I got thrown from my horse team roping. Smashed my hip pretty good and took Vicadon (Sp?) for a week. One day watching TV while recuperating I realized I hadn’t shit in a week! OMG passing a weeks worth of shit was like passing a 16 pound bowling ball! My hip never hurt after that!

Shifting up while standing. In desert terrain I stand a lot. Accelerating on fast single track I shift standing up. I am size 10 boot. Sometimes I don’t use the clutch and just tap the shifter quick and right back to proper foot position. Interesting topic because I do feel awkward doing it but I have to. No time to sit

This is a great quick conversation, learned a lot. I started bringing my foot around the shifter and under like aj said because it was hard as a beginner learning with size 12 boots. But the tip about just trying not to shift at all standing up is really interesting. I mostly ride the woods but I'm going to try that.

I ride a 150 two-stroke, and I frequently have to upshift while standing. If there is a long straight away after a corner that I have to take in second gear, I will usually have to shift into third and sometimes fourth gear.

For someone that maybe over thinks stuff like this, the instruction/insight in this clip is one of the most valuable things I have learned watching Mr. Catanzaro. Thanks Aj.

Hey AJ,thanks for all of your tips. I am 6'4" novice rider with a size 14 boot. I had a lot of trouble shifting my bike at the correct times which made me ride certain sections of the track in the wrong gear because I had to sit down to get the shift. I moved my shifter up one notch to get my boot under it while standing. I still have to do what you explained by moving my toes out and back in to get under the shifter but can stay standing while landing jumps to get the next gear and stay on the throttle. I do not hit any false neutrals and practiced this on flat land before going out on a track so I would not take a nose dive. Friends are not able to ride my bike because they do hit neutral. Obviously my body is not made for being a pro racer but I love it just the same. I also run stock length shifters,bar height and seat. I learned from you to get into the correct attack position and not to modify my bike like a trail bike,I only ride motocross tracks. Hope this helps any of your followers with a big foot. Anyone who tries this please practice shifting in a field first to see if it works for you,crashes hurt!

Size 14 boot would definitely be a good reason to move that shift lever maybe one notch higher! I like your call on not changing anything else on bike 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Something that can help ; Look at revolver Shifter by Zeta ; their Rotating shift tip provides 6 different positions, Wich I prefer the the highest position out there to get my boots underneath.

Thanks for all your tips AJ, a lot of these I had picked up through trial and error being a smaller rider I had to get technique dialed in pretty quick...I couldn't just muscle myself around the track. Having smaller feet I generally have to shift while sitting shuffling my feet forward from the balls of my feet is a long way to go. Next step is working on standing through corners after rupturing my PCL and MCL dabing in a corner. Love your videos and podcast chats, great info 👍

don't forget the shift lever and brake lever have height adjustment's to accommodate this technique to fit your size of foot/boot.

Longer shift levers for larger boots. I upshift all the time standing. Just practice. It does not work in many situations, but does in some.

If always wondered about this. The whole "holding on with your feet/knees", while moving your foot to shift, is tough.

I really had the same question. for me thats where the strak future will have a huge impact. If you dont have to shift and use the rear brake, your feet will always be in that perfect position it will be mindblowing faster. I just wonder why the manufactures dont change shifter/ rear brake paddle position, so you dont have to move your feet.

Interesting, as an enduro-rider, I stand 98% of the time and there a lot of shifting when riding single-track in gnarly terrain. Never thought about how I do it but now realises that I too use the "going around-technique". Shifting in the air wouldn't make much sense for me , would equal once or twice per race 🤣🤣

Well shoot, guess i need to stop standing in the corners lol. It does suck shifting on corner exit acceleration while standing when you want to be driving off that peg.

I’m 54 been riding ever sense I was five, I recently set bounce on a short step up. I think I was so surprised how high I was I didn’t brake and just let it fly when I landed smooth with my right foot on the pegs, my left foot missed the peg and I didn’t crash but crushed my ankle. The dr didn’t think he could save my foot but thank god he did. Now I have to lift my foot to change gears very hard to get comfortable with that for sure.
@inevespace
@inevespace Жыл бұрын
I don't understand, in any case you lift foot for shifting. Riding boots are stiff and you can't flex ankle to shift when you seating. Old videos of Gary Semics teach to lift foot for shifting up.

Man this is just the perfect tip. I've been doing this sense 8years old and didn't even realize it haha. Id have to say stand on the bike every chance you get! Even if your ass is only a couple inches off the seat. It will put you in a better riding position, allowing for better bike control! Hey man I get it... I sit too. All depends on situation and how good you feel that day.

What is the best way to shift in the air? I have tried it before and I end up diving the nose of the bike.
@themotoacademypodcast

You need to be comfortable with the movement to/from the shifter first, before you attempt to do it in the air. When you get good at it, the movement is so small it would never effect your position 👍🏼
