Game Sack

Күн бұрын

Episode 88 - Let's take a look at Sega's 32X add-on for the Genesis/Mega Drive and all of its games. Is it as horrible as the internet would lead you to believe or the best thing that has ever happened to gaming? Perhaps somewhere in between?
All games recorded from a real 32X in RGB.
Damn it, we're sick of you (yes YOU) not checking out the LUXURIOUS Game Sack Episode Guide so just do it already:

I remember getting my 32X on clearance at Wal-Mart for $24.95 along with a copy of every single game in the library, all for $4.99 each. It was really a pretty decent upgrade at $24.95. I loved it, held me over until I could afford a PS1 and N64 with my lawnmowing money.

I loved my 32X. I didn't buy it full retail, about 6 months after it was released they cut the price. I ended up buying it from Wal-Mart for $50 on sale. That was after I spent 2 days shoveling snow to get the money for it. I traded virtua fighter for Mortal Kombat 2. Mortal Kombat 2 is my all time favorite game and it was fan-freaking-tastic on the 32X

Knuckles Chaotix was the way it was because they wanted 2 player simultaneous play. Honestly I love the game, but I can understand why others don't like it. When I was a kid I only had the Genesis, and I wanted a 32x solely for Knuckles Chaotix. IMO Knuckles Chaotix has the best 2D graphics out of any Sonic game. They are lush and colorful, almost like a pastel painting.

About the power supply, there is a solution for that: there is a Sega Power Strip which will give you more room to plug in your Genesis and 32X and Sega CD add-on's power supplies. And by "More room", the electrical outlet sockets on the Sega Power Strip are rotated and spaced out.

I think the 32x gets a bad rep because of the AVGN's review on it which was done primarily just to highlight bad games. But a lot of 32x games are really good, and they are some of the best 2D graphics you'll see from its era. Definitely worth playing some of these games on emulator, don't bother with the real thing unless you're a collector. :)
@M3rtyville

Well, the 32x was in fact pretty expensive and has barely any games :/ If it was a seperate console (Sega Neptune) and Sega didn't come out with the Sega Saturn right away, then the 32x would have been much better. But I would pick it up over any 8th gen console as of right now because of their terrible policies, games barely living up to the hype and lack of good exclusives.
@EnigmaHood
@EnigmaHood 9 жыл бұрын
M3rtyville All true. The story goes that there was a severe lack of communication between Sega of America and Sega of Japan. 32x was essentially conceived by SOA, and they wanted the Genesis to produce more colors than the SNES, which had a superior color palette. However they had no idea SOJ was coming out with the Sega Saturn, a far superior system. However the Saturn also failed mostly due to the idiotic leadership of Bernie Stollar. The Saturn was primarily designed for 2D processing in mind, but he refused to allow 2D games to be released on it because he felt it would make the Saturn look inferior to the PS1 which had superior 3D processing. As a result, the Saturn died too. Stupid stupid leadership killed Sega.
@M3rtyville
@M3rtyville 9 жыл бұрын
EnigmaHood It is quiet sad that both sides couldn't agree on one thing. If SoJ had used the marketing tactics of SoA, the 32x had been scrapped and those games be directly planned for the Saturn as well as launch the Saturn later, they could have beaten Sony. It is like Sony had more luck than smart marketing to get all those great games on their consoles and sell like hotcakes. Even the N64 missed its chance to catch on. Ironicly I picked up a Sega Saturn recently mainly for 3D games. I really got interested in the Panzer Dragoon games and the first Nights game recently and import adapters are easy to find today thanks to the internet.
@EnigmaHood
@EnigmaHood 9 жыл бұрын
M3rtyville The Saturn was also a nightmare to properly program for. If programmed for properly, the Saturn had amazing 3D processing, as is evinced by the games you mentioned. However programming for 4 processors was no easy feat, and as a result many multiplatform 3D games looked inferior on the Saturn. Also 3rd parties flocked to the PS1 due to the superior 3D processing and ease of programming. Ironically though, most 2D Saturn games have aged a lot better than those archaic looking PS1 3D games. The Saturn was a 2D powerhouse and to this day has some of the best looking 2D games ever made.

They did had that, it's called Project Neptune and it was suppose to be a standalone Sega Genesis 32X console similar to the CDX but you can play Genesis and 32X games on it. Sega never released that console cuz everyone (consumer and developers) was focusing on the Sega Saturn at the time or still playing their Genesis. Had they still support that, it would had taken two years until we in NA got the Saturn, Sega ain't going to let that happen so they killed the 32X a year after. It was a good run but it was killed for the better.

Can I ask why you guys don't do (I don't think, maybe I missed one) system overviews on anything pre-8 bit? Atari 2600 and 7800, Coleco, etc? I know maybe they aren't in your wheelhouse era-wise but your system overview vids are great across the board...I'd love to see you go further back in time!

Ryan Amberger Yeah as long as you look past its rough history, it's a neat add on. With easily my favorite console port of Doom, and Space Harrier and Virtua Racing. And Kolibri, a very good 32X exclusive I still like replaying to this day, and knuckles chaotix, while hard to get used to, is underrated in my opinion.

