I quit my job earlier this year, moved to the countryside and started painting and working from home. It was the best decision of my life. I have a 1/4 of my previous income, but my days are blessed and every day I wake up with a smile. Being able to paint, be in nature and follow my passion has been beneficial also for my health, that has flourished ever since the move. I can give following advice if anyone thinks of doing the same: prepare wisely, get rid of your debts, and embrace your fears - they are essential to the process and we all had them. Good luck!

Katie, You are so right about giving yourself goals and room to grow here! I would love to one day quit my job to to become a full time artist. However if I just did that right now I would probably be homeless in a couple of months. Currently I am slowly working on building up my skill level by literally using ANY. SPARE. SECOND. I have to work on my art. I do not go anywhere without my sketch book. If I only have 2 minutes to make art in a day, than I spend 2 minutes to make art. I started a youtube channel even though my videos are pretty horrible and cringey but I know I won't learn if I don't put something out there. I also spent 2 years pursuing a promotion at my day job so that I would be making enough money to to support myself and save enough to launch my business in the next 5 years. It's hard and daunting but now I am able to keep working on my art and slowly make bigger investments in things like a quality printer etc. I guess currently I am approaching my art career like a very enthusiastic amateur until I have the means to strike out on my own. I love the video! You do an amazing job of both being honest and realistic yet still kind and encouraging. My art style is very different than yours (although when I'm really emotional I branch into abstract expressionism a bit) but I find a lot of inspiration in what you do and share!

Hi LeighAnne, that's soooo awesome!! We often view success as something that happens overnight and easily, but realistically it takes lots of hard work which sounds like what you're doing! Well done for staying positive and carrying on, it can be so difficult to get through self-doubt but it will be SO worth it in the end. Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us and wish you all the best with it. Don't forget to enjoy the ride 😁🙌🏻✨

Hi Leigh! All I am going to say to you is KEEP IT UP! Don't give up on your dream, don't give up on yourself. especially when it gets hard. Most people just bail on their dreams when it gets hard. Just stick to what you are doing with dedication and true spirit. Best luck!

Hi, Leighanne! Glad to know that you're pursuing art like that. Keep it up, especially with your KZbin channel. I also made one recently to document my progress and like a way to make sure that I consistently give time for art. I just have 1 video for now though haha And of course, don't worry, many of us start with cringey videos but those will help us see that we were courageous enough to start something we want. The challenge is to keep it alive, so for the meantime, I agree with you that just give time for it may it be a few minutes or so and make investments along the way. Good luck and all the best! Enjoy the learning process :)

I'm building up to my full time art career. I would like to give lessons or art classes as part of my job, sell prints, originals, make youtube videos, etc. I currently have a full time job, but I started instagram last year and have slowly been growing a following their. I work at a library so I'm always borrowing books on various art topics to continue learning and it's helped so much. I listen to and watch all the informational youtube videos I can and I give free lessons to a co-workers daughter once a week, to get some teaching experience under my belt. I also show my artwork to a lot of other staff members, so I'm getting my name out there locally as well. Responses have been positive and there's definitely been an encouraging amount of interest in my work. My focus this year was on developing my skills, discovering my aesthetic, and building a portfolio. Next year I might start offering commissions locally and see how its recieved. I'm basically taking things one step at a time and seeing where the journey takes me.

Hi, Katie! Thanks for making such great content. I’m an artist and new mom about to start a KZbin channel showing my art process. Things are up and down finding time to create but I just keep re-committing to it and moving forward. Getting over the idea of being a “perfect” artist before I start was a challenge. Now I’m just focusing on having fun and taking care of my creative side. Cheers & happy holidays!

Hi Barbara! It sounds like you have it all under control 🙌🏻 congrats on being a new mum 😊Carve out a 'routine' (I say that loosely) that works for you and just work when you feel like it's possible. I totally know what you mean about being a 'perfect' artist, rememberber there is no such thing. Anything we see on the internet is kind of a fantasy life, and we don't always see the tears and bad times to other people's lives, but they do happen! Wishing you all the best, you seem so wise 😊🌸

Great tips Katie! I started my art business a year and half ago, it's the most difficult thing I've ever done but so so worth it. I'm at the point now where I can support my business but not yet personal expenses. I know it'll take time and lots of patience. For those artists who think of giving up their art business dream, keep on going! Keep on learning, keep on creating, keep on showing up, let yourself fail so you can learn, don't be afraid to try new things, and let your followers join you on your artist journey. This is a marathon, not a sprint and remember to remind yourself each day why you're creating art in the first place. :)

Thank you for your tips, i definitely did start thinking of this after my little sis (9 yrs old) showed me ur vid (the wave one) for the first time! Thank u for the tips, espthe last one where u said that there is space for all. I agree on this and definitely believe that being attracted to someone ´s art is not a simple formula , i think it is rather more and maybe alot to do with the genuineness and how the artist’s motives and feelings really seem to be alive in the paintings colors and concept! And ur art seems to be one of those unique ones for me tbh especially natural scenes and how u blend mauve colors for flowers. Uniquely Elegant and soft.

