put warm feet with new socks into wet boots. Our feet were instantly wet and freezing again, especially when we had to trudge through the water again. As others experience when doing this as a 2-day trip, it doesn't get warm until about noon when the sun is directly overhead in the narrow canyon. Good times! So happy to have done it.

Nice video, brings back memories of doing this in October as a backpack from the top (Chamberlain's Ranch). Very cold. Would suggest wet suit booties and spring conditions wetsuit for protection at that time of year. Top down requires a permit. At 56 sec. in the video I think I see Mystery falls, the last rappel when descending Mystery Canyon. Usually a crowd at the bottom looking up to see the descent. You will need ropes, harness, descender, helmet, tether, carabiners for that. Also, knowledge of canyoneering techniques, experience and a permit for that canyon. Thanks, John

Hiked all over the US and the Narrows is hands down one of my favorite. Highly recommend going top down from Chamberlain Ranch. You need a permit and the right gear (depending on the time of year you go). We broke it up into two days and camped in the canyon.