The 32X alone didn't cause Sega's downfall. It was the 32X, the Sega CD, the Game Gear, the huge fiasco with Sonic Xtreme, the Dreamcast being ridiculously easy to pirate for. Just a long stream of consecutive fuck-ups that cost them the trust of her audience and third-party developers.
@FallicIdol

SuperLlama42 A lot of mistakes led to Sega's downfall. This was one of them, but I think the CD was far worse. Sega's culture had corroded, as they were pitting their American and Japanese teams against each other instead of working together. It is sad, because the Dreamcast was an amazing system, but by then they had lost the trust of the 3rd party developers and customers.

+FallicIdol I don't see how the SEGA CD was worse than the 32X. The SEGA CD was supported for years, & sold over 6 million units globally. The add-on was soley designed to compete with NEC's TurboGrafx 16 CD. I mean the SEGA CD wasn't perfect, it was a worthwhile experiment, but the 32X was a disaster. If was simply diomed from the start with its poor timing, poor graphics, and its presentation, SEGA also touted the 32X as their next gen platform, then as a 'transitional console' then canned the damn thing 11 months after launch, which tarnished their name.

The Sega CD and GameGear had nothing to do with it. The GameGear was a success ( all be it a small one) and the Sega CD, while a commercial flop, it really didn't have a hugely negative effect on Sega. They were making a lot of money on the Genesis and there Arcades. It also helps that the Sega CD did have good games and didn't have a bad impact on Sega's reputation at the time. The same can not be said for the 32x and Saturn.

+FirePrinceZuko 77 The Saturn had great titles. problem was that Bernard Solar, refused to bring popular Japanese titles over and 2D titles weren't allowed. If SEGA of America handled the Saturn the way Sega of Japan did, the Saturn would've placed a solid second here in the States.

Game Sack I understand, but I feel like every time you guys showcase a fighting game that either has a lot of violence, or uses digitized sprites, you always say that it was "because of Mortal Kombat" in a most disdainful way, like Mortal Kombat was to blame for all those games, haha. Of course, Mortal Kombat took its gameplay style from Street Fighter 2, so you can just blame THAT! :D
@GameSack
@GameSack 10 жыл бұрын
Biohazard EXTREME Well the excessive violence and gore in fighting games came from Mortal Kombat for sure. That's its gimmick. I often wonder how popular it would have been if it didn't have that. As for disdain, yeah I don't really feel such things add to the game. They feel tacked on just for the sake of having blood and gore.
@BiohazardEXTREME
@BiohazardEXTREME 10 жыл бұрын
Game Sack While it's true that it probably would never have become such a phenomenon if it wasn't for the excessive violence, if that's all that people get from it, then they're really missing out. Mortal Kombat has a very rich backstory, and plenty of depth to its characters, and most die hard Mortal Kombat fans are as invested in that aspect of it as they are in the violence, or the gameplay. Of course when something becomes so popular, other developers will try to rip it off, but all those countless clones don't suck BECAUSE of the violence, they suck in spite of it, and if MK never existed, they may have ripped off Street Fighter 2 instead, and they'd still suck just as much.

you talk about mortal kombat like is any other crappy one off game for the system and like its any other fighter, when in reality it is one of the most successful and well known fighters, and one of the first games to use digitized sprites. I guess to me, when you say that you didn't really think mortal kombat was anything special, its would be like saying that Super Mario Bros. wasn't anything special.
@GameSack
@GameSack 10 жыл бұрын
Actually we talked about Mortal Kombat 2. Super Mario may have done some cool things as far as selling NES's goes but that doesn't mean people are forced to like it. I'm personally sick of Super Mario 1. It's like the default game that everyone talks about when they mention videogames.

Sega 32X was a shameless cash-grab in the US/Europe, it's no wonder it still leaves Sega fans bitter to this day. As an avowed scrub ROM-stealer with no skin in the game whatsoever, I'm still struggling to find even a single game I want to download illegally. If that isn't an indictment I don't know what is.

It was SOA's idea. They designed it in 1993 because the Genesis at the time was riding high. SEGA of Japan was ready to move on from Genesis/MD altogether and had sent SOA a prototype SKU called "Sega Giga Drive" or "Sega Mars", but SOA was determined to keep the Genesis marketshare. SEGA DID have game plans. They just suffered too much from miscommunication and even worse, a Parent company determined to screw them over and kill off their entire gaming brand for selfish corporate interests.

Maybe if Sega of Japan had actually kept Sega of America in the loop and told them, "We've got something in the pipeline", things would have gone better. Of course, the Saturn was a fence-sitting, complex system which tried to grasp Japanese gamers when the real money was in the North American/European markets.

This is the best overview on the 32x I've seen. Great show! However I have to disagree with your take on Wrestlemania Arcade and Mortal Kombat II. With a Sega 6 button controller I had no problems pulling off special moves at all. Players should print a move guide for help. Both are excellent arcade ports with no loading times.
