Many of the Academy voters never see the movies on the big screen. They are sent DVD's of those that are nominated. Some vote according to personal investments or loyalties. Art seems to be of least concern in the business of Hollywood. How can one explain how "Crash" won over "Brokeback Mountain"? Elizabeth Taylor was given an Oscar for "Butterfield 8" which she referred to as "that piece of shit." Dame Judi Densch was surprised when given an Oscar for her short role in "Shakespear in Love." The awards are still important for a lucrative return on the investments, so I wish CMBYN would win something. The Academy tends to reward "performances" - someting that can used in a video splash and sound bite. Films are often cut to fit the daily schedule of the venue, which can involve 15 to 20 minutes of trailers and advertisements. The best one can do for this masterpiece is to tell others about it and contribute to the online discussions of it. Above all, buy a Blu-ray copy and study it for years to come. Also, become familiar with other great movies such as "Juliet of the Spirits," created by Federico Fellini, which are outside of the Hollywood business machines.

Jean Kennedy so true. I thought the “Shape of Water” was meh at best. It is interesting to view old broadcasts: they were not at all obsessed with fashion & there are plenty of empty seats, and the speeches are short and to the point. They still often got it wrong when it came to major awards - Really, “How Green was my Valley” over “Citizen Kane”? And no best picture nomination for “Do the Right Thing”? For the most part, Hollywood still plays it safe. Too bad.

Adriano Vazquez Some people who don’t like this film say dumb things like “It’s statutory rape because Elio’s under age and Oliver’s 24.” News Flash, Oliver’s 24 so he’s not THAT old. He’s not like some weirdo man in his mid 40’s with white hair. He’s still a young adult. And Elio’s 17 sure but the age of consent in Italy is 14, so he’s already way past that point. In the U.S. it’s 18 but that’s not such a big deal either because he’s just one year short, but it’s not statutory rape because he’s not underage in Italy. I mean if they complain about him being too young to have sex with someone older than him then why aren’t they complaining about him drinking and smoking? (it’s also legal to do those things at that age in Italy too) Lots of people his age smoke a lot in the movie, he even smokes in front of his parents and they don’t seem to mind it. Plus Oliver never pushed Elio to do anything he didn’t wanna do, Elio was the one who wanted Oliver from the very beginning. If people don’t like the movie that’s okay but at very least, they shouldn’t say things that aren’t true.
@teehee.18626 жыл бұрын
scifinerd17 hmmm for me, the law does not define morality in the absolute sense. just because the law states it is okay, it does not mean i’m not allowed to disagree. the age of consent in japan is 13. the age of consent in a few countries can be as low as 9. the law varies. i like the cinémographe and the ost and the atmosphere. however, i can still criticize the plot. edit: also being 17 and being 24 is vastly different. 17 is barely fresh out of high school. 24 is 2 years above senior age in college in the us, if you start at 18. not to mention other subtle maturity indications. and let’s not compare statutory rape with illegal drinking and smoking...
@scifinerd176 жыл бұрын
vacant But it’s not statutory rape because it’s not illegal, jeez. There’s absolutely nothing immoral about it unless one of them forced themselves onto the other, which never once happened if you actually watched the damn movie. If you have criticisms against the plot, just know that the plot’s not really meant to be complex, it’s a basic love story that takes place during the summer time. But that’s fine because the performances from the actors are what drive the movie the most. And also it’s not illegal drinking and smoking over there at that age either, so don’t say stuff like “Let’s not compare statutory rape to illegal drinking and smoking” because those are both factually wrong when it comes to this film. At least get your facts straight before you say anything.
@teehee.18626 жыл бұрын
No, you were the one who compared them, I quote: "I mean if they complain about him being too young to have sex with someone older than him then why aren’t they complaining about him drinking and smoking? (it’s also legal to do those things at that age in Italy too)" Statutory rape is not in comparison at all whatsoever with drinking and smoking as a minor. I'm not even going to explain why. Because, common sense. By the way, you didn't even address the first paragraph in my previous reply. Which, like I said, the law can be very different depending on the location, and I don't agree with it. And by your interpretation, if 18-year-old have sex with 13-year-old in Japan, that's OK? Cause you know, age of consent is 13 there, so that's not statutory rape. By the way, again, I'm not trying to change your mind, nor should you mine. We have vastly different opinions, and we aren't going to change them. I'm just explaining the opinion of someone who likes the acting, atmosphere, and cinematography of the film but dislikes the plot.
@scifinerd176 жыл бұрын
vacant I only made that comparison of those two things because since he’s 17 and he’s having sex with someone older than him and people complain, then him drinking and smoking at that age TO THEM shouldn’t be right either. Not saying that it’s just as bad. Just that it’s legal there as well and yet no one’s batting an eye about it. Yes you don’t have to agree with the law in every location because the age of consent varies depending on the country. But by my interpretation anyone at any age having sex with one another as long as it’s ABOVE the age of consent is technically legal and there’s nothing wrong with it. Just so long as it’s safe and consensual. You may not like it but if the law says it’s okay, then it’s okay. If one person’s vastly older than the other person they’re having sex with, it may be weird to some, but for someone like me it’s really not any of my business to decide what’s right and what’s wrong, only so long as it’s a mutual decision on those two people that they wanna go through with it. I prefer to just mind my own business and let them do whatever they want. And yes we do have vastly different opinions and I’m not trying to change yours. I’m just explaining why I personally think your opinion is in the wrong. Elio and Oliver are still pretty young even though there’s an age gap between them. They’re at different places in life, but Elio’s experiencing a first love romance with Oliver and coming to terms with his bisexuality. And Oliver, while he likes Elio, is not forcing anything on him. I feel like the plot works just fine. The movie’s not really about the plot anyway, it’s about the environment and the atmosphere and the intoxicating romance between Elio and Oliver that’s at the center of it. And for me, that’s really all you need.

