Great, energetic performance from the Ed Sullivan show. I haven't uploaded this before, as the original video clip stuttered & skipped, so I've repaired & restored it, upmixing the audio to stereo using digital separation. I hope you'll agree that Judith Durham & the Boys' rendition of the Gospel classic was well worth the time spent on restoring it. More videos from Judith and The Seekers on the playlists below:

To hear a group that was nationally known sing a song about Jesus and the gospel back in the 60s is amazing. I was alive then. Popular music was not honoring God at all. The Seekers obviously honored God and that’s why God honored them! This song and Judith’s powerful vocals are really Beautiful.

I would say that - Judith is a Christian now, but I don't know if she was then. I can't speak for the boys. But in the early days I'm sure they sang gospel songs just because they were great songs, regardless of the message. The saying that "the devil has all the best tunes" is nonsense.

Peter, Paul & Mary sang quite a few gospel type songs also: Well, Well, Well; Jesus Met The Woman; Come and Go With Me; You Can Tell the World as well as a few others. Mary Travers had a powerful voice too but could also blend well with Peter and Paul. IMO these were two incomparable musical groups from the 60s.

@757 Church. I grew up in the 60’s when God was still in ‘Victory,’ as they sang here. I can recall The byrds reciting the Bible, in one of the most beautiful songs of that era, composed. I can remember God mentioned, ‘ Don’t it make you want to go home’ by Joe South, strong emphasis on God. ‘Spirit in the Sky,’. Strong emphasis on Jesus Christ. There were more there, than today’s vile antichrist, rubbish. Just think the two current anti’s, were either eating at the table eating coal mine dust suffering, (his words) and the other on another continent, in his special garb. The two have destroyed my Nation.

The comparison with DSB is interesting! DSB rarely does _quiet_, though - she's mostly a belter. Not that I don't enjoy Judith belting too - as here! - but she does quiet too, a lot. (And lots of other styles too.) Not that I don't admire DSB a lot too - especially since I came across the 2022 clip (and I don't even _like_ "Diamonds ..." that much - but at eightysomething!)

@@G6JPG I don't compare these incredible singers, different styles, but both have amazing range, power, delivery, control, and a commanding stage prescence. I just rate these 2 absolutely exceptional singers as the highest of the artform. There are a lot of great female vocalists, but i rate Dame Shirley and Judith above all others. This is just my personal opinion, and is quite subjective as well as some obvious fact. I am a bit biased, having had a nearly 60 year crush on Judith, i just don't understand how she didn't realise how astonishingly beautiful she was / is!

@@markhill9275 My current top four are Judith, Julie, Mimi, and Nana; but I hate to compare them, as they're so different. Judith and Mimi were very beautiful little people; Julie and Shirley were very sexy. Nana's a one-off. I was luckly enough to see Judith and the boys on their "50th" tour, with some blind friends who are also fans, at the Sage in Gateshead; I saw Nana about forty years ago in Newcastle; haven't seen the others, though my dad sang with Shirley (along with about 50,000 others!) in Cardiff (and was very taken with her).

She always i think had to work harder and own the band, because she was the last member to join. I get the feeling she felt like the outsider, and so worked ever harder. She had the voice of an Angel, and all with lung problems. The people of today only scream to try and hit certain notes, but Judith just hits them. I would say the seekers are one of the few bands that stood the test of time and always will. The bands and so called singer wanna bees should listen to her and this band and learn how to play and sing in time..

They could have sung any number of the driving "folk" songs but they chose this one! Good on them. I have made this comment on other Seekers vids. " Never has one woman made modesty look so sexy or three guys made square look so cool!" The seekers are the best, period!

Amen to "Good on them." They never had a #1 hit in the US. They could have used this Ed Sullivan golden ticket to ooch "I'll Never Find Another You" closer to #1 or at least get "The Carnival Is Over" into the top 100 in the US. (See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Seekers_discography.) Judith was the one who liked Gospel. The boys were singing sea shanties before she arrived. She was using her (ironically) outsize weight on the Ed Sullivan Show to show Americans that she could sing Gospel, I do believe. Maybe this appearance helped "Georgie Girl" get to #2 the following year, 1966, but it looks as if they didn't get the typical Ed Sullivan boost. Early on, Judith changed her last name for the purpose of performance. She seems to have have been more insistent on including the good-news gospel music that was important to her. Again, good on them.

John Largan , Is it possible to do better than this? This group was always over the top. Then when you think you've heard their best, up comes another one! True talent that is so rare. I don't think they ever issued a bad song.

Well, there'll be smiling faces and tapping toes galore as the old gang begins to file in for this one. I remember this oh so well. This was the night that pretty little Aussie gal snatched up my heart with that powerful, gutsy 'take no prisoners' performance. The fellas are brilliant as well as they sing and contemplate the fact that they're on the Sullivan Show and in umpteen million homes across North America. It's written on their faces. Thanks Rich for such a marvelous gift. jtk🍁

@@markhill9275 Mark I tell you, I'd be hard put to choose between those performances. Luckily I don't have to, trouble is I'm sitting here gazing at her at nearly 1.30 am AGAIN, and I really need my sleep.

How good are The Seekers, especially Judith Durham! Great clip which demonstrates the energy & exceptional talent of this group. Pity they weren't allowed to tour the US extensively in the '60s as they would be acclaimed as the best folk/pop group in history. Once again, great work to update this performance with great separation of instruments and more vocal clarity. Well done Rich! P.S. Listen thru head/earphones....excellent!

Manoel, The Carnival is Over por incrivel que parecça é uma marcha carnavalesca, apesar de ser em ingles e a musica ser russa. Isto pq Tom Springfield ia ao carnaval carioca com frequencia e deve ter se inspirado nas musicas tocadas em bailes. Era anos 60;

Little did we know in ‘65 that Judith Durham’s voice would be earliest version of Karen Carpenter. We miss both phenomenal voices!!
