I just find it strange that there's this apparent debate between "vintage vs modern". The fact is, there's value in BOTH and Pokemon's fate is tied in both the vintage and the modern. Without the success of modern, the vintage cards would fade into obscurity. If vintage goes to zero, then people would find no value in modern as they'd think it would have the same fate. Collect what you like, simple.

I'd rather invest in modern than vintage. If you didn't get into vintage a few years ago before prices went banana's its probably best to stay out. Vintage is manipulated and vastly overvalued on the high end and will be more volatile than modern leaving you with some big losses when the bubble bursts and prices readjust.

Totally agree, the bubble has passed and gone. Also I have a suspicion about all these base set booster boxes popping up in the wild after it’s been 20 years in perfect condition. They just keep appearing. I just hope for the sake of my collection and Pokémon overall that there isn’t some future scandal that comes out that the Pokémon company was secretly reprinting these but it’s very suspect in my opinion

Thank you for the kind words! I'm a teacher by profession, and one truth you learn early in this career is that learning happens in the mind of the learner, not the words/actions of the teacher. No one is ever done learning in life (teachers included), but we have to embrace the pursuit of processing, assimilating, and evaluating information for ourselves.

Thank you for this timely, informative, reaction, video. Modern, vintage, or the middle: it’s always about the basics and collecting what we enjoy. Your Fundamentals are KEY! slide is one of my favorite tools. An excellent reminder for investors that all those graded promo cards from ETBs are fun, yet not scarce. Look at all the new rookie cards being released in modern, the chase cards that are truly rare, and the new packs like holiday sets with a guaranteed holo or better. It’s a good time to buy, collect, enjoy, play, and invest. Lechonk is hilarious. The Pokémon company’s mix of new with older fan favorites is fantastic. Who knows? In 20 years, Lechonk may be the classic chase card. ;)

Pokemon and many collectibles are similar to stocks. Newer products are growth where we buy it withbthe hope they grow in price. Vintage or older products already had their growth boom and become value. We buy it if we think it is undervalued. Lots of financial "advisors" sharing info just like lots of pokemon "influencers" on youtube.

Thumbs up for this video. You definitely bring up some very valid points. As to the “Modern vs Vintage” as far as an investment, I feel they will both increase in value, but there could be a greater growth percentage with Modern as opposed to buying vintage at current prices. I also agree with your life cycle of the investment chart and feel we are in a down cycle, especially towards the end of last year and beginning of this year. There has been some recent movement upwards so we maybe entering the steady growth period you have which usually follows a market crash.

Great take. I collect vintage and modern and I will say I've been focusing my attention on getting those alt arts / grading as many as I can to potentially be 10s. Making profit on these is simply easier at the moment. But I also see an opportunity in buying vintage cards I once thought were too expensive and have cooled off. Alt arts one day will probably cool down so having discipline and being patient is important not to feed into the hype and buy things overpriced in the current market. Although ironically it is easiest to make money on things that are 'in' and hyped. I personally like vintage arts more overall (e-readers, WOTC, ex) so this might be a good time to shift back to vintage finally pick those up now that demand is less competitive.

I never had great pokemon cards as a kid... pulled Zapdos holo from base set once and the rest is hard to remember... so I've actually found myself going after cards I never even had as a kid and after some years started becoming more interested in collecting rarer cards in general like shining mewtwo and reverse legendary collection holos... because these cards are less seen than say base set or jungle... the scarcity and higher prices to obtain these cards in Mint 9 or Gem Mint 10 has made these cards feel more like treasure! I do believe kids in the future like me when they grow up.. will desire these vintage cards that they never even had seen except on someone's YT channel. KZbin has actually showcased these vintage cards too so many kids they might have picked their favorite shiny or E-series cards picked out in their mind.. when time comes they might have to have it!

Buy bulk and nickel and dime it out and scale it up to start having enough extra cash to buy something else. I buy smaller and older sets and focus on under $250 to complete. Those are my long term singles investments (aka my collection). Then I buy championship decks. 2 complete sets sealed and 2 sets are opened and each deck gets a binder. The sealed decks “should” be a good 5-10 year return of 4-6x. The binders can easily be a good 2-3 year return of 2-3x. Don’t target the trends target the tcg players.

Comparing to stocks and all the variety- I personally look at vintage as more of an established company with consistent demand and consistent earnings. I look at modern as more of a speculative play, like a new technology type look. Modern has the potential for larger booms and busts, and some of it may fail completely, but that doesn’t discredit it from being a fun, enjoyable, and potentially profitable thing to collect. I also believe like with stocks, as people mature they will expand and enjoy more consistent “boring” and historic cards, as they explore the hobby and want to expand- not having all their eggs in one basket. Like many people commented, I believe a combination of both is a great idea, and a very fun way to collect as well.

