The SECRET to Plein Air Painting Mountains in Gouache | Plein Air Gouache Painting Demo

In this plein air painting video I'm going to talk about what it's like painting mountains with a small gouache kit, how i break down a complex scene like this, and what the thought process is in turning a small sketch into a larger studio painting. I felt like I was painting in Tolkien's middle earth from Lord of the rings. Also pthalo blue. Get yourself some pthalo blue folks.

It’s incredible man! Almost overwhelming. Believe it or not it’s a STATE park, but I think it rivals many national parks. Cheap and easy. $20 a week and you can camp etc. Custer state park in SD. highly recommend.

It’s a tackle box I bought at Walmart but have modified a bit. It’s really easy and nice. Im thinking of making a video on it and continuing to refine it. It’s totally waterproof which is nice and very lightweight

Don't the gloves drive you nuts?

they're not too bad, as these ones are pretty breahtable. They're rubber finger and palm and neoprene on the back which is very breathable. I wear them so that my hands are automatically clean of paint when I'm done painting, and also in case there are long term health ramifications from getting pigment on your skin. This is something I'm still researching, but since every time I paint without gloves I get paint on my hands and since many people seem to suggest that paint on the skin is incredibly risky and pose cancer threats, I'm currently painting with gloves. But ultimately I agree with you and if I were convinced that there were no health risk, I would paint without them. I hope to come to that conclusion but until them I'm continuing to do research on the matter and wear gloves which also keeps my hands relatively clean.

"cadmium free yellow" is a marketing scam. They charge cadmium prices but it's usually just hansa yellow which is way less expensive. Most of the 'cadmium free' colors don't put the pigment colors on the tube so you won't realize, but you can find some and see for yourself.

Good to know. I’ve always found hansa yellow to be completely transparent but the cad free yellow is super opaque so I wonder if they’re adding some strange opacifiers. One thing that runs through my mind is just cause it’s Cad free doesn’t mean it’s “toxin free” haha. Man going down that rabbit hole is depressing because it’s very difficult to tell how toxic these things are and it’s pretty difficult to mitigate. Seems like either someone will tell you it’s all going to kill you or someone else will say it’s totally fine and it’s all anecdotal info anyway. I’m trying to really dig in and learn more before I share everything but I’ll probably make a video on it at some point. I’ve noticed the fear of toxicity is much greater in the oil community than the water based paints and yet the heavy metals are the same in both tubes. 🤦‍♂️
