Risk of Rain 1 was the first game I ever completed to 100%, I have more than 400 hours in it, and currently more than 500 in Risk of Rain 2, I've actually got it paused on a 92 minute run... Risk of Rain 1 did something very special to me as a gamer. It built a world that was so deep and full of meaning that I was forced to start noticing things like this, up until watching your video just now I had unanswered questions, "why did Providence have the teleporter for the ship? Why won't he just leave me alone?" and the biggest one "is this right?" which then led to me reading the logs, and I was so enthralled and taken in by the deep constructive lore of this game, and your video only accentuated that. I'm excited to see what Risk of Rain 2 will bring when its finally out of early access, I loved the video and i feel like this, as well as Hopoo games should be 100 times more popular

For me, I realized that we might actually be the villains when I saw a group of Golums listening to music and breakdancing... Which they don’t even stop doing when you come across them. And yeah, it might just come across like a silly little Easter egg... but think about it a little more. where on earth would they have gotten a boombox? The crash site. So they took the boombox, discovered how it worked (which in itself shows some level of intelligence, or at least the ability to “problem solve” plus they can dance), and retreated far away from everyone else to enjoy their discovery. I mean, there’s more there than meets the eye.
@ivanmarquez22185 жыл бұрын
I like when gamedevs are aware that you enjoy the violence that you're perpetuating and include that to play around with it, they either reinforce it or to guilt-trip you, in either case I can only see a reflection to (human) my nature when it comes to violence without real consequences. For example the iconic Hotline Miami line: "Do you like hurting other people?" always stuck to me because of that. Later on with Risk of Rain 1, after I managed to finish the game once the little messages after the survivor leaves hit me like a truck, that's when I knew I was playing a great game. To keep up with commando: -"..and so he left, with everything but his humanity." But my favorite is the sniper's: -"..and so they left, the sound still ringing in deaf ears."
@Denizu5 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a very effective way to make the game more memorable, and forges a respect for the developers as they seem to know what they are doing, at least narrative-wise.

I always thought that Providence was taking a sort of "Guardian of Eden" approach: he destroyed the ship for taking teleportation artifacts (or even merely discovering) the planet's existence, and then rallied the planet's populace to eliminate any survivors and witnesses. The Commando's raw determination to survive makes him power through to the escape pod, however, because he doesn't care about this personal paradise Providence resides over and he's not going to let him win when he, to his knowledge, destroyed everyone in the ship without trial or explanation before they even knew their crime. Classic stand-off, and one the Commando comes out on. One can only imagine the exhausted, traumatized figure of the Commando as he reflects on what he witnessed- and committed- after the shuttle crash...

Also, most of Hoopoo Games games I played have some sadness in their stories. I mean, I played RoR and Deadbolt. You explained the RoR. But in Deadbolt you have the story of a new grim reaper, at first you don't know that, but then you get to headcuarters of Izban, antagonist of the game, and you noticie the new coat of paint on his wall. Then in the final level you get confirmation- Izban was the previous Grim Reaper and from his dialogue you get to know why he left to help the rest of Undead. He regarded Flame, the one who gives you contracts in game, as a friend, but Flame didn't regard him as that back, only carring about the job. Once Izban left, Flame realized it's mistake and decides to be more caring about the new Reaper, you. Through your playthrough you see your house get furniture, new lights, you get a cat, yet your character, you, are there just for the missions, just for the work. After killing Izban, Flame gives you a reward, life in it's domain, it's friendship, but that's not what the new Reaper wants. He was, is, the inverse of Izban, he doesn't care about affection or friends, he cares about job well done, even his monoligue is short and internal. In the end, Flame changed too late and Izban died, trying to reach it and talk again, as friends. And new Reaper didn't even go out of it satisfied, stuck in the realm of Flame, not carring about the affection it gave to him

This is the thing (currently) kind of missing in RoR2. It's an amazing game, don't get me wrong, but right now it doesn't have the dubious morality of the first one, the progression of being a victim of a catastrophe, and then turning into a broken shell with no humanity -- the effects of solitude and a constant battle for survival are kind of absent. Heck, there's not even a definitive ending yet -- though, here's waiting for August 11th, for the full-release version!