As always, think for yourself. You can watch all the content you want but you cannot blindly follow someone's opinion, that's never a good idea. As many videos as I've seen about making money with Pokémon, nothing worked for me until I started experimenting, failing, making little to nothing again and again up to a point where I found a process I almost enjoy, takes me a couple of hours a week and gets me enough to buy most of the cards I want with €0 out of my pocket, can't ask for more. That knowledge, that know-how is definitely not something you can understand watching a few videos. Investing is the same for me, I followed the hype a couple of years ago and bought ETBs upon ETBs of Shining Fates, now I can literally buy them for 20% less, let alone profit lmao. When I was thinking for myself though "Damn, I really love this Dream League set, let me throw some money at it", 50 a box, now they're 350-400 where I live. Should have bought more lol. In the end, think for yourself, own up to your mistakes and learn from them. If you love this hobby, in the end, you will succed.

I think Base Set vintage will tank In price as it’s getting boring, also I find it weird how all these base set boxes just keep popping up in the wild after 20 years ( a whole other conspiracy in itself 🤔) but other vintage will retain its value. Modern Alt Arts and Evolving skies is a great investment.

I think that's true in general, but I don't think they will tank in price. I think they've reached a point where they may increase in value more in line with typical growth of a set over time. However, I do find that there's exclusions to this. For example, Celebrations 2020, or for example the Legendary Collection reverse holos. Main point of view would be that they're unique, or are interpretations that are still underappreciated.

The bias with history is that "history" with Pokemon corresponds, at the moment, to your childhood. In other terms, as the Pokemon phenomenon is relatively young (25 years), history = nostalgia and most of the current adults want WOTC. I think that the nostalgia factor is the most important with collecting. Adults with an income want to buy the items they couldn't afford when they were kids. The "history" factor, in general, involves a niche of collectors. See, for example, movie posters collecting: most of the adults, now, collect posters from the 1970s... the movies that impressed them when they were young. Only some of them, a niche, is interested in the cinema history and look for older posters (silent films, WWII propaganda). In this case, history nostalgia, because cinema is 120+ yo and no kid is surviving from the nickelodeons era. Who, nowadays, wants antique watches, or 1930s cars? A niche. The adults with an income in the year 2040 will be the ones which now, as kids, want to pull the SWSH alt arts, or Miraidon and Koraidon 😁. Only some of them, a niche, will be interested in the history of Pokemon and will look for base set.

No offense to him clearly I don’t know him, just seemed like he’s making it a bigger deal than it is. People collect everything and all eras of Pokémon are important. But I feel his point about the community in vintage is in part valid. @@benyoung4305 That's fair . . . I think most people generally stick to what they know best, especially when doing market analysis. Many of us in the vintage community have been collecting, selling, and corresponding with one another for over a decade. Many of those individuals also collect and sell modern, so I don't think it's conspiratorial. In fact, most of us never aspired to be KZbinrs or businesses, just collectors making KZbin videos to share our collections and our advice to help out others in the community with similar goals. NOW is the best time to be buying vintage PSA 10 whilst half the hobby is Hype Sucked into modern alt arts which are POP 6000's. FYI I collect vintage PSA and modern sealed

I think what is so confusing for me is that people seem, my perception at least, to think that Jake doesn't think modern is good? I think Jake has done a wonderful job seeing the nuances and his argument has been, at least to my knowledge, "what is the argument for something to be a good speculation/investment." I do think that he does accredit the value to both vintage and modern, but his biggest concern has been the argument people are using for their speculation/investment. I think that this is as clear as day, and something that he was speaking about in the boom. Jake even argues against overspending on vintage for the same reason, which is, "when the argument and mentality for doing so seems to 'not make sense'." Of course, this is my perception of Jakes words, which could be wrong and not at all what he meant. He then uses data presented in other hobbies to back up his argument (which I don't 100% agrees with, but then again, the numbers is a valid argument). I was vocal about this in the comments of the video as well. Somehow, I think people are very much keen on the end product and don't fully listen to his argument, and forget to understand the reasoning. Lastly, I also understood Jake to be equally as critical of vintage during the 2020/2021 boom when vintage was inflated. Of course, if I misunderstand Jake/anyone that follows his point of view, and they want to correct me, please do so. I would like to believe that I am open to such feedback.

I think you nailed it! I know Jake was mocked by many for being too bearish on the future of vintage during the peak of the boom, but he was right. His perspectives are always more complex and nuanced than simply saying which products or cards to buy, which I think sometimes turns people off to his argument. They want a short, simple answer. In our polarizing society, it's also not uncommon to oversimplify or misrepresent someone's position, which I think has been done to Jake on too many occasions. I have nothing but respect for Jake and find him to be one of the most balanced and thorough minds in the hobby.

The secret truth of Pokémon investing is that it's stupid to exclusively invest I'm pokemon cards. You collect the cards because you have an appreciation for the cards and if they gain value across 20 to 30 years then yay happy bonus. I personally love to see every single pokemon card go to $0 just to get rid of the hype beast investor douche bags out of the hobby. They are here for money only and they don't belong in the hobby.