I started my instagram and twitter, and right now I'm getting myself ready to post and share as I start it all up, and lead up to the launch of my shop! Thank you for yet another interesting video. I've been working hard the past few years trying to increase my following on social media. Trying to get traction to become, eventually, a full time artist. There are times I've thought about giving up but I'm so glad I haven't. My channel is still very small and I totally get what you mean when you say it can take a little joy away from creating. I just do not have the time to peruse everything I want to lol but for me I am still very passionate about being creative, not just painting though portrait painting will always be my first love. I'm in the middle of a daily series and noticed a drop in subscribers which has been difficult to swallow as I'm still trying to reach my goal of 1k lol I've watched you from the start of your channel and have been very impressed and in awe at how well you have done. So congratulations. I do enjoy your style of painting and videos and I have been inspired by you on many occasions. You are definitely one of my fave artist youtubers I will watch regardless of what you are doing lol perhaps my tale of my experience so far is sounding a little negative of what I'm not getting. So let me end with what I am achieving. I now have a good core following who are participating in monthly challenges I now hold in my small but growing Facebook group. I enjoy more watch time and viewers engaging with my live painting videos, sometimes I do portraits. So if you are reading this thank you so much for taking an interest in me an almost 50 year old who has returned to art after many years away. I would love to paint your portrait, and Gift you the original painting. If you are at all interested please let me know. Have a creative day T X

Hi! I'm a SAHM, so I'm not looking to fully support myself, financially with this, but I'm a creative and have had a dream of opening my own online shop (Etsy or elsewhere) to sell my handmade goods. I've been painting with acrylic for a few months now and recently picked up watercolor paintings. They are LOVE and I am sharpening my skill to open shop soon! 🙏🤞 If not this year, my ultimate goal is to start January 2020. I would love to see an additional video with how to start an online shop (your recommendations: Etsy or opening your own site or something else), your suggestions for packaging to ship, etc.

Hi Katie, thanks for this useful tips. I've been thinking to be my own boss for more than a year now but I realize that I don't put a lot of effort into the process. I'm not afraid to say that I'm scared! I'm alone in this and I do think a lot about the "what if things don't go the way I planned. Who is going to support me if I need something..." Pretty negative things to be honest but oh how I would love to quit my job to pursue my dreams! I know that it is a big step and that I really need to work hard in order to realize it. I'd like to ask a few questions. How is important to have a body of work prior to the start of your business? Also, I paint in watercolour and acrylics and I love them both. Do I need to choose one over the other to sell in my shop or can I sell them both? Many artists talk about consistency but I personally feel that if you love to work with different mediums, why you have to choose? Sorry for this long comment and thanks for sharing this video ❤️❤️ P.S. I love Skillshare!!!

I really needed this today! I'm about 4 months into my art journey. With two young children to look after I paint mostly in the evenings when I am already tired but I live doing it so forget how knackered I am when I sit down! I think being an adult and having a network of friends and acquaintances with money to spend has helped. Had I done this when I was younger I wouldn't have had the client base to start me off as I do now. I'm still at the stage where I am finding my style and my "thing" which is an interesting little journey in itself. I don't have a website yet but I have Instagram annacollierarts and a Facebook page Anna Collier Arts and Commissions ☺️🖼️🎨🖌️ thanks Katie for sharing great tips!! ❤️ Xx

Would love if you checked out my paintings one day! paintings_by_caitlin.

It’s depressing bc I work so hard and no one really cares. I’ve put up my website and post some on Redbubble because I can’t afford to put my art up anywhere else. I see many artist that they could put up a distorted painting or digital art and get a massive amount of followers. I’m not a young 20 something. Very disheartening 💕

I totally understand your feelings. I've felt the same way many times. Try and focus on the reason why, why do you create. If it's because you enjoy it, then keep creating for that reason. It's very difficult but try not to let others take charge of your creativity. You will get there 😊🙌🏻