Great video, but you did miss one little detail. Providence didn't attack the ship because of what it was transporting. It's implied by his log that Providence attacked because the ship stole some of the planet's teleporters. Not even just one, if you look around the final stage, you'll see at LEAST four teleporters onboard the ship. And you always spawn on top of one of them when you enter the stage.
@Denizu4 жыл бұрын
We didn't, nor do know now how UES got a hold of the teleporters. If they stole them or aquired them some other way has not been explained in any canon piece of lore. He had plenty of possible reasons to attack the UES contact light.
@graysongdl4 жыл бұрын
@@Denizu We did, though. Since the first game. From Providence's log: "I don't know his purpose, or his reasoning, but he did not give me a choice. I had to kill him.. so why do I feel like I made a terrible mistake? ... Why did we have a teleporter from this planet in our cargo hold?" It's a hint too specific to be there unintentionally. If you have a better explanation for the Contact Light having the teleporters, Providence attacking it, AND that question being at the end of his log, I'd like to hear it. Because saying that he DIDN'T attack the Contact Light because it stole teleporter(s) is challenging a long-standing theory from back when we had no idea there would be a sequel! Simpler times, amirite?
@Denizu4 жыл бұрын
@@graysongdl @Graysongdl Petriorchor V is unmarked on all star charts (game intro) and teleportation is considered a fantasy (ror1 imp log),if you are telling me that somehow the UES:Cl went down to steal a teleporter but the Ror1 survivor was completely clueless about there being a teleporter in the caego after the ship somehow must have landed on the planet to steal it, that would be bizarre. Why did Providence attack our ship? Commencement log suggests Providence had been keeping an eye on earth for a while now and worried about them. Maybe he struck down the ship in an ill attempt to get them on the planet, he is the bulwark of the weak and maybe he considered humans weak and wanted them on the planet. Maybe he saw the horrible cargo and wanted to crash it? Providence's motivation is still muddy. As for how they aquired the teleporter? A new strong fan theory is that Mithrix gave the humans a teleporter or put it in their way so they would get it and bring it back to home, in which Mithrix could use it to ship all the lunar chimera and take over earth. A theory that as of now holds equally as much merit, though I personally do not believe them. Could UES have stolen the teleporter from the planet and that is why Provi attacked? Sure, it is possible but it is not confirmed. It hangs on because of the unused ending dialogue that was cut but Hopoo said that it was not canon. UES stealing the teleporter would strip the game's lore of all moral nuance and would be a bit of a shame but as things are right now it is not confirmed, nor deconfirmed.
@pinguin48984 жыл бұрын
most of the cargo was to be a simple delivery but with the harmless mail and parcels, there were also heavily protected highly confidential files that nobody unrelated was supposed to ever see, alike the prototype AtG Missiles, the repulsive armor, the gauss cannon, I am willing to suspect that the telepporter was to be delivered for research but providence said no and they just stole it in the sequel they are instead of using mail delivery notes for the items just some random notes, which saddens me slightly but opens up a lot of doors for new kinds of storytelling don't know anything about monster logs yet, haven't read those

Ilove how interwoven the original and the sequel is in story, in the sequel there's a certain death quote that makes this all interwoven "They will surely feast on your flesh." At first if you die with this quote, you probably dont think much about it other then "lol funny ror2 git gud death quote :)" but really it means that when you killed Providence there was no more guidance for the monsters, they are relentless now, this was the huge mistake the commando made, they aren't trying to kill you because of the transported items anymore no no, they are trying to kill you for the sole reason of killing you. Without the guidance of Providence, they are nothing but relentless animals.

Hey Denizu I’m new to the channel and I really like your RoR content, but I’ve been wondering about the story specifically are we the villains of the story and could the denizens of this planet be being weaponized by Providence? Because I personally don’t think we’re “innocent” but then again I wonder if we could be seen as a type of liberator by killing him. He may see himself as a protector but if he was truly a protector then why weaponize his own people?
@Denizu4 жыл бұрын
Hello Dominick hicks, thank you for reaching out. Providence has been noted of brining this species off their doomed worlds to the RoR planet known as "Petriorchor V" to save them. Sometimes it is alluded to that the denizens of the planet almost have this bipolar nature where they suddenly start attacking when they see you. Why this is may be how the creatures might be defensive and see you as an intruder, or Providence's influence is making them attack you. It has never been truly cleared up, but with how the creatures are more hostile than ever after Providence's death, you can wonder if he was keeping them in check. The UES company is a rather shady bunch and while their involvment with the planet itself is still not clear, i would say it is pretty safe to assume from the nature of how the ror1 monster logs are written that the survivor(s) most likely were not in on whatever the UES is doing. Their suffering is therefore more unjust as they are at least "more" innocent than UES. Hopoo have hinted at a "Paladin" charachter that worships the RoR1 survivor which killed Providence. While this might be for simple "obey the strong" type principle, there might also be something in it that not all the inhabitants liked Providence as their bulwark. Providence is a complicated figure as in a way he does protect the creatures by proxy of saving them from their doomed worlds, but at the same time he allegdly (according to his spiteful brother) does not let them leave. Which we sorta see in the ror1 final boss. Providence seems to geniunly care for the inhabitants and wishes to protect them from any threat, one of them being you. I always liked to look at it as an overprotective parent. Kind intentions, but maybe a bit too worried about the ones they care about. Evident by him still making constructs meant for war when there probably was no need to. I hope this does clear some things up, cheers!

I understand that feeling given the games less gritty artstyle and more vibrant enviroment. At the same time, sky meadows, siren's call and distant roost still have that iconic RoR feel to me, and the secret tunnels in the Bazar and Wetland aspect are almost scarily atmospheric. I have faith in Hopoo games and I actually think a lot of the disconnect might come from the communities more meme-centric nature. Making it subconsciously hard to certain parts of the game seriously as a silly meme is almost always attached to it.

@@Denizu yeah true, i loved what they did with sky meadows, i do hope it lives up to RoR 1 completely. despite the lore both games are a chronic addictions of mine and definitely my favorite roguelikes

It might have looked a bit rough, but it was a gift one of my good friends made for me couple years back. It has incredible value to me and I cherish it still to this day even though I have updated my puppet, or avatar as you call it