Yes! There are actually flies in a lot of scenes in the film and Luca implements them in his other works as well (I Am Love), so it's not a coincidence. I really wish the Academy would have nominated him this year, he made such a beautiful film.

Flies tend to be abundant during the summer but they don’t live long, they usually all die out by the time the cold weather sets in, reflecting the briefness of Elio and Oliver’s relationship. The fly in the final shot represents Elio holding on to a memory of a summer that already ended. At least that was my interpretation.
@thomasthompson63786 жыл бұрын
Actually, the fly was pretty obviously an accident and it has no existential meaning. We know this (at least in the very last scene) because we see that it is snowing outside the window -- meaning it is Winter, when all the flies naturally die off. The fly is there at all only because the scene was actually filmed during warm weather, not in Winter.

This is one of all time favorite movies. As a lesbian, I like how they don't make it all about homosexuality, but simply a love story between two souls in love. You can just feel the connection whenever they are even near each other. It's nice that they also not making out the whole time, but really connecting with each other. It's truly beautiful. They also don't make it where there is a negative force not allowing them together but a neutral one.

Everything from the direction, the performances, the cinematography, the musical score, the sounds of nature in the countryside, this movie just feels so dreamlike and yet, everything feels so real. So raw. So powerful. This movie just highlights how low effort most of the romance films are today. It’s been hours since the end credits rolled and I’m STILL thinking about this film. This is one of those movies (rare ones) that remind you to appreciate your own life. It reminds me that our lives are not screenplays, they just flow naturally, and so does this movie. (For me, to make a movie feel so relateable in its pace is exactly what makes it a masterpiece.

His fathers speech at the end makes the movie. That’s what this is about. The love the father never had he’s living through his son the nostalgic quality is as if his sone is making memories for him. The memory is both of Elios past and his fathers wistful regret!
@gitzavm4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your words. That dialogue (more of a monologue) by his father emotionally crushed me. His father identifying with Elios pain yet telling him to embrace it and be richer for it was the most powerful piece of cinema I have seen in like forever...

I didn’t love this movie. I really liked it, but I didn’t love it. That said, I don’t think I’ll ever forget watching the final shot of the film and being incapable of moving because I just felt so empty inside. I don’t know how better to explain that, but it is nothing if not impactful. And visually stunning. And introspective. And fascinatingly edited all right it’s a lot of other things if not impactful you got me.

The director masterfully uses the house and its surroundings, the light inside, the water reflections, and the color balance to create a stunning visual experience. The portrayal of Italian suburban life and the beauty of human relationships is beautifully balanced with the environment, making the film feel magical. In comparison to the storyline and the emotions of the lead characters, the true artistry lies in the harmonious craftsmanship of these elements.

