This video details a system of seven planets orbiting TRAPPIST-1, a discovery of the Spitzer Space Telescope, operated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. TRAPPIST-1 is an ultra-cool dwarf star. Over 21 days, Spitzer measured the drop in light as each planet passed in front of the star. Spitzer was able to identify a total of seven rocky worlds, including three in the habitable zone where life is possible. The study established the planets' size, distance from their sun and, for some of them, their approximate mass and density. It also established that some, if not all, these planets are tidally locked, meaning one face of the planet permanently faces their sun.

this is a very cool discovery even if there is no life here. that many rocky worlds is very rare.

Odin gave an eye for wisdom. I would give far more for a fucking construction plan of a spaceship that brings me there.

The one thing I'm thinking right now is "What if there's life there... what if there's already things.. _living_ there, on one or more of those planets?"

Scott Carter if they cover that up man... its just not fair for the human world.

@@scottcarter7164 Why would they cover it up? It benefits them in zero way. Your paranoid delusion doesn't work with reality. We'll never reach those planets, so there's no point in even trying to cover up what essentially boils down to a factoid.

I'm watching all these videos about the discovery, the possibility to travel there, save humanity, all that stuff, but no one asked a simple question - what if there is someone living there already and not in a mood to share their home? Not necessarily a super advanced race, its enough for them to be at our level of development. Y'all know what time it is then! War.

We are human, since when did we need an invitation to conquer? if intelligent life does exist out there and is advanced enough to defend itself, then good luck to it otherwise it is going to get colombo'ed

so the planets passed in front of the star in 21 days? that doesnt tell us much about the size of the system or the orbit period or does it?

Well. There are a billion of galaxies and there are a billion of solar systems, there are more planets than we can ever imagine. And you're still thinking that aliens and other people or whatever they are don't exist? This shit is weird damn.

What´s the point anyway ? With a dwarf star and the planets proximity, tidal locking is inevitable and completely incompatible with, for example, Earth´s rotation and all the implications that result of it. It seem´s like habitable zone has become an oversimplified concept. Right distance, liquid water, bingo. Not so fast, people. It´s not that easy... And since 80% of stars are small like that, while our sun is minoritarian, that pretty much cuts down your ¨quest for others like us¨. Don´t need Trappist to know that microbial life can be found outside our solar system. I want complex, intelligent alien life and the conditions require a bit more than liquid water. :)