Call me by your name has become a part of my life, a part of my memory, of my happiness and sadness. And then I've read the book... finishing it during coming home from summer vacation, in a train, long long train...crying...because the feelings overfulled me. And there were nothing else, but this pure, warm, and at the same time, torturing 'excitement' in my chest

Nice! This kind of videos are great after you get out of the cinema and just can't get enough of the film's experience. Sometimes you don't have someone to talk to, sometimes nobody really gets it. Call Me By Your Name is fantastic. It's one of the movies you feel like entering the world of the characters, lives every second with them and feel the same pain, joy, sorrow... By the end of the final scene, specially with Elio looking deep into your (the viewer's) eyes, you get a waterfall of feelings and then the movie ends. Suddenly you're just as the main character, looking at the train leaving fast.

Same for me Alex.... I can't rid the feeling of emptiness while still having the feeling of being whole. I think what's hits me the most is that I have never experienced such relationship before and it pains me..... which also gives me a feeling of longing for it. The monologue that Elios father spoke hit me like a truck. I like to think that my father would have said such words (if he knew I was gay).. sadly he died before getting to know about it...

I loved this film, and even though I don't have high hopes for the Oscars, I'll keep my fingers crossed, if anything it deserves a wider audience. I found completely charming the connection you made to the colour palette, so simple and yet it eluded me. I was completely biased by my point of you; I live in Italy and I swear, this is the colour of the light in summer/winter. To me the cinematography looked bare and minimalist. It's nice to see other perspectives.

Seeing this movie didn't change me. It all at once re-awoke every experience of love I'd ever had. From literal settings and moments I've lived in in Italy, other parts of Europe and back home in America... to obtuse feelings of love and heartbreak i only now have a clear view of. Realizing now as I'm typing this that even my profile pic here was taken a few days before a very tearful goodbye in Southern France.

I was bawling my eyes out at the end. Their love, at first, felt like it could grow into something beautiful and remain that way for a long time, then suddenly it got ripped apart by the news that Oliver's getting married -- that hurt like hell. The anticipation that he'd come back and there would still be something there in store... damn. And when Elio, Timothee, cried in that 4 minute scene, I felt it. I felt like I was him trying to capture those fleeting moments when they were happy. I LOVE THIS MOVIE AND I LOVE THE ACTORS! Thank you, Luca.

I just watched this movie for the first time last night and I had started it and I got like 5 minutes in and I was like this is weird I don’t need to watch two gay two ( I know how crude that sounds oh but boy was I wrong) later that night I watched the interview with Ellen and then I was like okay I’ll give the movie another go and I watched the whole thing when I tell you I sobbed for the whole second half of the movie this was not just a movie to me it changed and a way that nothing ever has before I was totally not expecting this at all I’m not a big crier but after last night I just sat in my bed and cried and cried and just sat and thought about how Much this movie has touched me in... this movie was not just a movie it was a peace of art. I’m sorry I’m probably not explaining how I felt but someone how after watching it for the second time (this morning) the movie is all I can think and I somehow feel empty and filled to the brim all at once. And the ending sene all at the end took a part of me away, I think his parents knew all along but they wanted him to figure it out for himself. and the sene when he was crying by the fire it just broke my heart I could feel through the screen his heart breaking into millions of small bits. I also think that they way every sene is described is so special and unique as beautiful in its own way they way they talk to each other they way they say their words I just can’t put into words how this movie made me feel but hey at least I tried

My grandpa lives in Northern Italy and I can't see him often because I don't live in italy. He lives in a beautiful villa with a big garden, roses, beautiful statues a little red boat in witch my dad and would slowly drift over his pond. We would watch the fishes and let ourselves get sunburned. When my parents split up (my dad is Italian) I went through a photo album and I broke down. These photos pulled me away out of this reality, I wanted to go back. But I can't. I realise, the time in witch my grandpa's garden was a miracle, a dream to live in...to exist in, is gone as if it never existed, only in my memory. And I realise it will be gone forever. The review is superb! This movie really touched me. It was like a whole damn dream the entire film. I guess it addresses all our fantasies of living an affair with such intensity and passion af it was just meant to be by the gods, by the destiny. With a descrption of love which need not sexual-orientation categories. Just as natural as love emerging in the less though instant can be. Such a masterpiece. Still shocked!
